Debian .deb packages do not install directly into Windows. In an administrator PowerShell window, use wsl --install -d Debian to select Debian rather than the Ubuntu distribution installed by the plain wsl --install command.
What “Debian package for Windows 11” means
WSL lets Windows host a Linux distribution such as Debian. It gives you a Debian command line and package manager without replacing Windows, but it does not make Debian’s .deb files native Windows installers. Install and manage those packages from within the Debian environment.

There is also a Debian package named wsl, but it is “Wsman Shell Command Line ‘whistle’”—not Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux. If your goal is a Debian environment on Windows, install the Debian WSL distribution instead. Microsoft’s WSL installation guide and Debian’s WSL guide describe that setup.
Install Debian on Windows 11
Microsoft’s one-command installation instructions apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later. The Debian-specific route below uses Microsoft’s current install command; Debian’s more detailed WSL 2 guidance assumes Windows 11 and calls for hardware virtualization to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open PowerShell as an administrator. Search for PowerShell, open its context menu, and choose Run as administrator.
- Check the available distribution name if needed. Run
wsl --list --online. The Debian distribution is listed asDebian. - Install Debian. Run
wsl --install -d Debian. The plainwsl --installcommand installs Ubuntu by default, so include-d Debianto choose Debian. - Restart Windows if prompted. A restart is part of Microsoft’s one-command installation instructions.
- Launch Debian and create its Linux account. The first launch may take a few minutes while the distribution’s files decompress. Enter a Linux username and password when prompted. Password characters may not appear as you type; that is normal for a terminal password prompt.
For a more manual WSL 2 setup, Debian’s guide describes enabling the Windows Subsystem for Linux and Virtual Machine Platform Windows features, restarting, updating WSL, setting WSL 2 as the default if needed, and then installing Debian. See Debian’s WSL instructions for Debian-specific setup details; Microsoft’s install guide is the better authority for the current one-command route.
Install and update Debian packages with APT
Open the Debian distribution—not an ordinary PowerShell prompt—to run Linux package commands. APT updates and installs software inside Debian; Windows does not automatically update that software for you.
- Refresh the package index:
sudo apt update - Upgrade installed packages:
sudo apt upgrade. Debian’s WSL guide also illustratessudo apt dist-upgradefor distribution upgrades. - Install a package:
sudo apt install package-name, replacingpackage-namewith the Debian package you want.
For example, the general form is sudo apt install git. APT may ask for the Linux account password you created during first launch. Microsoft’s WSL environment setup guide recommends updating Debian or Ubuntu with sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade, and notes that Windows does not update WSL distributions automatically.

Choose WSL 2, and know when it is not enough
WSL 2 with Debian is a fit when you want Linux command-line tools integrated with Windows and do not need to replace the host operating system. Debian’s guide documents a Debian environment under WSL, including GUI integration, but cautions that software requiring certain services or low-level hardware access may not work as it would on a physical Debian installation.
| Option | When it fits | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Debian on WSL 2 | You want Debian tools alongside Windows and convenient access to Windows applications and files. | Requires WSL setup; the Debian WSL 2 route assumes firmware virtualization. Systemd and GUI apps have setup requirements, and some hardware-dependent software may fail. |
| Native/dual-boot Debian or a traditional virtual machine | You need a standalone Debian installation or a workload that depends on hardware or services WSL does not support. | These are alternatives to WSL, not steps in this Windows-integrated setup. The cited guides do not provide a full comparison of their trade-offs. |
Do not assume WSL exactly reproduces bare-metal Debian behavior. If your software needs direct low-level hardware access or services unsupported by the Windows kernel or virtualization interface, consider a native installation or a traditional virtual machine instead.
Optional setup: enable systemd in Debian
WSL supports systemd, but Debian may need explicit configuration. Microsoft’s documented steps require WSL version 0.67.6 or newer; for Debian, Microsoft specifically calls for both the systemd and systemd-sysv packages.

- Update Debian and install the required packages: run
sudo apt update, thensudo apt install systemd systemd-sysv. - Edit the WSL configuration: open
/etc/wsl.confwith a text editor running with administrator privileges, such assudo nano /etc/wsl.conf. Add these lines, preserving any existing settings:[boot]
systemd=true - Restart the WSL environment: exit Debian, then in PowerShell run
wsl --shutdown. Launch Debian again. - Verify systemd: in Debian, run
systemctland check that it returns service-manager output rather than an error.
Follow Microsoft’s current systemd configuration instructions if a command behaves differently or you need details for your WSL version. Do not append configuration using a command that applies sudo only to echo; shell redirection is handled by the current shell and may fail to write a protected file.

Debian’s documented WSL GUI path requires WSL 2 and recommends Debian Bookworm or later; the guide also lists mesa-utils as a Debian-side requirement. Install the package in Debian with sudo apt install mesa-utils if you are following that documented path. Installed apps can be launched from the Debian shell or the Windows Start menu, but integration support does not guarantee that every Linux GUI application will work.
Consult Debian’s WSL guide for its GUI-specific instructions and requirements.

Use Windows Terminal and keep project files in the right filesystem
Windows Terminal is useful when you work across several command lines; installing a WSL distribution creates a terminal profile for it. For projects built with Linux command-line tools, Microsoft recommends keeping files in the WSL Linux filesystem for best speed. Windows and Linux can access each other’s files, but working across the two filesystems may be significantly slower.
To open the current WSL directory in Windows File Explorer, run explorer.exe . from the Debian shell. Each WSL distribution has its own Linux accounts and passwords, and a distribution installation belongs to the Windows user account that installed it; it is not automatically shared with other Windows accounts. See Microsoft’s environment setup guidance for terminal, file, and account details.

If by “Debian package” you mean software published by Microsoft for Debian, that is a separate case from installing a package from Debian’s repositories. Microsoft’s instructions use a repository configuration package selected for the Debian release and version. It adds the repository information and public key used to validate signed packages; after configuring it, you refresh APT and install the desired software.
Use Microsoft’s current Linux Software Repository instructions to choose the correct configuration package for your Debian release. Avoid copying a repository path or setup command intended for a different release.
