Set Orientation to Landscape, choose Selected text under Apply to, and click OK. Word uses section breaks to apply orientation to only part of a document.
Make one existing page landscape with Selected text
- Select the text on the page you want to rotate. Microsoft’s instructions recommend selecting all the text on the pages whose orientation you want to change.
- Choose Format > Document > Page Setup.
- Under Orientation, choose Landscape.
- Under Apply to, choose Selected text, then click OK.
- Check the document afterward. Word may repaginate content when the layout changes, so verify which page is landscape rather than assuming the original page number stayed the same.

Use section breaks for direct control
Choose this method if you want to define the landscape section’s boundaries yourself, or if the document already contains sections. A section break isolates section-level layout settings; a page break alone does not.

- Place the insertion point before the content that should begin the landscape page.
- Choose Layout > Breaks > Next Page to start a new section on the following page.
- At the end of the landscape page, insert another Next Page section break. This puts the following content in a separate section.
- Open Page Setup for the target section, choose Landscape, and set Apply to to This section.
- Turn on Home > Show/Hide (¶) if you need to see the section boundaries.
Microsoft describes a Continuous section break as starting a section on the same page, particularly useful for changing columns without starting a new page. For a full landscape page, Next Page breaks provide the straightforward boundaries. See Microsoft’s section-break instructions and how to show section breaks.

Choose the workflow that fits your document

Fix common problems
The whole document changed to landscape
Undo the change, then retry with Apply to > Selected text, or locate the intended section boundaries and apply Landscape to This section. If you are unsure where sections begin and end, turn on Home > Show/Hide (¶).
A page break did not keep the change to one page
A page break starts content on another page but does not create a separate formatting section. Use section breaks around the landscape page instead.

You cannot find the section breaks
Choose Home > Show/Hide (¶) to display formatting marks and inspect where each section starts and ends.

Headers or footers changed unexpectedly
Headers and footers can also vary by section. Inspect whether the relevant sections are linked; Microsoft’s instructions for changing a header or footer on one page explain the section-break relationship.

Can you do this in Word for the web?
The steps above are for desktop Word. Microsoft says Word for the web cannot add section breaks, so use the desktop app for this workflow. Microsoft lists Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac, Word 2024 for Mac, and Word 2021 for Mac among the desktop versions covered by its Mac instructions. Menu wording may change in later updates; older releases are not covered by those instructions.
