How to Run a Multi-Node Cassandra Database Cluster on Ubuntu

A practical Cassandra 5.0 Ubuntu guide covering three-node planning, package installation, seeds, routable listen addresses, topology, firewall rules, security, nodetool validation, backups, repair, and safe scaling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run Cassandra as a real multi-node cluster on Ubuntu, you must configure more than several Cassandra processes. Each node needs a reachable private address, a consistent cluster name and topology, deliberate seed settings, an appropriate snitch, and firewall rules that permit internode traffic without exposing the database to untrusted networks. This guide follows the Apache Cassandra 5.0 documentation set current in 2026 and covers a three-node starting layout, while explaining which values must change for larger or multi-datacenter deployments.

Plan the cluster before installing Cassandra

Cassandra is a distributed database. The first decisions—failure domains, addresses, versions, and deployment method—determine whether replicas are placed safely and whether a node can rejoin after a failure.

Use at least three deliberately placed nodes

Prepare at least three Ubuntu nodes for a meaningful production-style cluster. Give every node a stable, mutually resolvable private address. DNS names are useful, but Cassandra ultimately needs addresses that are routable from every other node. Do not build the cluster around changing public addresses or temporary cloud addresses.

  • Install the same Cassandra major and minor version on every node.
  • Synchronize system clocks on all nodes; inconsistent time complicates logs, certificates, and operations.
  • Provide enough disk for the data set, compaction headroom, snapshots, and temporary streaming when nodes are added or replaced.
  • Choose datacenter and rack labels before writing production data. The labels represent failure domains, not merely geographic names.
  • Document each node’s hostname, private address, datacenter, rack, seed status, and intended client networks.

A three-node, single-datacenter arrangement is a useful learning and small-workload topology, not a universal capacity or availability recommendation. A larger deployment may spread nodes across racks or datacenters so that a rack, host, zone, or site failure does not remove every replica.

Choose a deployment method consciously

Method Lifecycle management Filesystem and service ownership Upgrade and rollback Observability and operations
Ubuntu/Debian APT package Uses the operating system package workflow and normal service management. Configuration is normally under /etc/cassandra; package-managed files and service supervision are explicit. Package upgrades are straightforward, but test version changes and keep a rollback plan for data and configuration. Fits host-level logging, monitoring, backups, and standard Linux administration.
Tarball You own installation, service definitions, upgrades, and directory layout. You choose data, commit-log, log, and configuration paths. Can make side-by-side testing easier, but requires disciplined version and service management. Monitoring and log rotation must be integrated by the operator.
Docker Container images and orchestration manage process lifecycle. Persistent volumes, network identity, and permissions must be designed explicitly. Image changes and rollback depend on the container platform and persistent-volume procedures. Container logs and host metrics need to be combined with Cassandra metrics.

The package workflow below is intended for Ubuntu and other Debian-based systems. A tarball or container can work, but the commands and paths will differ.

Install prerequisites on every node

Install and verify Java

Apache Cassandra 5.0 documentation requires Java 11 or Java 17. Install one supported version before installing Cassandra, then verify the runtime rather than assuming the package manager selected the intended one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
java -version

The output should identify Java 11 or Java 17. If several Java versions are installed, select the supported runtime with Ubuntu’s alternatives mechanism and run the check again. Repeat this verification on every node.

Install Python only if you will use cqlsh

The Cassandra 5.0 documentation supports Python 3.8 through 3.13 for cqlsh. This requirement concerns the command-line shell; it is separate from the Java runtime used by Cassandra. Verify the Python version in the environment from which you will run cqlsh.

python3 --version

Install Cassandra from the Debian package

Add the Apache repository and signing key

On each node, add the Apache Cassandra Debian repository and its signing key using the current instructions for Cassandra 5.0. Repository paths and key details can change, so use the version-matched instructions from the Apache project rather than copying an old distribution entry. After the repository is configured, refresh package metadata and install the package:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cassandra

The package workflow places the primary configuration under /etc/cassandra. Before making cluster changes, locate the service’s logs and confirm which configuration directory the installed package is using. During startup, inspect system.log for address, gossip, storage, and schema errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop Cassandra before editing cluster settings

Do not edit a live node’s identity and topology settings casually. Stop the service before changing the cluster configuration, and make a dated copy of the configuration files so you can identify exactly what changed.

sudo systemctl stop cassandra
sudo cp -a /etc/cassandra /etc/cassandra.backup-before-cluster-config

Use the service name supplied by the package if it differs on your installation. Keep the first node stopped until its configuration is complete.

Configure identity, addresses, and topology

Set the shared cluster name

In /etc/cassandra/cassandra.yaml, set the same cluster_name on every node. A typo creates a different logical cluster, even when the machines can reach one another.

cluster_name: 'Example Cassandra Production'

Use a name that identifies the intended environment. Do not reuse a production cluster name for an unrelated test cluster on the same network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure seeds

The seeds setting is a comma-separated list of stable addresses used for initial gossip contact. It is not a complete membership list and it does not make the listed nodes permanent leaders. Choose more than one seed when practical so that a single seed outage does not prevent a new or restarting node from finding the cluster.

seeds: "10.20.0.11,10.20.0.12"

Use the same seed list on all nodes unless you have a documented reason to change it. Seed addresses must remain assigned to the intended Cassandra nodes; do not point seeds at load balancers or ephemeral client endpoints.

Set a real internode listen address

listen_address identifies the address Cassandra advertises for internode communication. It must be a real, reachable address on that node. The Cassandra reference is explicit: “Setting listen_address to 0.0.0.0 is always wrong.”

listen_address: 10.20.0.11

Replace the example address on each node with that node’s own private address. Check routing from every other node, not only from the local machine. If a host has multiple interfaces, choose the interface that carries Cassandra’s private traffic and verify that reverse name resolution and security rules are consistent with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate client reachability from internode reachability

Set rpc_address to the address on which the node accepts native transport clients, and set any corresponding broadcast RPC address required by your network design. The value must be reachable from approved clients but should not expose Cassandra broadly to the Internet. Native transport commonly uses port 9042, although you must verify the actual configured value on your installation.

rpc_address: 10.20.0.11
# Set broadcast_rpc_address when the node's client-visible address differs.

When clients connect through a separate network interface, configure the client-facing address deliberately and test the address that drivers receive in node metadata. Do not assume that the address used for internode gossip is automatically the correct client address.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Choose the snitch and define racks

Set:

endpoint_snitch: GossipingPropertyFileSnitch

The Apache reference describes GossipingPropertyFileSnitch as the production go-to. In /etc/cassandra/cassandra-rackdc.properties, assign each node’s datacenter and rack:

dc=dc1
rack=rack1

Use values that describe real failure domains. For example, nodes in different availability zones may use different racks, while nodes in the same zone share a rack label. Keep the topology vocabulary consistent on every node. Changing to an incompatible snitch after data has been inserted can cause data loss, so select and test the snitch before production writes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open only the network paths Cassandra needs

Firewall rules must allow node-to-node communication on the storage port and restrict client and administration paths. The default storage port is 7000; use the configured alternative if you changed it.

Path Purpose Exposure guidance
Storage port 7000 by default Gossip and internode messaging. Allow only between Cassandra nodes. Keep it private.
Native transport, commonly 9042 CQL connections from applications and cqlsh. Allow only approved application and administration networks; verify the configured port.
JMX and operating-system access nodetool, service administration, logs, and host operations. Restrict separately with host controls and network policy. No single firewall rule replaces authentication and OS access control.

If traffic crosses an untrusted network, configure server-to-server encryption in server_encryption_options. Configure client-to-node encryption when applications require TLS, and distribute certificates and trust material through your normal secret-management process.

The default AllowAllAuthenticator and AllowAllAuthorizer settings are not a production security design. Select authentication and authorization deliberately. If you enable password authentication or CassandraAuthorizer, increase the system_auth keyspace replication as advised by the Apache reference so authentication metadata is not dependent on a single replica.

Start the cluster in a controlled order

Bring up the first node

After reviewing the first node’s configuration, start it and follow the log:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo systemctl start cassandra
sudo tail -f /var/log/cassandra/system.log

Use the log location installed by your package if it differs. Wait for the node to initialize before starting another node. Errors about an unreachable listen address, an incorrect cluster name, or an invalid topology should be corrected before proceeding.

Add the remaining nodes one at a time

Copy the intended configuration pattern to the second and third nodes, changing only values that are node-specific—especially listen_address, the client-facing address, datacenter, and rack. Confirm that all nodes share the cluster name, seed list, snitch, and topology conventions. Start one additional node, watch its log and the first node’s log, then proceed to the next node only after the joining node is stable.

nodetool status

Run nodetool status from several nodes, not just one. Its view of up/down state is local, so two nodes can temporarily disagree while gossip converges or while a network partition exists.

Interpret nodetool status

The status output reports state, load, host identifiers, and topology. A healthy intended member eventually appears as UN: Up and Normal. The datacenter and rack columns must match the design you documented.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • U means the node is considered up by the node reporting the view.
  • N means the node is in normal ownership and is ready to serve its assigned ranges.
  • A joining or leaving state means streaming or topology change is still in progress; do not treat that node as ready for ordinary traffic.
  • An absent node, or one shown as down, requires log, address, firewall, and gossip investigation before application traffic is shifted to it.

Use nodetool describecluster to inspect cluster identity and schema agreement. A node count that looks correct is not enough if schema versions disagree.

Create keyspaces with a topology-aware replication strategy

Do not copy a single-node keyspace definition into production without changing its replication strategy. Application keyspaces should use a topology-aware strategy and a replication factor that matches the failure model. The correct factor depends on the number of nodes, datacenters, racks, availability targets, and consistency levels; RF=3 is an example for some three-node designs, not a universal requirement.

CREATE KEYSPACE orders
WITH replication = {
  'class': 'NetworkTopologyStrategy',
  'dc1': 3
};

The example places three replicas in dc1. In a multi-datacenter design, specify each datacenter’s intended factor explicitly rather than using a generic factor that ignores topology.

Choose consistency levels with the workload. A higher consistency level can require more live replicas and adds latency or availability constraints; a lower level may remain available during more failures but provides a weaker read or write guarantee. Document the selected levels beside the application schema and test them during node loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate membership, schema, and client access

Check from more than one node

  1. Run nodetool status from every node and confirm the intended members are UN.
  2. Confirm each node shows the expected datacenter and rack.
  3. Run nodetool describecluster and check that schema versions converge.
  4. Inspect system.log on all nodes for repeated gossip, connection, authentication, or streaming errors.
  5. Connect with cqlsh from an approved client network and create a disposable test keyspace and table.
  6. Perform a write and read through the same consistency levels the application will use, then remove the test objects.

Do not declare the cluster ready merely because the service process is running. Membership, topology, schema agreement, client reachability, and security controls all need to be verified.

Make backups and repair part of normal operations

Back up data and test restoration

Use snapshots and/or incremental backup controls. Cassandra supplies nodetool snapshot, enablebackup, and statusbackup for these operations. Store backup data outside the failure domain of the source node and document retention, encryption, and access controls.

A backup is not validated until restoration works. Test restoration in an environment that matches production closely enough to expose version, schema, permissions, disk, and topology problems. Record the time required to restore and the steps needed to bring applications back online.

Schedule repair deliberately

Repair is an operator-controlled task, not a substitute for backups. The repair guide states that incremental repair is the default. In each datacenter, running nodetool repair -pr on every node avoids duplicate primary-range work.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
nodetool repair -pr

Run occasional full repairs as well: incremental repair does not cover every corruption and operator-error scenario. Repair often enough that unrepaired data does not outlive gc_grace_period. The correct interval depends on workload, topology, and Cassandra version, so derive it from measured repair duration and operational capacity rather than adopting an arbitrary calendar rule.

Handle topology and replication changes safely

Changing a keyspace replication factor

Increasing a replication factor changes the number of intended replicas but does not instantly copy all existing data to them. After increasing RF, run a full repair to stream existing data to the new replicas. Roll the work to limit load and monitor disk, network, and compaction pressure.

Reducing RF requires nodetool cleanup so nodes discard data that no longer belongs to them. Perform cleanup only after the new replication settings are correct and the cluster is stable. Keep a recovery plan because cleanup removes data from the local node according to the new ownership.

Adding nodes or changing racks and datacenters

Adding capacity is a streaming event, not just a package installation. Plan disk, network, token ownership, repair, and application impact before changing topology. Verify that streaming completes, check nodetool status and logs, and schedule the required repair afterward. A rack or datacenter label change can alter replica placement; treat it as a data-placement operation and validate the resulting ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the failures operators see most often

nodetool status does not show every node as UN

  • Check the joining node’s system.log for a wrong listen_address, cluster-name mismatch, seed connection failure, or rejected authentication.
  • From both nodes, test private-address routing and confirm the storage port is allowed in both directions.
  • Verify that the node is using the same Cassandra major and minor version and the same snitch configuration.
  • Run status from a second and third node to distinguish a local view from a cluster-wide outage.
  • Wait for streaming to finish if the node is shown as joining or leaving; do not send normal traffic to it prematurely.

The node starts but clients cannot connect

  • Confirm rpc_address and any broadcast RPC setting advertise an address reachable from the client network.
  • Verify the configured native transport port; 9042 is common but not guaranteed.
  • Check client-to-node TLS requirements and credentials separately from internode encryption.
  • Ensure the firewall permits only the approved client ranges and that a load balancer is not advertising an address Cassandra does not know how to return to drivers.

Nodes show different topology or schema

  • Compare cassandra-rackdc.properties and confirm datacenter and rack names are spelled identically where they should be.
  • Run nodetool describecluster and inspect schema versions.
  • Review logs for a node that was started with an old configuration directory or a different cluster name.
  • Do not change snitches casually after data insertion; an incompatible change can cause data loss.

Single datacenter or multiple datacenters?

Design Strength Trade-off Configuration implication
Single datacenter Simpler operations and lower cross-site latency and network cost. A site-level outage can affect every node and replica. Use rack labels for meaningful local failure domains and set RF for the available racks and hosts.
Multiple datacenters Improved site-failure isolation and the option to serve locally. Higher network cost, cross-datacenter latency, and more complex repair and capacity planning. Use GossipingPropertyFileSnitch, explicit datacenter/rack properties, and per-datacenter NetworkTopologyStrategy factors.

Do not create a second datacenter merely to make the topology look more resilient. It must have independent capacity, networking, operations, and a replication strategy that justifies the additional failure domain.

Cloud virtual machines or bare metal?

Either can host Cassandra when the underlying design is sound. Cloud virtual machines make private networking, replacement, snapshots, and capacity changes convenient, but disk latency and noisy-neighbor behavior must be measured and controlled. Bare metal can provide more predictable disk latency and direct hardware ownership, while replacement and remote recovery may take more planning. In both cases, prioritize stable private networking, reliable disks, independent failure domains, and a backup process that does not depend on the source host remaining healthy.

Production readiness checklist

  • Every node runs the same supported Cassandra version and Java 11 or 17.
  • Every node has a stable, reachable private address and synchronized time.
  • The cluster name, seed list, snitch, datacenter, and rack conventions are documented and consistent.
  • listen_address is a real node address, never 0.0.0.0.
  • Storage traffic is private between Cassandra nodes; native transport is limited to approved clients.
  • Server-to-server and client-to-node encryption requirements are decided before production data is written.
  • Authentication and authorization replace the permissive defaults, with adequate system_auth replication when required.
  • nodetool status shows intended healthy members as UN from multiple nodes, and schema versions agree.
  • Keyspaces use a topology-aware replication strategy whose factor matches the failure model.
  • Snapshots or incremental backups run on a schedule, and restoration has been tested.
  • Repair is scheduled so unrepaired data does not outlive gc_grace_period.
  • Replication-factor changes, node additions, and topology changes include capacity checks, streaming verification, and the required repair or cleanup.
