There is an unofficial Android build of ICO, but it is not a Sony release and it is not a complete game download. The documented port is built for a legally created image of the PAL PlayStation 2 disc identified as SCES-50760. To use it safely, obtain the -android.apk file from the nathanialf/ico-pc project’s own Releases page, install it as a controlled Android sideload, and supply your own disc image. Reject any package promising “ICO full APK,” an included ROM, an included BIOS, or a one-click unlock.
What the Android ICO port actually is
ICO began as a PlayStation 2 title. Sony’s release material describes ICO and Shadow of the Colossus as PS2 games and later discusses their remaster for PlayStation 3. The Android option covered here is different: it is a community project based on a decompilation, not an Android edition published by Sony or Team Ico.

The project documentation explicitly says it is not connected with Sony Interactive Entertainment or Team Ico. It also says that the game itself is not included in the repository or its downloads. That distinction matters: an APK can contain the program that runs the port without containing copyrighted game assets.

Why sideloading needs extra care
Android separates apps installed through an app store from files opened directly from a browser or file manager. A manually downloaded APK therefore triggers an “install from this source” or similarly worded permission. Official ScummVM documentation describes this behavior for manually downloaded APKs, while consumer-safety guidance recommends obtaining apps from official stores and warns that altered packages from less reputable sources can take control of a handset, send messages, or create charges.
The permission is not proof that the ICO build is malicious; it is Android’s way of making the installation source visible. It is still a meaningful risk boundary because an APK can be modified after a project publishes it. Treat the port as a controlled exception: verify where it came from, install only the intended file, and turn the source permission back off afterward.
Safe installation: a complete workflow
1. Confirm the game edition and your legal source
Check the label or case of your original disc for the PAL code SCES-50760. Do this before downloading anything. The project’s instructions identify that disc image as the supported input; they do not say that a generic ISO, a different region, or a downloaded ROM will work.

2. Use the project’s release page, not a search-result mirror
Open the nathanialf/ico-pc repository and follow its Releases link. Select the Android artifact whose filename ends in -android.apk. Do not substitute a file from an APK index, a forum attachment, a torrent, or a link that has been repackaged by another party.
Read the release notes before opening the download. They are the place to check Android-specific fixes, touch-control changes, and any release-specific limitations. If the filename does not end in -android.apk, or the page does not belong to the project, do not install it.
3. Preserve Android’s normal protections
Leave Play Protect and your phone’s routine security features enabled. Download over a connection you trust, avoid opening the APK from an unsolicited message, and keep the file until you have confirmed that the installed app launches correctly. If Android or your security software reports that the package is altered, bundled with another program, or requesting unrelated access, cancel the installation and return to the project’s release page.
4. Grant temporary install permission
- Open the downloaded
-android.apkwith the browser or file manager you used for the download. - When Android displays the unknown-source warning, choose the option to open settings for that app.
- Enable “Allow from this source” (the exact wording varies by Android release).
- Return to the installer and complete the ICO installation.
- After installation, go back to the same permission screen and disable “Allow from this source” unless you have a specific, immediate reason to install another APK from that app.
This grants the browser or file manager permission, not a blanket exemption for every application. Revoking it after the one installation reduces the chance of accidentally approving a later download.

5. Create and transfer your own disc image
The APK does not supply ICO data. Use your original PAL disc and a lawful, trusted imaging process appropriate to your equipment and local rules. Keep the resulting image private, and do not upload it, trade it, or place it in a public download folder. The project’s documented workflow expects you to provide this image to the installed port.
Transfer the image to storage your phone can read, with enough free space for both the file and normal Android operation. The cited instructions do not specify a required filename, folder, compression format, or storage capacity, so follow the current release notes if they give a build-specific path or prompt.
6. Point the port at the image
Launch ICO from the Android app list. When the port asks for game data, browse to the image you created from the PAL SCES-50760 disc and approve access. If the app cannot see the file, check that Android’s file picker can open the folder and that the image was copied completely; do not “fix” the problem by downloading another ROM.

7. Configure controls and start a test session
The release notes document touch controls and Android-specific fixes. Arrange the virtual buttons where your hands do not cover the action, then begin with a short test session. Confirm that movement, camera control, jumping, and the context actions respond before committing to a long play session. An external controller may be useful, but the cited material does not guarantee support for a particular controller model or mapping.

Do you need the PS2 disc, a BIOS, or both?
For the documented port, the essential game-data requirement is your own PAL SCES-50760 disc converted to an image. The project documentation does not state that you must download a PlayStation 2 BIOS, and it does not authorize a BIOS bundled with an APK. A website offering “BIOS included” is therefore not following the documented distribution model.
Do not obtain BIOS files from random archives. Apart from copyright and provenance concerns, an APK or archive that bundles several unverified components makes it harder to identify what you are installing. If a future release adds a clearly documented firmware requirement, follow that project documentation and use only lawfully obtained files; the current cited instructions establish the disc-image workflow, not a separate BIOS download.
Recognizing unsafe or misleading downloads
- “ICO full APK” or “ROM included.” The project states that its downloads contain no game data, so this wording describes a different, repackaged file.
- “BIOS included.” The documented Android instructions do not require a bundled BIOS.
- “One-click unlocked,” “100% free,” or forced surveys. These offers commonly move the download away from the project’s release page and may add unwanted software.
- A mirror that changes the filename. Use the release artifact ending in
-android.apk; do not assume a similarly named file is equivalent. - Requests for unrelated access. A game port should not need permission to send messages, manage calls, or access accounts. Android may ask for ordinary file access when you select game data, but stop if the installer demands unrelated privileges.
Consumer guidance from the Information Commissioner’s Office, Ofcom, the Competition and Markets Authority, and the Financial Conduct Authority advises downloading apps from official stores where possible and warns that modified apps from less reputable sources can harm a device or generate charges. The safer alternative here is not a different mirror; it is the project’s own release page plus your own disc image.

The Android route is useful when portability and touch input matter, but it adds two responsibilities that a console copy does not: you must verify an unofficial APK and supply compatible game data yourself. The PS2 and PS3 options avoid Android sideloading, while neither provides a documented way to install ICO as an Android app.

Privacy and copyright practices that keep the setup safe
- Keep the disc image on your own devices and back it up privately rather than sharing it.
- Do not install a preloaded APK simply because it is more convenient; the project says its official downloads exclude the game.
- Use the minimum Android permission needed to complete the installation and file selection.
- Turn off the install-source permission after sideloading.
- Keep a note of the release version you installed so you can compare future updates with the project’s release notes.
- If you sell, lend, or replace the phone, remove the private image and uninstall the port unless you have a lawful reason to retain them.
What is and is not established about compatibility
The project documents Android-specific fixes and touch controls, but the supplied instructions do not publish a universal Android-version minimum, supported processor list, frame-rate target, battery estimate, or guarantee for every handset. Performance can therefore differ substantially between devices. A successful installation proves only that the package installed; it does not establish that every scene will run well on your phone.
Start with the current release notes, use the exact supported disc image, and test controls before transferring a long-term save. If a release introduces a new requirement, its own documentation should take precedence over an old forum post or a repackaged APK description.
Bottom line
You can play ICO on Android through an unofficial community port, safely, if you keep the boundaries clear: download only the project’s -android.apk release, install it with temporary source permission, revoke that permission afterward, and provide a lawful image of your own PAL SCES-50760 disc. There is no legitimate shortcut in a “full APK,” ROM bundle, or random BIOS archive. When a download promises one, leave it behind.
