The classic BWAPI quick start targets Brood War 1.16.1 on Windows: install the game and BWAPI, place the bot module in bwapi-data/AI, then launch the game through Chaoslauncher with the BWAPI injector enabled. That setup is specific to its documented versions; it is not a universal recipe for every bot or StarCraft client.
Before you install: confirm what the bot supports
Community bots may be packaged as Windows DLLs or Java JARs, and they can depend on a particular StarCraft version, BWAPI version, runtime, or launcher. Read the bot’s README and release notes before downloading or moving files. The SSCAIT setup tutorial describes both JAR and DLL submissions and a Java bot that waits for the game connection: SSCAIT tutorial.

- Check the target game and version. BWAPI’s classic quick start names Brood War 1.16.1 and Chaoslauncher: BWAPI quick start.
- Check whether the download is source code, a compiled DLL, a JAR, or a helper program, and confirm any required Java runtime or other dependency.
- Confirm the supported operating system and whether the instructions target classic BWAPI or another game implementation.
A public repository, such as the Stardust bot repository, can provide code and release instructions, but its public availability is not a security certification.

| Path | What it is documented to use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Classic BWAPI on Windows | BWAPI’s project quick start uses Brood War 1.16.1, BWAPI, and Chaoslauncher. | The exact game and BWAPI versions, launcher setup, and whether the bot is a DLL or uses a Java bridge. BWAPI quick start |
| Java with BWMirror | An older community guide describes BWMirror, a Java wrapper for BWAPI, with a legacy 1.16.1 setup. | The particular bot’s supported Java version and architecture, BWMirror compatibility, and packaging. Do not assume the guide’s old 32-bit Java requirement applies to current bots. Java tutorial |
| Other operating systems or game implementations | SSCAIT discusses WINE, Docker, and virtual machines for running games or compiling bots, and identifies OpenBW as an alternative. | Whether you are trying to develop a bot or run an existing competition binary. OpenBW-targeted output is not immediately compatible with the classic 1.16.1 setup. SSCAIT platform notes |

Install a classic BWAPI bot
- Install the documented game and BWAPI versions. The BWAPI example targets Brood War 1.16.1. Its README distinguishes that version from ICCup 1.16.1 for the example launcher setup; follow the bot’s own compatibility instructions if they specify something else. BWAPI quick start
- Place the compiled AI module. For the quick-start example, copy the module into the
bwapi-data/AIdirectory inside the game installation. - Start the game through Chaoslauncher. Select the BWAPI injector and launch the matching game installation. Starting the game another way may bypass the documented injection setup.
- Try a local match. The quick-start instructions describe testing against the built-in AI or in local multiplayer. Verify that the bot connects and behaves as expected before changing versions or adding dependencies.
The folder and launcher steps above apply to the BWAPI example, not automatically to Java bots, other launchers, or OpenBW.
Run unfamiliar bot files with caution
A DLL, JAR, launcher, or helper program is executable code. Game setup documents explain how bots run; they do not establish that arbitrary downloads have been reviewed for security. BWAPI says its default interface reveals only visible game-state information to AI modules, but that describes the game API—not what a downloaded program can do on the computer. The project also says defaults can be changed and that changed defaults are advertised when a match begins, unless tournament rules enforce them. BWAPI information-access defaults

- Prefer a release from a maintainer you can identify; inspect the repository, release history, file names, and instructions.
- Where source is available, inspect it, and compare the downloaded files with the project’s release instructions. Scan files with reputable security software.
- For an unfamiliar executable, use a separate Windows account or a disposable virtual machine. Keep personal files and credentials out of that environment.
- Avoid administrator privileges unless a specific documented problem requires them. SSCAIT notes that elevated privileges may help with connection troubleshooting on some systems; that is not a general requirement or a reason to run every bot as administrator. SSCAIT tutorial
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The bot does not connect
First check that the game version, bot version, launcher, and required runtime match the bot’s instructions, and that you launched through the specified injector when using the BWAPI path. If a connection problem persists, SSCAIT says administrator privileges may be needed on some systems for the bot or launcher. Treat that as a targeted troubleshooting step, not the default way to run unfamiliar software. SSCAIT tutorial
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe bot works locally but fails in a stream or tournament
SSCAIT warns that standard-output logging in a release build can cause a crash or timeout on its stream. A build that works in local testing may therefore fail in that environment; follow the tournament’s release instructions and avoid standard-output logging in the release bot. SSCAIT tutorial

The bot is for a different platform or game implementation
Recheck the target environment rather than trying to force a binary into the classic setup. SSCAIT distinguishes its Windows BWAPI instructions from OpenBW and notes that OpenBW-targeted output is not immediately compatible with classic 1.16.1 binaries. SSCAIT platform notes
Finding bots and judging download instructions
Search for a bot’s official project or release page and read its compatibility notes before downloading. Community repositories can help you find source code, builds, and setup details, but their presence—or a bot’s mention in a community discussion—does not establish that a particular binary is safe. If the release does not clearly identify its target game, package type, dependencies, and installation steps, do not guess; ask the maintainer or choose a better-documented bot.
