How to Install and Uninstall Games on Xbox Without Losing Saved Data

Uninstalling an Xbox game is different from deleting its saved data. Sync online first, reinstall from your library or disc, and avoid “Delete everywhere” unless permanent deletion is intended.

Uninstalling an Xbox game removes its installed game files; it is separate from deleting saved data. Your progress is generally recoverable when the game save has synced to the cloud and you reinstall the game using the same Xbox profile. Before removing any local save copy, make sure the console is online and the save is synced. Do not choose Delete everywhere unless you intend to remove that save from the console and cloud.

If I uninstall a game on Xbox, will I lose my saved data?

Uninstalling the game and deleting its saves are separate actions in the publisher support instructions reviewed here. Bethesda says Xbox saves are stored on the hard drive and in the cloud, and warns players not to delete cloud save files while uninstalling or reinstalling a game (Bethesda Support). This does not guarantee that every title has a current cloud copy: an offline or unsynced save may exist only on the console.

Microsoft’s developer-facing certification requirements say title-save progress must be associated with a user profile and roam between supported devices when the user is signed into Xbox services (Microsoft Xbox certification requirements). That describes expected platform behavior, not confirmation that a particular game’s latest save has synced successfully.

How to uninstall an Xbox game safely

  1. Connect to the internet and launch the game. Give it an opportunity to synchronize, and wait for any visible save-sync process to finish. Bethesda advises being online and ensuring saves are synced before deleting local saves; it does not specify a universal wait time.
  2. Open the game list. Go to My games & apps > See all > Games, highlight the game, and open its menu or management options. The ESO support instructions use this route and specify choosing Uninstall all; button and menu names may differ by software version (ESO Support).
  3. Confirm the game uninstall. If your goal is only to free space, do not also select an option to delete saved data. Bethesda specifically warns against deleting cloud saves during this process.

How to reinstall an Xbox game without losing progress

  1. Find the game in your library or use its disc. ESO documents the path My games & apps > Full library > All owned games. Bethesda also identifies the library or disc as reinstall options. Menu wording can change with Xbox software updates.
  2. Install and launch the game while online. Sign in with the Xbox profile associated with the progress. Supported saves are tied to the user profile and can roam between supported devices when signed into Xbox services.
  3. Let the save sync before continuing. When the game loads online, its cloud save can sync back to the console. If the game asks you to choose between saves, do not guess: stop and check which copy is newer before selecting one.

Which Xbox save-data option deletes the cloud save?

Delete everywhere removes saved data from the console, the cloud, and other consoles you play on, according to ESO Support. It is not a normal step for reinstalling a game.

Choice What it removes What happens to the cloud copy
Delete from console The local copy on that console. ESO Support says the save can be retrieved from the cloud the next time you play, provided a cloud copy exists.
Delete everywhere The console copy, cloud save, and copies on other consoles you play on. The cloud save is deleted; this option is not a routine recovery step.

These descriptions come from the ESO Support save-data instructions. Bethesda’s sync guidance is to be online and ensure the save is synced before deleting a local copy. If sync status is uncertain or the console is offline, avoid deleting saved data; uninstalling the game itself does not require deleting it.

If progress is missing after reinstalling

  • Confirm you are signed in to the same Xbox profile used when the progress was made.
  • Connect to Xbox services and launch the game so it can check for a cloud save.
  • Do not choose Delete everywhere while trying to troubleshoot; it removes the cloud copy as well.
  • If you previously removed a local save and no cloud copy appears, the cited support instructions do not establish a way to recover a save that was never synced or was deleted everywhere.
