Yes—Chromebooks can play games, but the method depends on the device and the title. You can use Android games from Google Play on supported models, install some PC games through Google’s limited Steam for Chromebook beta, or stream supported games through a cloud service such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW. Browser games are another option. Check your Chromebook, game, and connection before buying anything; no single route works for every model or game.
Which kinds of games can you play on a Chromebook?
Chromebook gaming generally falls into four routes. Each has different device, game, and internet requirements.

| Route | Where the game runs | Main things to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser games | In the browser | Whether the game supports your browser and controls |
| Android games | On the Chromebook, through Google Play | Whether the model and individual game support Android apps |
| Steam for Chromebook (Beta) | Locally on select Chromebooks | Supported-device eligibility, hardware, storage, and beta game compatibility |
| Cloud gaming | Streamed from a service such as GeForce NOW | Service catalog, account requirements, and a sufficiently fast, low-latency connection |
Google highlights Asphalt 9, Roblox, and Stardew Valley as examples of games designed for Chromebook. The actual options depend on your device and the game’s current support. Google’s Chromebook gaming recommendations describe its suggested starting points.
Play Android games from Google Play
Google Play is available on some Chromebooks, not all of them. To check your device, first update ChromeOS, then open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that setting is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps. If it is present, look up the specific game: some Android apps still do not work on some Chromebook models. Google’s instructions for using Android apps on a Chromebook explain the setup and compatibility caveats.

- YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.
Game controls may not behave like they do on a phone. Some games support keyboard-and-mouse mapping through a game overlay; Google documents editing those controls with Ctrl+8. Whether keyboard, mouse, or touch controls work well depends on the game itself.
Install local Steam games on eligible Chromebooks
Google offers Steam for Chromebook (Beta) on select devices. Its published minimums are an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, at least 8 GB of RAM, and at least 128 GB of storage. Meeting those figures alone does not guarantee eligibility: Google also limits the beta to supported devices.

- Check your Chromebook’s processor, RAM, and available storage.
- Open the Launcher and search for Steam installer. Google says that if it does not appear, the Chromebook does not meet the beta requirements.
- If the installer is available, follow that Chromebook installation flow. Google advises against installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store because doing so can cause performance issues.
- Before choosing a game, consult Google’s Steam for Chromebook (Beta) requirements, supported-device list, and game guidance.
This is not the full Windows Steam catalog running natively. Google describes the Chromebook program as a beta in development, with known bugs, performance issues, and limits that affect gameplay and title availability. If a game struggles, lowering resolution or graphics settings and closing background apps may help, but results vary by device and title.

Stream PC games with cloud gaming
Cloud gaming runs the game on a service’s systems and streams the picture and sound to your Chromebook. That can make it possible to play supported PC games without installing them locally, but it shifts much of the burden to the network. The service must offer the game, and any required account or membership must be in place.

NVIDIA says GeForce NOW works on most Chromebooks with at least 4 GB of RAM and Chrome 77 or later. Its published connection targets are:
| Streaming target | NVIDIA’s published minimum bandwidth |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 FPS | 15 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps |
| QHD at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps |
NVIDIA also specifies less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center and recommends wired Ethernet or a 5 GHz Wi-Fi router. These are service-published thresholds, not a guarantee of smooth play on every network. NVIDIA says Chromebook 1600p and 120 FPS streaming features require GeForce NOW Ultimate. Check NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW system requirements for the service’s full details.

Choose a route that fits your Chromebook and connection
- Want to play casually without installing a desktop game? Start with browser games or check Google Play availability for your model and chosen title.
- Want to install a PC game locally? Check whether your Chromebook meets the Steam beta requirements and appears eligible through the Launcher installer. Then confirm the game is supported.
- Want access to streamed PC games? Check the cloud service’s catalog and account requirements, then compare your connection’s speed and latency with its published guidance.
- Using a school or work Chromebook? Check with the administrator if app installation or Play Store access is blocked.
Across all routes, verify the exact Chromebook-and-game combination before purchasing a game, subscription, or accessory. Support for one model or title does not establish support for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a controller if the game benefits from one
A controller is optional. Google lists gaming controllers among Chromebook-compatible peripherals and recommends checking for Works With Chromebook certification. NVIDIA documents Xbox and PlayStation controller support for GeForce NOW on ChromeOS. Compatibility can still depend on the Chromebook, how the controller connects, the service, and the game, so check those details before buying. See Google’s Works With Chromebook information and NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements.

Why a game may not work
- Google Play is unavailable: Only some Chromebooks support Android apps, and an individual game may not support your model.
- The Steam installer is missing: The device does not meet Google’s beta requirements. Steam beta access is also limited to supported devices.
- A Steam game runs poorly or is unavailable: The Chromebook beta has known bugs, performance issues, and title-availability limits.
- Cloud play stutters or feels delayed: Streaming depends on bandwidth, latency to the service’s data center, and network conditions, as well as the service’s game catalog and requirements.
- Installation options are blocked: A school or workplace administrator may restrict Play Store access or Android app downloads.
For managed devices, Google notes that administrators control app access; see its Chrome Enterprise app-management guidance. A restriction on a school or work Chromebook may not be something you can change yourself.
