The most dependable way to begin a modded Fallout: New Vegas game is to start with a clean English PC installation that includes every DLC, place both the game and Mod Organizer 2 outside protected Windows folders, generate fresh configuration files, install xNVSE directly in the game folder, and use MO2 to manage ordinary mods and launch the game. If you prefer an automated baseline, install the Viva New Vegas Wabbajack list in its own folder and follow its post-install steps exactly.
What you need before installing any mod
New Vegas mod setups are sensitive to the game edition, folder permissions and the order in which the supporting tools are installed. Confirm these requirements before downloading anything:

| Requirement | What to use | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game edition | English PC release from Steam, GOG or Epic Games Store | These are the storefronts supported by the Viva New Vegas setup. Microsoft Store editions are unsupported for this workflow. |
| Content | A clean installation with every official DLC | Many curated lists and patches expect the complete game. Missing DLC can cause missing masters, failed plugins or an incomplete load order. |
| Language and release | English, standard release | The German no-gore edition is incompatible with xNVSE, which is required by many modern mods. |
| Operating system | Windows 10 or newer, 64-bit | This is the operating-system baseline stated by the current Viva New Vegas introduction. |
| Free storage | At least 19 GB for the general setup | The guide lists 19 GB of free drive space. Mod archives, extracted files and backups can require additional headroom. |
| Install locations | Folders outside C:Program Files, C:Program Files (x86), C:Users and C:Windows |
Windows protection and permission virtualization can prevent the game or mod manager from writing files correctly. |
Do not begin with an old, already-modded directory if you want a predictable result. Uninstall or move that copy, then install the game again and verify its files with your storefront before continuing.
Prepare a clean game and generate its INI files
Install the supported game copy
- Install the English PC version from Steam, GOG or Epic Games Store.
- Install all official downloadable content.
- Choose a simple library path outside protected Windows locations. A dedicated folder such as
D:GamesFallout New Vegasis easier to permission and back up than a default Program Files path. - Do not install the German no-gore release or the Microsoft Store version for this setup.
The storefront matters because the loader, executable layout and file access behavior differ between editions. Viva New Vegas explicitly supports Steam, GOG and Epic installations; that support does not extend to Microsoft Store copies.
#1 Best Overall
- Beyond the Wasteland: The world of New Vegas is more expansive than ever. Each new distinct area presents a fresh set of branching-quests, remarkable personalities and more chances to play the Savior or the Pariah to the natives of New Vegas.
- Dead Money: Lured into a trap masquerading as the Sierra Madre Casino, you are thrown into a high stakes game where you'll have to work with three other lost souls if you want to survive.
- Honest Hearts: An expedition into Utah's Zion National Park goes horribly wrong and you become embroiled in a war between tribes and put into a conflict between a New Canaanite missionary and the mysterious Burning Man.
- Old World Blues: Transported to the Big MT research crater, you are enlisted by the Think Tank to save them from their own science experiments that have gone horribly out of control.
- Lonesome Road: Ulysses, the original Courier Six, contacts you and promises to answer why he refused to deliver the Platinum Chip at the start of Fallout: New Vegas, but only if you make one last journey into the treacherous canyons of the Divide.
Run the launcher once
Before MO2 or any mod is installed, open the game directory and run FalloutNVLauncher.exe. Let it detect the video hardware, accept both “Detecting Video Hardware” dialogs, select a graphics preset and then exit. This creates the base INI files that the game and mod manager need.
If the hardware-detection prompts never appear, close the launcher and delete the Fallout: New Vegas INI files in DocumentsMy GamesFalloutNV. Run the launcher again and repeat the detection process. Do not skip this reset when the files were inherited from another installation or an earlier mod list.
Choose manual MO2 installation or Wabbajack
Both routes ultimately use Mod Organizer 2, but they suit different kinds of players. Manual setup gives you control over every file; Wabbajack automates a published list and its exact versions.
| Decision point | Manual MO2 setup | Wabbajack list |
|---|---|---|
| Control | You choose each mod, option and update. | The list supplies a tested collection and prescribed versions. |
| Initial setup | More downloading and configuration by hand. | Wabbajack automates downloads and installation after you select folders and approve the Nexus API request. |
| Conflict visibility | MO2’s left and right panes let you inspect file and plugin conflicts as you build. | The finished list is already arranged, but you still use MO2 to inspect or add changes. |
| Storage | The guide’s general baseline is at least 19 GB free, with more space useful for archives and backups. | The Wabbajack README estimates 12.8 GB for its workflow: 9.2 GB for the game, 0.8 GB for downloads and 2.8 GB for the installation. Temporary files and backups can increase the real requirement. |
| Updating | You decide when and what to update, but must read each mod’s instructions. | Follow the list’s update procedure. An update can delete files that are not part of the modlist, so back up custom additions first. |
For a first playthrough, the Viva New Vegas list is the least error-prone starting point if you are willing to keep its structure intact. Manual MO2 is preferable when you want to learn the load order, substitute individual mods or build a smaller personal setup.
Install Mod Organizer 2 as the central manager
Install it in a separate, writable folder
- Download and install Mod Organizer 2.
- Choose a location outside protected Windows folders and outside the Fallout: New Vegas root. For example, use
D:ModdingMO2FalloutNVrather than placing MO2 inside the game directory. - When MO2 starts, create a portable instance for New Vegas. Select the correct storefront when prompted.
- Enable the profile options offered by the setup wizard, connect MO2 to your Nexus account if you intend to use Mod Manager Download, and finish the wizard.
A portable instance keeps the profile, downloads and mod data together, which makes a list easier to copy or remove without affecting another game. MO2 presents two important views: the left pane is the mod and file priority list, while the right pane is the plugin list and load order. A file can be present in the left pane yet disabled; a plugin can also be disabled independently in the right pane.
MO2 uses a virtual filesystem. It presents enabled mod files to the game at launch without copying them permanently into the game’s Data folder. This makes conflicts visible and lets you reverse a mistake by changing the mod priority or disabling a mod instead of manually hunting through overwritten files.
Install xNVSE in the game root, not as an MO2 mod
xNVSE is the New Vegas Script Extender. Its project describes it as software that “expands the engine and scripting capabilities of Fallout New Vegas.” Mods that use extended scripting generally will not work without it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Download a release from the xNVSE project.
- Open the archive and identify its DLL and EXE files.
- Copy those files directly into the Fallout: New Vegas root folder—the folder that already contains
FalloutNV.exeandFalloutNVLauncher.exe. - Do not put the xNVSE files in the
Datadirectory and do not install them through MO2 as an ordinary mod.
Launch the game with nvse_loader.exe. If the 4GB patch has been applied, the setup instructions allow launching with FalloutNV.exe instead. Keep the loader and game executables in the same root directory; placing them in a nested folder is a common reason for a script extender error.
Install ordinary mods through MO2
Use Mod Manager Download when available
- On a mod page, choose Mod Manager Download when that option is offered.
- Open MO2 and select its Downloads tab.
- Double-click the downloaded archive.
- Review the installer options, complete the installation and tick the new mod in MO2’s left pane.
For a file downloaded manually, use MO2’s archive-install button, select the archive and complete the same installation process. Do not extract random files into the game root unless the mod’s instructions explicitly require a root-level file; ordinary assets belong under MO2’s control.
Understand the two MO2 lists
- Left pane: controls which mod’s files win when two mods provide the same path. Lower entries normally overwrite higher entries, so follow the list’s prescribed order.
- Right pane: controls plugin activation and load order. Missing-master warnings here usually mean a required mod or DLC is absent or disabled.
- Profiles: allow separate mod and configuration combinations. Use a profile for testing rather than changing the load order of a stable playthrough.
Follow the curated section before adding personal choices
If you are using Viva New Vegas manually, complete its first, curated section before adding subjective changes. That baseline is intended to establish stability and core fixes. Its Extended section is modular and offers optional user-interface, gameplay, content, visual and finishing-touch changes. Add those options one at a time, read their requirements and keep a record of what you changed.

The guide presents itself as accessible to beginners and says its tools and mods were carefully selected and play-tested. That is the guide’s own claim, not an independent benchmark; there is no separate performance test establishing a universal frame-rate or crash-rate result. Your hardware, resolution and selected options can produce different results.

Install Viva New Vegas automatically with Wabbajack
Wabbajack is useful when you want the published Viva New Vegas collection rather than a hand-picked list. It does not remove the need for a clean game, correct folder permissions or the list’s post-install steps.
Prepare the folders
- Start with the clean English, all-DLC installation described above.
- Download Wabbajack into its own folder. Do not place it in the game directory or a protected Windows folder.
- Create an empty installation folder outside
C:Program Files,C:Users,C:Windows, the Steam folder and the Fallout: New Vegas folder. - Keep the download folder separate from the installation folder so archives can be reused without mixing them with the active list.
Run the list installer
- Open Wabbajack and select the Viva New Vegas list.
- Choose the empty installation directory and a separate download directory when prompted.
- Approve the Nexus API request so Wabbajack can retrieve the required files.
- Let Wabbajack download and install the list. Nexus Premium is optional; the README says it can make downloads faster but is not required.
Complete the post-install procedure
- When installation finishes, open the list’s Game Folder Files directory.
- Copy only the files inside that directory into the Fallout: New Vegas root folder.
- Allow Windows to overwrite existing files when prompted.
- Run
FalloutNVpatch.exeas administrator. - Open
ModOrganizer.exefrom the Viva New Vegas installation folder, not from a different MO2 instance.
Keep the Wabbajack installation self-contained. Adding files directly to it or updating individual mods outside the list can make later updates unpredictable. Before an update, back up personal additions and saves because the documented update process may delete files that are not part of the official modlist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pick a profile and launch the game
After manual setup, or after opening the MO2 executable inside the Wabbajack installation, select the profile intended for your playthrough. The Viva New Vegas Wabbajack documentation provides three profiles:
| Profile | Intended use |
|---|---|
| Viva New Vegas | The standard choice for a first-time playthrough. |
| Viva Wasted Vegas | A grittier experience with a different balance of atmosphere and gameplay changes. |
| Viva Basic Vegas | A lighter foundation or a base for creating your own mod setup. |
- Choose the profile in MO2’s profile selector.
- Select the New Vegas launch option in the executable drop-down.
- Start the game from MO2, not from a desktop shortcut or the storefront’s ordinary Play button.
- Begin a new game whenever the list’s instructions or an update explicitly requires one. Do not assume an old save is compatible with a changed load order.
Launching through MO2 is what supplies the virtual filesystem and the selected profile. Starting the game outside MO2 can make enabled mods appear to be missing even though the files are installed correctly.

Troubleshoot the failures that happen most often
The launcher never creates or refreshes INI files
Exit the launcher, delete the Fallout: New Vegas INI files in DocumentsMy GamesFalloutNV, then run FalloutNVLauncher.exe again. Accept both hardware-detection prompts and exit after choosing a preset. If Windows refuses to write the files, move the game and MO2 out of protected folders.
xNVSE reports that it is missing
Check that the xNVSE DLL and EXE files sit beside FalloutNV.exe and FalloutNVLauncher.exe. They must not be inside Data or only inside MO2’s mod list. Start with nvse_loader.exe; use FalloutNV.exe directly only when the 4GB patch instructions for your setup permit it.
A mod appears installed but has no effect
Confirm that the mod is ticked in MO2’s left pane, that any required plugin is enabled in the right pane and that you launched the game from the same MO2 instance. If the mod came from a manual archive, reinstall it with MO2’s archive-install function so its folder structure can be checked.
MO2 shows a missing master
Read the warning’s filename and identify whether it belongs to an official DLC or another mod. Verify that every DLC is installed and that the required parent mod is enabled. Do not start a new game until the warning is resolved; a plugin with missing masters can prevent a proper load.
Recommended Free Tools
Wabbajack stops during installation
Verify that the destination is empty and outside protected folders, the game is from a supported storefront, and Wabbajack can reach the download service after the Nexus API request is approved. Keep the download and installation directories separate. If you retry, preserve already downloaded archives rather than mixing a partial installation with a different list folder.
An update removes a personal file
This is expected behavior when the file is not part of the published list. Restore it only after checking the list’s current instructions, and keep personal additions in a separate backup so a future update cannot be mistaken for data loss.
Keep the setup maintainable
- Save a copy of the working MO2 profile before experimenting.
- Record the order in which you add optional mods and change only one group at a time.
- Keep the game root limited to files that genuinely belong there, such as xNVSE and the documented patch files.
- Back up saves before changing profiles, major plugins or the Wabbajack list version.
- When a list update requires a new game, follow that requirement instead of carrying an old save into a changed script environment.
A clean root folder, a portable MO2 instance and a documented profile give you a reversible setup: disable a mod, change its priority or restore a backup instead of reinstalling the entire game.
