Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When snow or ice makes a trip unsafe, postpone nonessential travel. If you must go, check local weather and road alerts, prepare the car so you can see clearly, and drive slowly with smooth inputs and extra space. These steps reflect guidance from UK, US, and Canadian authorities; local laws and road conditions vary.
Before you set out: decide whether the trip is safe
Check the forecast, road closures, delays, and route advisories immediately before leaving. Consider whether the route includes exposed roads, steep grades, or areas where it would be difficult to stop safely. If conditions are worsening or authorities advise against travel, postpone the trip if you can.

The UK Highway Code says, “DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential.” That is UK guidance, not a universal legal rule. If a trip is essential, allow more time and take great care. Transport Canada advises drivers to match their plans to prevailing conditions and to stop somewhere safe if driving becomes too risky.
Clear the vehicle and check the tires
- Remove snow and ice from every window, mirror, light, and registration plate; demist the windows before moving.
- Clear snow that could blow or slide off the vehicle into the path of other road users.
- Check tire condition and pressure against the vehicle maker’s specifications. Follow local rules for tire type and minimum tread.
For cars, light vans, and light trailers in the UK, the Highway Code gives a legal minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm. That threshold is specific to UK rules and should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Choose tires for your climate and vehicle
Winter tires can be an important choice where cold, snowy, or icy conditions are common. Transport Canada recommends winter tires on all wheels. Check the vehicle manual and tire specifications for fitment, and check local requirements: what is suitable or required depends on the vehicle and jurisdiction.
Driving on snow and ice
Slow down and leave more space
Reduce speed to suit the traction and visibility you actually have. Leave substantially more room than usual because stopping takes longer on snow and ice. The UK Highway Code says stopping distances in icy or snowy conditions can be ten times greater than on dry roads; that comparison is UK guidance, not a guaranteed distance for every vehicle, speed, tire, or surface.

- Worry-free self-tightening ratchets provide automatic tightening and centering
- Easy installation and removal in minutes
- Do not exceed 30 MPH with these chains on
- Diamond pattern cross chain provides a smoother ride and superior traction
- Note-Chains should be fitted to tire before actual use. Fitment can be affected by age of tire, tire manufacturer and/or tread type
For high-speed roads, the UK Highway Code says to double the usual two-second gap on wet roads and notes that the gap can be up to ten times greater on icy roads. Treat this as UK guidance for that context, not a universal formula. On any road, increase your following distance enough to give yourself time to respond and stop smoothly.

Make every control input gentle
- Accelerate and brake gently, and steer smoothly. Avoid abrupt movements that can reduce your control.
- Brake progressively before a bend, while still on the straight, and leave extra room before turning.
- Change lanes cautiously. Avoid overtaking when snow, slush, or poor visibility makes the maneuver risky.
- Watch for snowplows and give them plenty of room.
Ice can be difficult to see even when visibility is good. Do not test the road surface while driving; if you need to assess conditions, pull over somewhere safe. Snow and ice can also affect driver-assistance technologies. Consult your owner’s manual and do not assume those systems will behave normally in winter conditions.

What to keep in a winter emergency kit
Choose supplies for the forecast, route, trip length, remoteness, and available storage. Official agency lists vary; no single list is a complete kit for every driver.
- Visibility and access: ice scraper, shovel, and flashlight.
- Warmth and health: warm clothing or blankets and a first-aid kit.
- Communication and power: phone and charger.
- Food and water: enough for a delay suited to the trip.
- Recovery: jumper cables and traction material such as sand or kitty litter.
If you become stranded
- Stay with the vehicle when it is safe to do so. Avoid overexertion while trying to dig or push the car out.
- Make the vehicle visible. Use bright markers or an interior light so rescuers and other road users can see it.
- Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow. A blocked exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to build up in the vehicle.
- Use the engine sparingly for warmth. Run it only occasionally and briefly. Never run the vehicle for long periods with the windows up or in an enclosed space because carbon monoxide can be deadly.
Why preparation matters
In the United States, NHTSA recorded 320 fatal traffic crashes and estimated 22,293 injury crashes in 2023 when snow or sleet conditions were present. These figures describe crashes associated with those conditions; they do not mean snow or sleet alone caused every crash.
