What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The PS5 Pro uses Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive accessory. Installation is a tool-free clip-and-cover procedure, but the first setup must be completed while the console is connected to the internet because Sony requires an online pairing step between the drive and PS5. Use the drive made for PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model groups, including PS5 Pro, and fit the supplied circle cover and long feet after the drive clicks into place.
What you need before starting
PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive as part of the console package. The compatible accessory is Sony’s Disc Drive for PS5, identified in listings as model CFI-ZDD1. Sony’s support information limits this accessory to PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000/7000 model groups. PS5 Pro belongs to the supported group, and Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide lists the Disc Drive with its matching cover as compatible.

Have the following ready:
- A PS5 Pro and the Sony Disc Drive intended for PS5 CFI-2000/7000 consoles.
- The circle cover supplied for the drive-installed configuration.
- The long horizontal stand feet supplied with the drive.
- A flat, stable work surface covered with a soft, clean cloth.
- Access to the PS5 Pro’s power cable and other cables after installation.
- An internet connection for the first-time pairing process.
Do not substitute the original PS5 base, an older CFI-1000 cover, or feet from an unrelated configuration. Sony identifies the original PS5 base and CFI-1000 covers as incompatible with PS5 Pro. The drive-installed PS5 Pro configuration uses its own circle cover and longer feet.
Check compatibility before opening the console
Look at the console and the accessory packaging before you begin. The relevant compatibility wording is the CFI-2000/7000 model group, not simply a retailer’s phrase such as “PS5 disc drive.” If a listing does not clearly identify compatibility with those model groups, confirm it with the seller before purchase.

Prepare the PS5 Pro safely
Turn the console off completely before touching the drive bay. Do not install the accessory while the PS5 Pro is in Rest Mode. Sony’s official sequence starts from the Control Center:
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Power, then choose Turn Off PS5.
- Wait until the power indicator stops flashing and turns off.
- Disconnect the AC power cord and every other cable connected to the console.
- Wait for the console to cool before moving it or removing a cover.
Put the console on a flat surface covered by a soft cloth. The cloth protects the finish while the console is upside down and reduces the chance of scratching the housing. Before handling the drive, discharge static electricity by touching a metal-grounded object. Keep your fingers away from the drive terminal and the corresponding terminal on the console; Sony’s safety guidance specifically warns against touching either connection.
Install the removable Disc Drive
The drive is secured by clips. You should not need a screwdriver or force. Follow the physical sequence exactly so the clips and cover align correctly.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Position the console
Place the disconnected PS5 Pro bottom-up, with its front edge facing you, on the soft cloth. Keep the work area clear so the console can lie flat without rocking.
2. Remove the short horizontal feet
Take off the short horizontal stand feet currently fitted to the console. Set them aside in a safe place in case you later return the console to another supported configuration. Do not pull on cables or pry against the housing while removing the feet.
3. Remove the circle cover
Slightly lift the circle cover to release its clips, then remove the cover. Lift only enough to disengage the clips. If the cover does not release with gentle, even movement, stop and check that you are lifting the correct cover and that the console is positioned as described by Sony.
4. Align the Disc Drive
Hold the drive so its clips line up with the two holes marked by inverted-triangle symbols on the PS5 Pro. These marks identify the correct attachment points. Keep the drive level while bringing the clips toward the holes; do not twist the drive into place.
5. Press until it clicks
Firmly press the Disc Drive into the console until you hear a click. The click indicates that the clips have engaged. Do not force the drive, hammer it, or continue pressing if the clips are visibly misaligned. Remove it, realign the clips with the two marked holes, and try again with even pressure.
6. Fit the supplied circle cover
Attach the circle cover supplied for the drive-installed configuration. Check that the cover sits flush around the drive and that no edge is lifted. An older CFI-1000 cover is not a substitute, even if it appears similar.
7. Fit the long horizontal feet
Install the long horizontal stand feet supplied with the Disc Drive. These feet are part of the drive-installed configuration and replace the short feet removed earlier. Confirm that both feet are seated before placing the console in its normal horizontal position.

8. Reconnect the console
Reconnect the AC power cord and the other cables you removed. Place the PS5 Pro where its vents are not blocked, then turn it on.
Pair the drive with the PS5 Pro over the internet
The first-time setup is not complete when the drive clicks into place. Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” Connect the PS5 Pro to the internet before starting the on-screen setup. A wired Ethernet connection or a configured Wi-Fi connection can provide the required access; the essential requirement is that the console can reach Sony’s online setup service.
- Turn on the PS5 Pro after the drive, cover and long feet are fitted.
- Follow the on-screen first-time Disc Drive setup prompts.
- Keep the console connected to the internet while the pairing process runs.
- Wait for the console to confirm setup before attempting to use a disc.
The requirement is specifically stated for pairing during setup. The supplied information does not establish a separate requirement for an internet connection every time you play an already supported physical game or watch compatible disc media. If setup cannot reach the pairing service, fix the console’s network connection and run the setup again rather than repeatedly reseating a correctly installed drive.
What the installed drive can play
With the accessory installed and paired, PS5 Pro can use PS5 physical game discs and supported PS4 physical game discs. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch information also identifies 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback as supported uses of the separately purchased drive.

“Supported PS4” is an important qualification: the drive does not turn every PS4 title or disc into a guaranteed PS5-compatible game. Compatibility depends on the game and Sony’s PS5 support. Likewise, the manual’s media list describes supported formats; it is not a promise that every disc in a listed format will play regardless of its contents, condition or authoring.
Safety rules that prevent damage
- Power the PS5 Pro off from the Control Center and wait for the indicator to stop flashing before unplugging or opening the console.
- Let the console cool before moving it or removing the cover.
- Work on a soft cloth over a flat surface.
- Discharge static electricity by touching a metal-grounded object before handling the drive.
- Do not touch the Disc Drive terminal or the matching console terminal.
- Never force the clips. Correct alignment and firm, even pressure produce the specified click.
- Keep the drive and console free of loose objects while the cover is removed.
If a cover or foot does not seat, stop rather than compensating with extra pressure. A mismatch usually means the wrong cover or feet are being used, or the drive has not engaged the marked mounting holes.

The drive will not click into place
Power the console off and unplug it before checking the fit. Confirm that the short feet and the original circle cover have been removed. Reposition the drive so its clips align with the two holes marked by inverted triangles, then press evenly. Do not push harder when the alignment is uncertain. If the clips still do not engage, stop using the accessory and verify that it is a Sony drive for the CFI-2000/7000 model groups rather than an older or incompatible unit.
The cover or feet do not fit
Use the circle cover and long horizontal feet supplied for the drive-installed configuration. The older CFI-1000 cover and original PS5 base are not compatible with PS5 Pro. A cover that sits high, leaves a gap or resists normal clip engagement should not be forced.

Check that the PS5 Pro is connected to the internet, then return to the on-screen setup. The drive must be paired online during first setup, so an offline console cannot complete this stage. If the network connection is unstable, restore a reliable connection before retrying. Do not assume that a successful physical installation means pairing has already occurred.

The console was unplugged too soon
If the power indicator was still flashing when the AC cable was removed, reconnect the hardware only after the console has fully powered down. Allow it to cool, then repeat the installation checks without forcing any clips or connectors.
A disc is not recognized after setup
First confirm that the drive completed its online pairing and that the disc belongs to a supported category. Check the disc for damage or contamination and try another supported disc. The drive’s compatibility list covers PS5 and supported PS4 physical games, Blu-ray and DVD media, and the formats specified in its manual; it does not establish support for every optical-disc type or every PS4 title.
How to evaluate a Disc Drive listing
If you are buying the accessory separately, compare listings on the details that affect whether installation will succeed, not only on headline price.
| Decision point | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Model compatibility | An incompatible drive cannot be made suitable by changing the cover. | Explicit support for PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model groups, including PS5 Pro. |
| Authenticity | Pairing and fit depend on the intended Sony accessory. | Genuine Sony branding and the CFI-ZDD1 identification where stated by the seller. |
| Cover and feet | The installed configuration needs the correct circle cover and long feet. | Confirm both are included, especially with open-box or used listings. |
| Warranty region | Warranty terms can differ by country or region. | Read the regional warranty wording before ordering. |
| Seller authorization | Authorized channels make authenticity and support easier to verify. | Check the seller’s status and return procedure. |
| Price and returns | A low price is not useful if the drive is incomplete or cannot be returned. | Compare the total price, stock status and return policy at purchase time. |
Stock, prices and retailer terms change, so verify those details when you buy. Sony’s official accessory is the central hardware required for this installation; unrelated software utilities cannot install, pair or repair the physical drive.
Quick completion checklist
- PS5 Pro is in the supported CFI-2000/7000 model group.
- Sony Disc Drive accessory is the correct model for that group.
- Console was turned off from Power > Turn Off PS5.
- Power cable and other cables were disconnected only after the indicator stopped flashing.
- Console cooled on a soft cloth, bottom-up and front facing you.
- Short feet and the original circle cover were removed.
- Drive clips aligned with the two inverted-triangle holes.
- Drive clicked into place without excessive force.
- Supplied circle cover and long horizontal feet were installed.
- Console was reconnected and connected to the internet.
- On-screen first-time pairing completed before inserting media.
Bottom line
Install the Sony Disc Drive by powering down and cooling the PS5 Pro, removing the short feet and circle cover, aligning the drive with the two marked holes, and pressing until it clicks. Finish with the supplied cover and long feet. Then reconnect the console and complete Sony’s online first-time pairing; internet access is required for that setup step. Once paired, the PS5 Pro can use supported PS5 and PS4 physical game discs plus the listed Blu-ray and DVD media.
