Nintendo makes money by selling dedicated gaming hardware and software, but the official unit-sales figures available here do not show how much revenue or profit comes from either category. They also do not establish the financial contribution of Nintendo Switch Online or other online services. The distinction matters: millions of consoles and games sold demonstrate scale, not which part of Nintendo’s business earns the most.
What Nintendo’s sales figures show
Nintendo reports cumulative hardware and software sales as separate unit categories. As of June 30, 2026, its worldwide totals were:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Platform | Hardware units | Software units |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 23.68 million | 58.17 million |
| Nintendo Switch | 156.59 million | 1,561.95 million |
These are cumulative unit counts, not revenue, margins, or profit. The platform totals are reported by Nintendo’s dedicated video game sales units page.

Hardware brings customers onto Nintendo platforms
Nintendo sells dedicated gaming hardware, including Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. Its official sales reporting tracks hardware units separately from software units, establishing hardware as a distinct product category. Unit totals alone do not reveal a console’s selling price, production cost, or profit margin.

Software is sold across Nintendo platforms
Nintendo also sells games for its platforms. Its top-selling Switch titles include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 71.53 million units, Animal Crossing: New Horizons at 50.29 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 38.14 million, according to Nintendo’s figures as of June 30, 2026. Nintendo notes that software totals include copies bundled with hardware or other products, as well as downloadable versions. They are therefore not counts of standalone physical copies. What the figures do not tell you about revenue
Hardware and software unit counts cannot be compared as if they were dollars. They do not establish the amount of revenue or profit earned per console or game, and they cannot show which category contributes the most financially. The figures cited here also do not break out packaged games from digital sales or provide hardware and software margins.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
To rank revenue streams reliably, a comparison would need monetary figures for the same reporting period, with categories such as hardware, packaged software, digital software, subscriptions, and licensing clearly defined. Unit-sales pages do not provide that comparison.
Does Nintendo make money from Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo Switch Online is an online service, but the official materials cited here do not establish its current revenue, profit, share of Nintendo’s business, or whether it is a material source of recurring income. Nintendo’s investor-relations news index points to earnings and explanatory materials, but the available information does not provide service-specific financial figures. It would be unsupported to assign the service a revenue share or rank it against hardware and game sales on this evidence.
