FINAL FANTASY XVI is marked Verified for Steam Deck, and its SteamOS compatibility record says it runs successfully. To install it, connect the Deck to the internet for first-time setup, make sure you have 170 GB of free storage, then install and launch it from your Steam Library using the default settings.
Before you install
- Internet: The Steam Deck compatibility record says first-time setup requires an active internet connection. Connect to Wi-Fi before launching the game for the first time.
- Storage: Square Enix’s current Steam listing specifies 170 GB of available storage and requires an SSD. Make sure the selected drive has at least that much free space for installation.
- Compatibility: SteamDB currently labels the game Verified for Steam Deck. Its record was tested on August 25, 2026; compatibility status can change, so check the details displayed in your Steam Library if they differ from this guidance.
The Steam listing’s Windows PC requirements specify 16 GB of RAM for both minimum and recommended configurations. Those PC specifications are not a Steam Deck performance benchmark. The listing’s expected 30 FPS at 720p for minimum PC requirements and 60 FPS at 1080p for recommended PC requirements likewise do not promise those results on Deck.

Install and launch the game
- Connect your Steam Deck to Wi-Fi.
- Open Library, find FINAL FANTASY XVI, and select Install.
- Choose the Deck’s internal storage or a supported microSD card with at least 170 GB available, then let the download and first-time setup finish.
- Return to the game’s Library page and select Play. Start with the default SteamOS compatibility setup; the available compatibility record does not call for a Proton version override or launch option.
Choose where to store the game
Internal storage is sufficient if it has the required free space. Otherwise, Steam Deck supports microSD cards and formats them for use; Valve’s FAQ identifies the file system as ext4 with casefolding. A card is optional, not a prerequisite. Check that any card you buy is compatible with Steam Deck and has enough usable capacity before installing the game there.
What to expect from Steam Deck compatibility
Valve describes the Verified category this way: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” SteamDB’s compatibility record currently marks FINAL FANTASY XVI Verified and reports that it runs successfully on SteamOS. That rating is a compatibility status, not a guaranteed frame rate or a promise of identical results on every device.

No manual Proton setting is identified as necessary. If the game will not start, first install available updates for the game and SteamOS, then review the current compatibility details shown on the game’s Library page rather than adding an override or performance tweak without a specific reason.
Internet access and the demo save
First-time setup needs an active internet connection according to the Deck compatibility record. Valve’s general guidance says installed games can be played offline unless the game itself requires internet, but that does not establish whether every later FINAL FANTASY XVI session works offline. If you plan to play away from a connection, do not assume offline access until you have confirmed it on your own setup.

Steam says the free demo includes the opening story section, and that section’s save data can carry over to the full game. Save data from the demo’s Eikonic Challenge mode cannot be saved or transferred.
