In its GTA V example, you approach a character in Story Mode, speak or type a prompt, receive an in-character reply, hear a generated or cloned voice, and trigger supported actions. The reliable setup is a staged Windows installation: prepare the ScriptHookV and ScriptHookVDotNet loader, install NPCTalk and its prerequisites, configure service keys as environment variables, verify the voice server from a terminal, then connect input, personas and actions one layer at a time.
Do not use this setup in GTA Online. The project specifically says never to launch GTA Online with a script hook installed.

What NPCTalk adds to GTA V
NPCTalk is a toolkit for making game characters talk back with Fish Audio voices. Its first complete example targets GTA V and is intended for Story Mode: the project says you can talk to anyone in Los Santos, hear an answer in a character-like voice and invoke actions through the interaction pipeline.
The system is assembled from separate services rather than being a single offline mod. Speech recognition, dialogue generation, voice synthesis and action tools can be selected independently. That separation is useful for troubleshooting, but it also means a working installation requires the game-side loader, the NPCTalk package, Python tooling, ffmpeg and valid credentials for whichever hosted services you enable.

Requirements before you install
Use a Windows PC with the game installed and a separate Story Mode installation for modding. The project README lists Git, Python 3.10 or newer, uv and ffmpeg. The GTA V example additionally requires the .NET SDK 8 or newer, ScriptHookV, ScriptHookVDotNet 3 (SHVDN3 v3.6 or newer), and a scripts directory in the game folder.
| Requirement | Why it is needed | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | The documented GTA V example and loader workflow target Windows. | You can open the GTA V installation directory and run Windows command-line tools. |
| Grand Theft Auto V | NPCTalk’s example runs in the game’s single-player context. | Story Mode starts normally before any mod files are added. |
| Git | Used by the clone and package-install routes. | git --version returns a version. |
| Python 3.10+ | Required by the NPCTalk tooling. | python --version reports 3.10 or later. |
| uv | Runs or installs the Python-based command-line package. | uv --version works in a new terminal. |
| ffmpeg | Handles audio conversion used by the voice and speech paths. | ffmpeg -version prints build information. |
| .NET SDK 8+ | Needed by the GTA V example’s .NET-side components. | dotnet --info shows an 8.x or newer SDK. |
| ScriptHookV and SHVDN3 | Provide the game-side code-loading path for C# mods. | The loader files are in the folder containing GTA5.exe. |
| Microphone (optional) | Only required for spoken input; typed prompts can be used during setup. | Windows lists the microphone as an available input device. |
Prepare the GTA V mod loader
NPCTalk’s game integration depends on the standard Story Mode script-loading stack. Install the loader before debugging NPCTalk itself.
- Download and install ScriptHookV for your GTA V installation. Copy
ScriptHookV.dllanddinput8.dllinto the directory that containsGTA5.exe. The optionalNativeTrainer.asican be placed there if you want that trainer, but it is not required for NPCTalk. - Install ScriptHookVDotNet 3, using version 3.6 or newer. Put its loader files in the same game root, alongside the ScriptHookV files.
- Create a folder named
scriptsin the same directory if it does not already exist. C# mods loaded through ScriptHookVDotNet are placed or discovered through this folder. - Start GTA V without NPCTalk and enter Story Mode once. This confirms that the game, ScriptHookV and ScriptHookVDotNet load before you add another failure point.
Keep this installation separate from GTA Online. A script hook can cause an online launch to fail and can violate the game’s online rules; the NPCTalk documentation’s instruction is unambiguous: never launch GTA Online with a script hook installed.

Install NPCTalk
The project documents four installation routes. Choose one; do not install every route into the same environment.
| Route | Commands | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Codex plugin | codex plugin marketplace add christos-antono/NPCTalkcodex plugin add npctalk@npctalk |
Use when you want NPCTalk available as a Codex plugin. |
| Skills package | npx skills add https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk |
Use a skills-compatible workflow without cloning the repository manually. |
| Git clone | git clone https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk |
Best when you want to inspect files, edit the example or start the agent from its directory. |
| uv tool outside a clone | uv tool install git+https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk |
Installs the command-line tool from Git without maintaining a working checkout. |
The canonical project instructions are in the NPCTalk GitHub repository. If you clone it, open a terminal in the cloned directory before running project commands so that its configuration and examples resolve correctly.
Configure service credentials safely
NPCTalk’s documentation says secrets belong in environment variables, not in source files or committed configuration. Set only the services you intend to use, and keep the variables private.

TypeSafe actions and spoken orders | Set the key before enabling action tools or order handling. |
Open a new terminal after setting variables and verify that the process which runs NPCTalk inherits them. A frequent failure is setting a key in one shell while launching the tool from another shell, IDE or shortcut that has a different environment.

Windows environment-variable example
For a temporary PowerShell session, use the Windows environment syntax and replace the value with your own secret:
$env:FAL_KEY = 'your-key'
$env:CEREBRAS_API_KEY = 'your-key'
$env:TYPESAFE_API_KEY = 'your-key'
$env:NPCVOICE_TOKEN = 'your-token'
Do not paste real secrets into screenshots, issue reports or public repositories. The exact account provisioning and current availability of each hosted service are not established by the GTA V installation instructions, so check the service’s own documentation when a key cannot be issued or is rejected.
Bring the system up in a controlled order
Adding every feature at once makes it impossible to tell whether a problem comes from the loader, audio, speech recognition, dialogue, voice synthesis or actions. Follow this order.

Choose one engine for each job
Decide which speech-to-text engine will receive microphone audio, which dialogue engine will generate the NPC response, which voice engine will synthesize it and which action engine will interpret orders. Record those choices before testing so a later change is deliberate rather than accidental.

Build reference voices legally
Use only recordings for which you have permission. Organize clean reference clips by character and keep a record of the rights covering each clip. Do not upload copyrighted game dialogue or another person’s voice without authorization.
-
Get one NPC answering typed text
Start with text input and one nearby character. This tests the dialogue prompt, persona and voice response without adding microphone permissions, speech recognition or push-to-talk state.
-
Add push-to-talk
Once typed interaction works, bind a deliberate push-to-talk key and verify that releasing it ends capture. This gives you a clear audio boundary and is easier to diagnose than an always-listening microphone.

Add personality and scene context
Introduce the persona, current scene facts and the character’s own line samples. Keep the context small enough to identify whether a bad answer comes from the prompt rather than the model or audio path.
-
Enable actions and spoken orders
Configure physical actions last. Test one harmless order at a time and verify that the NPC’s spoken reply and the game-side action agree.
-
Verify in the real game and log timing
Approach several nearby characters in Story Mode, note whether recognition starts and ends correctly, record response latency and check that the game remains responsive. Keep the logs for each engine combination.
-
Measure voice quality before making claims
Compare repeatable samples under the same settings. Do not treat one impressive line as proof that every character or sentence will match the reference voice.

Microphone setup: when you need one
A microphone is required only for the spoken-input path. The project’s GTA V example demonstrates talking to nearby NPCs with a mic, but typed text is a supported first step for bringing up the system. You can therefore complete installation and verify dialogue and voice output without purchasing a microphone.
Best Value
When you are ready for speech, a generic USB microphone for PC is the simplest accessory: connect it directly, select it as the Windows input device, and test its level before launching NPCTalk. Use headphones or keep monitor speakers low to prevent the generated NPC voice from feeding back into the microphone. Push-to-talk is preferable in a noisy room; open-mic mode is convenient but requires a clean input and careful threshold settings.
Voice models and what the published measurements mean
The repository reports an internal evaluation for one character, Lamar, across ten test lines. Speaker similarity was measured against 60 held-out real clips, and word error rate (WER) measures transcription errors. These are undated project measurements, not a universal benchmark for every character, reference recording or run.
| Voice configuration | Voice match | Word error rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ElevenLabs instant clone | 0.612 | 10.5% | Project measurement; publication year not stated. |
| Fish Audio Drama 3, default settings | 0.643 | 7.1% | Project measurement; publication year not stated. |
| Drama 3, tuned sampling, one take | 0.660 | 7.9% | One tuned take; project measurement. |
| Drama 3, best of eight takes | 0.704 | 8.6% | Best take selected and checked; project measurement. |
| Fish Audio S2 Pro, best reference clip | 0.707 | 5.6% | Best reference clip; project measurement. |
| S2 Pro fine-tuned on the character | 0.785 | 7.5% | Fine-tuned result; project measurement. |
The README notes that one early result did not survive a second run and that an evaluation skill caught the discrepancy. Treat the table as an indication of the project’s tested configurations, not a promise of identical scores on your hardware or with your recordings. Rights to every reference recording remain your responsibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

GTA V starts but no NPC script responds
- Confirm you launched Story Mode, not an online session.
- Check that
ScriptHookV.dllanddinput8.dllare besideGTA5.exe. - Verify SHVDN3 v3.6 or newer is in the same root and that a
scriptsfolder exists. - Start the game once with the loader alone, then add NPCTalk components.
npctalk health waits or fails
- Allow for the documented cold-start delay on the first run.
- Check that the voice server is running outside GTA V.
- Confirm the launching shell inherited
NPCVOICE_TOKENand any other required keys. - Run the command from the cloned project directory when using the clone route.
npctalk say produces no usable WAV
- Verify ffmpeg is installed and available on
PATH. - Check the selected voice service key and inspect the command’s reported error.
- Play the generated WAV independently to distinguish file creation from game-audio playback.
Speech input is empty or hears the game
- Confirm Windows has the intended USB microphone selected.
- Test push-to-talk before open-mic mode.
- Use headphones or lower speakers to prevent feedback.
- Check that
FAL_KEYis available when using the documented fal speech-to-text path.
Responses sound unlike the character
- Use cleaner, rights-cleared reference clips and keep the character’s samples consistent.
- Compare one voice configuration at a time and retain the same test lines.
- Remember that the published scores cover Lamar, ten lines and a specific evaluation set; they do not establish performance for every NPC.
Actions do not occur after a spoken order
- Verify
TYPESAFE_API_KEYbefore enabling action tools. - Test a single simple order with typed text to separate action parsing from microphone recognition.
- Confirm the game-side loader is functioning before troubleshooting the action service.
Safety, online boundaries and voice rights
Use NPCTalk only with single-player games or servers you operate. The project says it does not inject into online games with anti-cheat and explicitly warns against launching GTA Online with a script hook installed. Keep a separate, unmodded online installation or remove the loader before any online session.
Voice cloning also has a rights boundary. Build reference voices only from recordings you are authorized to use. The project says it does not commit or publish voice clips, cloned voices, game audio or game dialogue; that does not transfer responsibility for material you provide locally or send to a hosted service. Obtain permission, follow the service terms and avoid distributing a character voice model made from unauthorized recordings.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Windows, GTA V Story Mode and .NET SDK 8+ are installed.
- Git, Python 3.10+,
uvand ffmpeg pass their version checks. - ScriptHookV files, SHVDN3 v3.6+ and the
scriptsfolder are in the GTA V root. - Exactly one NPCTalk installation route is selected.
- Required keys are environment variables, not files committed to the project.
- The voice server passes
npctalk healthandnpctalk saycreates a playable WAV. - One NPC answers typed text before microphone input is enabled.
- Push-to-talk works before open-microphone mode.
- Personas, scene facts and actions are added only after the basic loop is stable.
- All testing remains in Story Mode, and every reference recording is rights-cleared.
What a successful first session looks like
After the staged setup, start the voice service, launch GTA V into Story Mode and approach one nearby character. Send a short typed prompt and confirm a coherent reply and playable voice. Then hold push-to-talk, ask a simple question, release the key and verify that the transcript matches what you said. Only after those checks should you add richer personas, open-mic input and spoken actions. This sequence gives each failure a narrow cause and leaves you with timing and audio logs that can be compared when you change a model or service.
