The key safety rule is to verify both panel paths before copying, moving, renaming, or deleting anything. The selected panel is the active side; common file operations use the other, unselected panel as their destination.

What Midnight Commander does on a server
GNU Midnight Commander (usually abbreviated to mc) is a free, text-mode file manager for regular consoles, terminal emulators, and remote SSH sessions. Its main screen has two directory panels, so you can inspect one location while working in another without opening a graphical desktop.
It can copy, move, rename, and delete individual files or complete directory trees; search for files; create directories; run commands in a shell; and open files in an internal viewer or editor. It also includes a diff viewer, archive and other virtual file systems, background operations, filename completion, and external panelization. These features are useful on headless servers because they operate inside the terminal session rather than requiring a desktop file manager.

mc is interactive and full-screen. It is therefore appropriate for an administrator working at a terminal, not for a script that expects ordinary, line-oriented standard output.
Requirements and safe preparation
- An account that can log in to the server and use its package manager.
- SSH access if the server is remote.
- Permission to read the directories you need to inspect and write the locations you need to change.
- A terminal emulator that passes cursor, function-key, Tab, and Ctrl-key input correctly.
Use the least-privileged account that can complete the job. Run sudo only for the installation or for a specific filesystem operation that actually needs elevated rights. Midnight Commander does not bypass Unix permissions: commands launched from its shell, and file operations performed by its panels, run with the permissions and environment of your SSH account.
Install Midnight Commander from the distribution repository
Debian or Ubuntu
Refresh the package index and install the distribution’s mc package:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mcThe package manager resolves the correct build and its dependencies for the server’s architecture and release. You do not need to download an unrelated binary.
Fedora and other DNF-based systems
Install the package with DNF:
sudo dnf install mcOn a Red Hat-family server, the enabled repositories and operating-system policy determine whether the package is available. If DNF reports that no package can be found, check that the appropriate distribution repositories are enabled rather than installing an untrusted binary.
Confirm the installation
Ask the installed program to print its version:
mc --versionThe manual also documents the short form -V. A version string confirms that the command is in your PATH and shows which build you are running. If the shell says “command not found,” check the package transaction, the account’s PATH, and whether you installed the package in a different environment than the one used for SSH.

Start mc locally or through SSH
Open an SSH session first
Connect normally, then start the program from the remote shell:
ssh [email protected]
mcMidnight Commander takes over the terminal while it is running. Exit it through the program’s quit command or the visible function-key/menu option to return to the shell.
Choose the initial directories
You can pass zero, one, or two directory paths when launching mc:

Supplying both paths is useful for repeatable administration because it removes uncertainty about where a copy or move will go. Quote paths containing spaces or shell metacharacters as you would for any command.

Understand the two-panel interface
The two directory panels occupy most of the screen. Each displays a path and a listing of files and directories. The panel containing the selection bar is the current, or active, panel. The other panel is unselected. Near the bottom is a command line for shell commands, and the bottom key bar shows the available function-key actions. If the menu bar is hidden, press F9 to reveal it.
Switch and inspect panels
Press Tab to move the selection bar between panels. Before any bulk or destructive operation, press Tab and read the path shown at the top of each panel. The active panel supplies the selected files; the other panel is commonly treated as the destination for copy and rename operations.

Get help without leaving the session
Press F1 for context-sensitive help. F2 opens the configurable user menu, where you can define frequently used commands. If a function key does not work, rely on the labels rendered by your terminal and the menu rather than assuming the keystroke reached mc.
Navigate, select, and work with files
Navigate directories
- Use the arrow keys to move the selection bar through the listing.
- Open a highlighted directory using the panel’s normal enter action.
- Use the parent-directory entry to move upward.
- Press Tab when you need to inspect or use the other panel.
Panel key bindings vary with terminal and configuration, so the on-screen key bar and F1 help are the authoritative guide for the current session.

Use the panel’s selection controls to mark files or directories. A marked set is the input to a subsequent copy, move, or delete operation. Check the selection before invoking an operation, especially when a directory tree is involved.
Copy files or trees
- Navigate the active panel to the source directory.
- Mark the files or directories to copy.
- Press the copy function shown in the key bar.
- Verify that the other panel displays the intended destination path.
- Review the confirmation dialog, including overwrite choices, and approve only the files you intend to change.
Copying a directory can affect every item beneath it. For large transfers, use a small, reversible test first and observe the result before starting the full set.
Move or rename
Move and rename commonly use the unselected panel as the destination. To move an item between directories, place the source in the active panel, switch the other panel to the target directory, mark the item, and invoke the move or rename action. Confirm the destination and any overwrite prompt. A rename within one directory is still a filesystem change, so inspect the resulting name before continuing.
Delete
Mark the intended files or directories and invoke the delete action shown in the key bar. Read the confirmation carefully. Deleting a directory tree can remove many files at once, and recovery is not guaranteed on a server. If you are uncertain, cancel and use the internal viewer or a shell listing to inspect the selection first.

View, edit, search, and compare content
Inspect with the internal viewer
Use the viewer action shown by the function-key bar to read a file without launching an external graphical application. This is useful for logs, configuration files, and scripts when you need to inspect content before copying or editing it.
Edit carefully
The internal editor lets you change a file from the same terminal interface. Confirm the path, ownership, and permissions before saving. For production configuration, preserve a backup or use your normal change-control process; an editor does not provide a rollback merely because it was opened from mc.
Search and compare
Midnight Commander includes file search and a diff viewer. Search helps locate files by name or other available criteria, while the diff viewer can compare two files or panel selections. Use these tools to verify that a transfer or configuration change produced the expected content before closing the session.

The command line near the bottom of the screen accepts ordinary shell commands. Those commands execute as the logged-in account, with that account’s environment and permissions. This makes the command line convenient for checks such as pwd, id, or a targeted listing, but it also means a destructive command has the same consequences it would have outside mc.
Ctrl-O and the subshell view
On builds with concurrent shell support, Ctrl-O toggles between the panel interface and a subshell view. This lets you run shell commands while retaining the panel state. The manual provides -u or --nosubshell to disable concurrent shell support and -U or --subshell to enable it when the build supports it.
Only Bash, tcsh, and zsh are supported as subshells according to the project FAQ. A login shell outside that set, a build without subshell support, or terminal software that consumes Ctrl-O can make the shortcut appear to do nothing.
Troubleshoot a non-working Ctrl-O
- Check the login shell with
getent passwd "$USER"or your system’s account-management tool, and confirm that it is Bash, tcsh, or zsh. - Try launching with
mc -Uif the installed build supports subshell mode. - Check the terminal emulator, SSH client, and any multiplexer for a Ctrl-O binding that intercepts the key.
- Use F1 and the visible key bar to confirm the build’s available controls. Some terminal programs also intercept function keys; try the alternate Esc-digit sequence shown by your environment or a different terminal configuration.
- If you need a predictable session without a subshell, start with
mc -u.
Disabling the subshell does not disable panel file operations; it only removes concurrent shell support.
Archives, remote locations, and background work
The project’s documentation describes virtual file systems for archives and remote machines. These let you browse supported packaged or remote content through a panel-like interface instead of manually unpacking or changing directories first. Treat a remote or archive panel as a real data source: verify what it represents and test a small operation before a bulk transfer.

Background operations can keep a lengthy copy or move running while you continue using the interface. Monitor the operation and confirm its final result; background execution is not a substitute for checking free space, permissions, network stability, or the destination path.
External panelization can populate a panel from command output or another selection mechanism. Because the resulting list may not be a normal directory view, read the panel path and selection carefully before applying a destructive action.
Server-safe operating checklist
- Log in with the least-privileged account that can do the work.
- Use
sudofor a narrowly scoped command, not as a default way to run the entire session. - Before copying or moving, verify the active source panel and the other panel’s destination path.
- Before deleting, inspect marked items and read every confirmation dialog.
- For bulk, remote, or archive operations, test one small and reversible transfer first.
- Check ownership, permissions, available space, and expected filenames before editing or replacing server files.
- Do not place
mcin automation that expects plain stdout; it is an interactive full-screen application. - Remember that shell commands from the command line or subshell inherit the SSH account’s permissions and environment.
A practical SSH workflow
Compare a log directory with a temporary workspace
- Connect to the host:
ssh [email protected]. - Start with predictable panels:
mc /var/log /tmp. - Use the active panel to inspect the log names and press Tab to confirm the temporary destination.
- Open a log in the internal viewer before copying it.
- Mark only the required files, invoke copy, and approve the destination after checking the prompt.
- Use the command line for a targeted verification, such as checking the destination listing, then return to the panels.
This workflow keeps the source and destination visible and avoids relying on whichever directories happen to be saved from an earlier session.
When Midnight Commander is the right tool
mc is a strong fit when you need a visual, keyboard-driven view over SSH, frequent two-directory transfers, built-in viewing or editing, or occasional archive and remote browsing. It is less suitable for unattended jobs, repeatable deployments, or situations where a plain command pipeline and explicit logging are required. For those tasks, use the appropriate shell or automation tool and reserve mc for interactive inspection and controlled changes.
