How to install Android APK files on Steam Frame with SteamOS

Steam Frame can run Android APK files through Valve’s Lepton container. The supported ways to put an APK on the headset are the SteamOS Devkit Client, which uploads a local build and creates a Devkit library entry, and Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which connects directly to Lepton over Wi-Fi or USB. There is no Valve-documented, universal one-click consumer APK installer, so choose the workflow that matches whether you want a repeatable Steam library shortcut or direct Android deployment and debugging.

What runs an APK on Steam Frame

Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset running SteamOS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 ARM64 platform. Valve describes several execution models in its Steam Frame compatibility documentation: native ARM64 software, Android-based APKs, Windows games through Proton, and x86 software translated with FEX. Android applications do not run as ordinary Linux programs. They run inside Lepton, Valve’s Android container for Linux devices such as Steam Frame.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction explains why an APK can be present on the headset yet fail to launch. The package must be suitable for the ARM64 hardware and for the Android environment exposed by Lepton. CPU architecture, graphics APIs, controller or touch input, screen orientation, required Android services, permissions and the app’s assumptions about a phone or tablet can all affect compatibility. An APK extension by itself is not a guarantee that the app will work in VR.

Valve’s documentation covers two practical installation paths:

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  • SteamOS Devkit Client: upload a local folder, identify the APK as the start command, select the Android runtime and launch it from a Devkit entry in the Steam library.
  • ADB to Lepton: connect an ADB-capable computer to the running Lepton container over the local network or through a USB TCP-forwarding setup, then deploy with Android tooling.

The Devkit route is generally easier when you want a repeatable launch shortcut. ADB is more appropriate for Android developers, iterative testing and commands that need a direct device connection.

Before you begin

Required hardware and software

  • A Steam Frame headset with SteamOS installed and enough free storage for the APK and any accompanying data.
  • A computer on which Steam is installed for the SteamOS Devkit Client, or a computer with Google’s Android Debug Bridge. ADB is available as a standalone download from Google and is also included with Android Studio.
  • The APK file you intend to test. Use a build you are legally allowed to install and trust; sideloading does not bypass an app’s licensing or service requirements.
  • For Wi-Fi ADB, the computer and headset should be on the same network. Router client isolation can prevent them from seeing one another.
  • For USB ADB, a data-capable USB cable and, if necessary, a powered USB-C adapter or hub. Valve warns that a computer may not provide enough power over USB to keep the headset running during a connection.

Enable Developer Mode

Both documented workflows require Developer Mode. On the headset, open Settings > System > Developer Mode and enable it. You may need to restart or confirm a prompt before developer features become available.

Keep the headset updated before diagnosing an installation problem. In the VR Dashboard, open Steam Settings > System > Updates and apply any available SteamOS update. Valve’s current troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends updating Steam Frame before investigating compatibility or connection failures.

Method 1: Upload an APK with the SteamOS Devkit Client

The Devkit Client is Valve’s official upload workflow. It is designed around a local build folder and gives the uploaded title a Steam library entry under the non-Steam Devkit section. It is the clearest option when you will launch the same APK repeatedly or want a simple, named test entry instead of issuing ADB commands each time.

1. Pair the headset with your development computer

  1. On Steam Frame, open Settings > Developer > Pair new host.
  2. On the computer, launch the SteamOS Devkit Client from Steam.
  3. Open Devkits, register the Frame and follow the pairing prompt shown on both devices.
  4. Confirm the pairing request on the headset. If more than one Frame is visible, verify that you selected the intended device before continuing.

The headset must be reachable from the computer during registration. If the client cannot find it, confirm that Developer Mode is still enabled and that the two devices can communicate on the same network.

2. Open the title-upload workflow

  1. In the Devkit Client, select the paired Frame.
  2. Choose Connect to devkit by IP when prompted for the connection method.
  3. Select Title Upload.
  4. Enter a descriptive value in Name, then choose the Local Folder containing the APK and any files the title needs.

The folder is the upload unit. Keep the APK and related files in a predictable layout so that the start command and any later updates continue to point at the correct file.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Set the APK start command and runtime

  1. In Start Command, enter the APK filename, including the .apk extension. For example, if the file is named sample-game.apk, enter sample-game.apk.
  2. Set Runtime to Android. Do not leave the runtime on a Linux or Windows setting for an APK.
  3. Review the name, folder, filename and runtime before uploading.

The filename in Start Command must match the file that is actually at the top level of the selected local folder. A mismatch is a common reason for an upload that completes but does not launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Upload and launch

  1. Click Upload and wait for the transfer to finish.
  2. Click Start in the Devkit Client.
  3. On the headset, open Library > Non-Steam > Devkit Game: (Your Game Title).

Valve documents that naming pattern for the resulting library entry. You can use that entry to launch the uploaded APK again while the devkit configuration remains available. If you replace the APK with a newer build, upload the updated folder and start the title again rather than creating a second entry unnecessarily.

When the Devkit method is the better choice

  • You want a visible Steam library shortcut for a local Android build.
  • You are testing a repeatable build-and-launch process rather than individual ADB commands.
  • You prefer pairing and upload controls in a graphical client.
  • You need to hand a test build to another person who can launch it from the Devkit library entry after setup.

Method 2: Connect ADB directly to Lepton

ADB is Google’s Android Debug Bridge. Valve’s Lepton instructions require a running Android container before the connection can succeed. Start the Lepton Development title on Steam Frame, or launch an Android game; either action creates a Lepton container. Developer Mode must remain enabled.

After ADB is connected, use normal Android tooling to inspect the device, install an APK, replace it with a newer build and collect diagnostic output. A typical installation command is adb install path/to/your-app.apk; use the exact path and filename for your build. If the package is already installed, Android tooling may require an update or replacement option appropriate to that package’s signing key.

Wi-Fi ADB

  1. Start Lepton Development or an Android game on Steam Frame so the container exists.
  2. Make sure the computer and headset are connected to the same local network.
  3. Open a terminal or command prompt in the directory containing adb, or ensure that directory is on your system PATH.
  4. Run:
adb connect frame

Here, frame is the headset hostname used in Valve’s example. If the hostname was changed, substitute the new hostname. A successful connection is reported as a device connection, such as connected to frame:5555.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the hostname cannot be resolved, find the headset’s IP address in Quick Settings or under Steam Settings > Internet, then connect with that address:

adb connect 192.168.x.x

Replace the example address with the actual address shown by Steam Frame. An IP address can change when the headset reconnects to the network, so use the current value whenever a previously working command stops finding the device.

USB ADB with TCP forwarding

A USB cable initially connects ADB to Steam Frame’s native Linux operating system, while Lepton listens on TCP port 5555. Forward the port through the USB connection, then point ADB at the forwarded local endpoint.

  1. Start Lepton Development or an Android game on the headset.
  2. Connect the headset to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
  3. From the directory containing adb, run:
adb forward tcp:5555 tcp:5555adb connect localhost:5555

A successful USB-forwarded connection is reported as connected to localhost:5555. You can then run Android deployment commands against that endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch the headset’s power state during USB use. Valve warns that a PC may not supply enough power to keep Steam Frame running. If the headset disconnects, reboots or powers down, use a USB-C cable or adapter that accepts a separate power source, such as a powered hub or pass-through adapter. Wi-Fi ADB avoids that USB power issue.

Verify the ADB session before installing

Run:

adb devices

The connected Frame should appear in the device list. If it does not, the connection was not established even if the previous command returned without an obvious error. Once the device is listed, install the APK from its actual location:

adb install /path/to/your-app.apk

After installation, launch it through the Lepton development environment or the relevant Android launcher entry. Keep the terminal output: package-manager errors, missing libraries and permission failures are more informative than a generic launch failure in the headset interface.

When ADB is the better choice

  • You are iterating rapidly on an Android build and want a direct install command.
  • You need device discovery, package replacement or debugging output.
  • You are comfortable with a terminal and do not need a Steam library shortcut.
  • You want to choose Wi-Fi for convenience or USB for a direct connection when network discovery is unreliable.

Devkit Client or ADB: which workflow fits?

Consideration SteamOS Devkit Client ADB to Lepton
Best use Repeatable build upload and a Steam library entry Direct Android deployment, iteration and debugging
Connection Pair the Frame, then connect through the Devkit Client by IP Wi-Fi hostname/IP or USB TCP forwarding
APK launch setup APK filename as Start Command; Runtime set to Android Connect ADB, then use Android deployment commands
Computer requirement SteamOS Devkit Client running through Steam ADB-capable computer; USB may need separate power
Result on Frame Library > Non-Steam > Devkit Game: (Your Game Title) A connected Android device/container for deployment
Most common setup mistake Wrong runtime or a start command that does not match the APK filename Lepton is not running, hostname cannot resolve, or USB power is insufficient

Packaging an APK for Steam distribution

Uploading a local APK to a devkit is different from shipping an Android build as a Steam application. If you are preparing a Steam app for distribution, Valve’s Steamworks instructions require an Android-specific depot and launch configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the supported operating system

In Steamworks, open Application > General > Supported Operating Systems and check Android. This identifies Android as a supported platform for the application.

Create an Android depot

Under SteamPipe > Depots, configure an Android depot. Valve states that the presence of an Android depot is what enables installation and launch of APKs through Lepton. Without that depot, a correctly built APK is not enough to produce the intended Steam installation path.

Place the APK and optional expansion data

Put the executable APK at the top level of the Android depot. If the app uses OBB expansion files, place them in an obb directory beside the APK. Keep the depot layout exactly aligned with the launch configuration so Steam can locate the package and its expansion data.

Add an Android launch option

Create a launch option with the APK selected as Executable and set Operating System to Android. The executable field should refer to the APK in the depot, not to a desktop launcher or a Linux shell script.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure Android save-data synchronization when needed

If Android save data needs Steam Cloud synchronization, configure Steam Cloud with AndroidExternalData. This is a distribution setting for Android data; it is separate from simply installing an APK on a development headset.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Compatibility limits you should expect

Lepton provides the Android execution environment, but it does not make every Android application compatible. Steam Frame’s ARM64 platform favors APKs that include the appropriate ARM64 native libraries. An APK that contains only an incompatible native architecture may fail before its user interface appears.

Graphics and input are equally important. A mobile app may depend on touchscreen gestures, phone sensors, portrait orientation, Google-specific services, a particular GPU extension or background behavior that is not available in the headset’s container. A game can install successfully yet show a black screen, ignore controller input, crash during startup or fail when it reaches an online-service check.

Test the exact build you plan to use. If the developer publishes separate APK variants, select the ARM64-compatible package rather than assuming that a universal package will behave identically. An APK that installs through ADB still needs application-level testing for rendering, controls, audio, networking, account sign-in and save handling.

Troubleshooting checklist

The Devkit Client cannot find or pair with Frame

  • Recheck Settings > System > Developer Mode on the headset.
  • Open Settings > Developer > Pair new host again and accept the pairing prompt on the correct headset.
  • Confirm the computer and Frame can communicate on the same network.
  • If several headsets use the hostname frame, rename one or select the intended device by its IP address.
  • Restart the Devkit Client after applying a SteamOS update or changing network connections.

The upload finishes but the title will not launch

  • Verify that the APK is in the selected Local Folder and that the Start Command exactly matches its filename, including capitalization and .apk.
  • Set Runtime to Android; an APK configured as a Linux or Windows title will not use Lepton correctly.
  • Upload again after replacing the build, rather than pointing the entry at a file that is no longer present.
  • Check the APK’s architecture, graphics requirements and Android-service dependencies. Successful transfer proves only that the file was uploaded.

adb connect frame cannot resolve the host

  • Use the current IP address shown in Quick Settings or Steam Settings > Internet.
  • Make sure both devices are on the same network and that the router does not enable client isolation.
  • Confirm that Lepton Development or an Android game is running; ADB needs a Lepton container to connect to.
  • If multiple Frames share the hostname frame, rename one or always connect by IP.

USB ADB disconnects or the headset powers down

  • Use a known data-capable cable rather than a charge-only cable.
  • Provide separate power through a powered USB-C hub or pass-through adapter, following Valve’s warning that a PC may not supply enough power.
  • Retry the forwarding sequence after the headset is stable:
adb forward tcp:5555 tcp:5555adb connect localhost:5555

The APK installs but behaves incorrectly

  • Confirm the build includes the correct ARM64 native code for Steam Frame.
  • Test controller mapping, pointer or touch assumptions, orientation and graphics output separately.
  • Check whether the app requires Android services or sensors that Lepton does not provide.
  • Use ADB output and the app’s own logs to identify package, permission or native-library errors instead of treating the failure as a Steam library problem.
  • Update SteamOS from Steam Settings > System > Updates before retesting, because the headset software version can affect compatibility.

Security and maintenance practices

Install APKs only from a source you trust and keep a copy of the exact file used for testing. Sideloaded packages do not receive the same review or update path as software delivered through a managed store. Remove experimental packages you no longer need, especially when testing builds that request broad permissions.

For repeatable development, keep the APK filename stable in the Devkit folder or record the filename used in the Start Command. For ADB work, save the connection method that succeeded—hostname, current IP or USB forwarding—alongside the build notes. Recheck the IP after network changes and repeat the Lepton startup step before each new ADB session.

Bottom line

Steam Frame runs Android APKs inside Valve’s Lepton container. Use the SteamOS Devkit Client when you want an official upload process and a Non-Steam > Devkit Game library entry: pair the headset, choose Title Upload, set the APK filename as Start Command and select Android as Runtime. Use ADB when you need direct Android deployment or debugging: start Lepton Development, connect with adb connect frame over Wi-Fi, or forward USB TCP port 5555 and connect to localhost:5555. For a distributed Steam app, configure an Android depot, put the APK at its top level and add an Android launch option. In every case, installation is only the first test; ARM64, graphics, input and Android-service compatibility determine whether the APK is actually usable.
