Docker is usually the quickest, most repeatable route; the .deb package gives tighter integration with the host operating system. Whichever route you choose, keep authentication enabled, expose port 8529 only to trusted networks, and put the database files on durable storage.

| Option | Operational control | Persistence | Authentication setup | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Native .deb package |
Highest host integration; Ubuntu services and files are managed directly | Stored on the VPS filesystem managed by the package | The Debian/Ubuntu installer asks for the database root password |
Administrators comfortable maintaining Ubuntu services |
| Official Docker image | Isolated and reproducible runtime | Requires an explicit host directory or volume mapped to /var/lib/arangodb3 |
Set with ARANGO_ROOT_PASSWORD, generate one with ARANGO_RANDOM_ROOT_PASSWORD=1, or disable it only for testing |
Fast, repeatable VPS deployments |
| ArangoDB Starter | Automates a single server or a cluster and can run processes or containers | Depends on how the Starter deployment is configured | Uses a JWT secret supplied to the Starter | Structured deployments or a path toward clustering |
| Arango Managed Platform | The provider operates the infrastructure | Managed by the service | Configured through the managed service | Teams that do not want to operate a database VPS; documented availability is on AWS and GCP |
For a single Ubuntu VPS, choose the native package when host-level integration and direct service management are priorities. Choose Docker when you want a disposable runtime that can be recreated without losing data. The Starter is more useful when deployment topology, JWT handling, or future clustering needs to be explicit. Exact Ubuntu release support, package filenames, VPS requirements, and managed-service terms change with ArangoDB releases, so check the current ArangoDB documentation for the version you intend to run.
Prepare the Ubuntu VPS
Confirm the CPU architecture and release
ArangoDB publishes Linux builds for x86-64 and 64-bit ARM, with instruction-set and page-size requirements documented for each release. Check the VPS architecture before downloading a package or selecting an image. A package built for the wrong architecture will not install, and an otherwise supported ARM server can still fail if it does not meet the release’s required CPU or memory-page characteristics.

Also identify the Ubuntu release and whether another database process is already using port 8529. Do not assume that a package filename or repository entry from an older ArangoDB release remains valid for your VPS.
Plan storage and network access
- Reserve a dedicated directory or volume for database data. For Docker, this directory is mapped to
/var/lib/arangodb3. - Ensure the filesystem has room for the database, indexes, logs, temporary files, and backup copies. No universal capacity number applies; size storage from your data growth and retention requirements.
- Decide which application hosts and administrator networks need port 8529. A public web interface is not a reason to make the database port public.
- Configure the VPS firewall or cloud security group so inbound TCP 8529 is limited to those trusted sources.
- Plan how passwords, JWT secrets, and backups will be stored separately from the database host when possible.
Install ArangoDB with the official Ubuntu package
1. Download the matching package
Use ArangoDB’s current official Download page, select the Ubuntu/Debian distribution that matches the VPS, and select the correct CPU architecture. Exact filenames and supported Ubuntu releases vary by ArangoDB version, so do not hard-code an old package URL in a deployment script without checking the release documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
2. Verify the archive when a checksum is published
After downloading the file, calculate its SHA-256 checksum and compare it with the value published for that release:
sha256sum <filename>.deb
A mismatch means the file should not be installed. Download it again from the official distribution channel and investigate the cause rather than bypassing the check.
3. Install the package
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ./<filename>.deb
The Debian-based installer asks for the ArangoDB root password. Use a long, unique secret and store it in your password manager or secret-management system. Do not reuse the VPS administrator password.

4. Start and verify the service
Startup depends on the Linux distribution, ArangoDB release, and whether you selected a single server or cluster deployment. Follow the startup procedure in the installation instructions for that release instead of assuming one universal service command. Once it is running, verify the process with the service mechanism used by your Ubuntu installation and test a local connection with arangosh.
If the service does not start, inspect its service status and logs, then check the most common causes: an occupied port, an unusable data directory, an unsupported CPU architecture, insufficient permissions, or a package that does not match the Ubuntu release.
Run ArangoDB with Docker
1. Create a dedicated data directory
Make a directory reserved for ArangoDB data, such as /srv/arangodb. Choose a filesystem with enough capacity and include this directory in your backup plan. A container’s writable layer is not a recovery strategy: replacing the container without a mapped volume can remove the database files.
2. Start a protected container
The official image listens on port 8529. This example generates a random root password and persists the database on the VPS:
docker run -d
--name arangodb-instance
-p 8529:8529
-e ARANGO_RANDOM_ROOT_PASSWORD=1
-v /srv/arangodb:/var/lib/arangodb3
arangodb
For a password that you manage explicitly, replace the random-password setting with an environment variable supplied through your approved secret-handling process:

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
-e ARANGO_ROOT_PASSWORD=<strong-secret>
Putting a real password directly in a shell command can leave it in shell history or process records. For production, inject it through a protected environment file or secret mechanism appropriate to your Docker setup, and restrict access to that file.
3. Understand the authentication choices
ARANGO_ROOT_PASSWORDsets a chosen root password.ARANGO_RANDOM_ROOT_PASSWORD=1asks the image to generate one. Retrieve the generated value from the container’s startup logs and move it into a secure secret store immediately.ARANGO_NO_AUTH=1disables authentication. The Docker documentation limits this to testing or a genuinely trusted network and warns that disabling authentication in production exposes all data. Never publish an unauthenticated instance to the internet.
Use only one authentication approach for a normal start. If an existing data directory already contains a database, changing environment variables does not necessarily rewrite credentials inside that database; follow the release’s password-management procedure instead.
4. Confirm the container and port
docker ps
You should see arangodb-instance with a port mapping for 8529. A browser or application can then use the VPS address and mapped port, subject to the firewall and ArangoDB authentication. If the container exits immediately, inspect its logs for an invalid environment setting, a permissions problem on /srv/arangodb, an incompatible existing data directory, or a port conflict.
Connect and perform first administration
Use arangosh inside the Docker container
docker exec -it arangodb-instance arangosh
This opens the ArangoDB shell inside the running container. The Docker documentation also supports invoking arangosh against a target database. If the shell must connect from another container, place the containers on a suitable Docker network and use the service/container name rather than assuming that localhost points to the database container.
Use the native installation
For a package installation, run the arangosh executable supplied by the installed release and authenticate with the root password selected during installation. Keep administrative access local or restricted to a trusted management network; do not open a database shell to arbitrary internet clients.

Reach the web interface or application endpoint
Port 8529 is the documented port used in the Docker examples. A client must be able to reach that port through the VPS firewall, cloud security group, and any local firewall. Authentication still applies after the network path works. If a browser cannot connect, test in this order: confirm the process is listening, confirm Docker published 8529 (for a container), confirm the firewall allows your source address, and then verify credentials.
Use the ArangoDB Starter for a managed topology
The ArangoDB Starter can launch a single-server deployment or a cluster and can manage processes or Docker containers. It is useful when you want deployment settings, authentication, and topology represented explicitly instead of assembled from ad-hoc commands.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Create and protect a JWT secret
arangodb create jwt-secret --secret=arangodb.secret
chmod 400 arangodb.secret
Store the secret in a protected location on the VPS and adjust the path in the launch command. The restrictive mode prevents ordinary users from reading it; also protect the containing directory and backups.
Launch a single-server deployment
arangodb --starter.mode=single --auth.jwt-secret=/etc/arangodb.secret
Adapt /etc/arangodb.secret to the actual path. Before launching, ensure the Starter can read the file and that its data directories are on durable storage. For a cluster, follow the release-specific Starter configuration for node discovery, addresses, and persistent directories rather than copying a single-server command.
Make the VPS safe to operate
Restrict port 8529
Allow inbound TCP 8529 only from the application servers, VPN, or administrator addresses that require it. If administration is performed through an SSH tunnel or private network, the database need not be reachable from the public internet. Apply the same restriction in both the VPS firewall and the cloud provider’s security group when both exist.
Best Value
Keep credentials and secrets out of routine commands
- Use a unique root password and rotate it according to your organization’s policy.
- Prefer a secret store or protected environment file over putting passwords in shell history.
- Protect Starter JWT files with restrictive filesystem permissions and include them in your secret-rotation plan.
- Create application-specific users with only the permissions they need instead of using the root account for application traffic.
Back up the data, not just the container
For Docker, back up the host directory mounted at /var/lib/arangodb3 using an ArangoDB-consistent backup procedure and test restoring it. A copy of the container definition without the mapped data directory cannot restore the database. For a native package, include the ArangoDB data and configuration locations in the backup design and follow the release’s backup guidance.
Plan updates and rollback
Record the ArangoDB version, Ubuntu release, image tag or package filename, configuration, and backup location for each change. Before upgrading, verify compatibility with the current data format, take a tested backup, and confirm how to return to the previous image or package if the new process does not start. Recheck current release notes and security advisories before production rollout because support matrices and fixes change over time.
Native package versus Docker: practical trade-offs
| Decision point | Native .deb |
Docker image |
|---|---|---|
| Initial installation | Download the distribution-matched package, verify its checksum when available, and install with apt |
Pull or use the official image and start it with docker run |
| Host integration | Direct integration with Ubuntu’s service and filesystem conventions | Isolation from the host; Docker owns the process lifecycle |
| Data durability | Managed directly on the host filesystem | Must map a host path or named volume to /var/lib/arangodb3 |
| Credential setup | Installer prompts for the root password | Environment-variable choice at container startup |
| Reproducibility | Depends on package and host configuration | Container definition can be recreated consistently; pin an intentional image version for production |
| Failure recovery | Use Ubuntu service and package logs, then repair the host installation | Replace the container while reusing the persistent data mapping |
| Best fit | Long-lived host-managed installations | Repeatable deployments and teams already operating Docker |
Neither method removes the need for firewall rules, authentication, backups, monitoring, and upgrade planning. Docker changes the process boundary; it does not make the database automatically secure or persistent.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The package will not install
- Confirm the package matches the Ubuntu/Debian release and CPU architecture.
- Recalculate the SHA-256 checksum and download a fresh copy if it differs from the published value.
- Read the package manager’s dependency error instead of forcing installation; use the release’s documented repository or package procedure.
- Check available disk space and filesystem permissions.
The service or container stops immediately
- For Docker, inspect container logs and verify the authentication variables are valid.
- Check whether the mapped host directory is writable by the database process and is not populated with an incompatible database.
- Check whether another process already occupies port 8529.
- For a native package, inspect the distribution service status and ArangoDB logs for a bad configuration, unsupported architecture, or inaccessible data directory.
The browser cannot connect
- Confirm ArangoDB is running.
- For Docker, run
docker psand verify the8529:8529mapping. - Test locally on the VPS to separate an application problem from a network problem.
- Review the VPS firewall and cloud security-group source rules.
- Authenticate with the correct root or application credentials.
Data disappeared after a container replacement
The container was probably started without a persistent mapping, or the replacement used a different host directory. Recreate the container with the original host path mounted to /var/lib/arangodb3. If that directory was never backed up and the original container filesystem was deleted, recovery may not be possible; this is why persistence and tested backups must be configured before loading important data.
A generated root password is lost
Check the container’s initial logs if they are still available and move the value into a secure secret store. If the password cannot be recovered, use the documented ArangoDB credential-reset procedure for the installed release and protect the data directory before attempting any change.

- Tested an authenticated
arangoshconnection. - Configured backups and performed a restore test.
- Recorded the exact ArangoDB version, package or image, configuration, and rollback plan.
- Checked current release compatibility and security advisories before exposing the service to production traffic.
When a managed service is a better fit
If maintaining Ubuntu updates, firewalls, persistent disks, backups, and database upgrades is not part of your operating model, ArangoDB documents its Managed Platform as a fully managed service available on AWS and GCP. It removes most VPS administration, but deployment controls, regions, pricing, and service limits are determined by the provider and should be checked at the time you deploy. A self-managed VPS remains the option when you need direct host control or a private environment under your own operational policies.
