You can install The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt mods manually, through Vortex, or through Steam Workshop. For a small, carefully chosen set, manual installation is the most transparent: place each mod in the game’s mods folder and keep the required mod prefix. Vortex is more useful when you need deployment, load-order controls, and easier rollback. Steam Workshop subscriptions are stored separately and should not be mixed casually with files in the game folder.
Before installing anything, confirm your PC game edition and version, read every mod’s requirements, back up saves, and keep a way to disable all mods. REDkit is not required to play downloaded mods; it is a free PC toolkit for creating them.

What you need before installing mods
Mod compatibility is tied to the exact game build and edition, not just the title. A mod made for one release can fail after a game update or behave differently between editions. Check the mod page for its supported version, required libraries, load-order notes, and whether it changes scripts or quests.
- An installed PC copy of The Witcher 3 from Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG.
- A backup of important saves stored outside the normal save directory.
- The mod archive and its installation instructions. Do not assume every archive has the same folder structure.
- A plan for disabling mods if the game stops launching or a quest becomes stuck.
- For script-heavy collections, Script Merger and any dependency listed by the mod author.
Keep a simple text list of every installed mod, its version, dependencies, and installation method. That list makes updates and clean removal much safer.

Where The Witcher 3 looks for mods
For manual installations, mods belong in the game’s mods folder. CD PROJEKT RED’s documentation states: “Mods are installed into the mods folder in the game directory.” The game recognizes mod directories whose names begin with mod; a folder without that prefix is ignored.
The exact game-directory path depends on your launcher and library location. Use the launcher’s installed-game or browse-files command to open the folder instead of guessing a default path. You should see the game’s executable and other top-level folders; create mods there if it does not already exist.
Steam Workshop is different. Subscribed Workshop files are stored in Steam’s workshop directory, not in <GAME>/mods. Workshop content and manually copied files can interact in unexpected ways, so avoid mixing both methods until you have a clear reason and a record of what each subscription or folder provides.
Manual installation: the transparent method
1. Read the mod’s instructions and requirements
Open the archive without extracting it blindly. Look for a read-me file, a required game version, dependencies, compatibility patches, and a stated destination. Some archives contain a ready-to-copy folder; others contain an extra outer directory that must not become part of the final path.
2. Open the game directory
Use your launcher’s browse or manage-files option, then locate the top-level game folder. Create a folder named mods if necessary. Do not put manually installed files in the separate Steam Workshop directory.
3. Copy the mod folder
Extract or copy the mod’s files into <GAME>/mods. The immediate folder name should start with mod, such as modExample. If the archive produces <GAME>/mods/Example/..., check the instructions: a folder called only Example will be ignored unless the author specifically uses another supported structure.
4. Preserve the author’s structure
Do not rename internal files, move script directories, or merge two mod folders together unless the instructions say to. A mod may include additional files outside its main folder, and those files must be placed exactly where the author specifies.

5. Start the game and test a controlled save
Launch the game and load a recent backup or a test save. Check the title screen, menus, inventory, and an area affected by the mod. Test one or a small group of mods at a time so a failure has an identifiable cause.
Manual installation is easy to inspect: every folder in mods is visible in File Explorer. Its weakness is that the game does not automatically explain missing dependencies, conflicting scripts, or an incorrect load order.
Using Vortex to install and deploy mods
Vortex adds a managed deployment layer and load-order controls. It is useful when you have many mods, regularly change profiles, or want to disable and re-enable groups without repeatedly copying files.
1. Connect Vortex to your account
Install and open Vortex, sign in to your Nexus Mods account when prompted, and open the Games section. Find The Witcher 3 and select Manage. Confirm that Vortex detects the same game installation you use to launch the title.
2. Install or import mods
Install a downloaded archive through Vortex, or use its supported download integration. Vortex does not automatically know about folders that you previously unpacked into the game’s mods directory. Add those entries to mod.settings, or package the existing folders as archives and reinstall them through Vortex. Refresh Vortex after importing so its inventory matches the files on disk.
3. Deploy every change
After installing, enabling, disabling, or changing a rule, click Deploy Mods. A mod shown in Vortex is not necessarily active until deployment completes. If deployment reports a path or permission error, correct that first rather than launching the game with a partial set.
4. Set conflict and load-order rules
Vortex can manage the Witcher 3 load order. When two mods conflict, the topmost mod wins the conflicting files. Script Merger-generated merges should load first. Use explicit rules only when the mod instructions or a conflict message identifies a required relationship; arbitrary ordering can hide rather than solve a compatibility problem.

5. Test and document the profile
Launch with a test save after deployment. Record which profile is active and keep the downloaded archives so you can restore the same versions. If a manually installed mod is missing from Vortex, do not install a second copy without first removing or importing the original; duplicate folders make diagnosis difficult.
Steam Workshop subscriptions
Workshop is convenient for subscribing and unsubscribing, but it uses Steam’s separate workshop storage rather than the game’s mods folder. A subscription can therefore remain active even when the manual folder looks empty.
- Review active subscriptions in Steam before troubleshooting a supposedly clean installation.
- Do not assume a Workshop item can be managed by Vortex or by deleting a folder under
<GAME>/mods. - When switching to manual files, unsubscribe from Workshop items that provide the same feature and test again.
- Keep a note of the subscription list so you can reproduce a working setup.
CD PROJEKT RED warns that mixing Workshop subscriptions with manually installed mods can create unforeseen conflicts. Treat the two locations as separate systems and change one system at a time.
Do you need REDkit?
No. Ordinary players need only the installed PC game and the mod files required by each author. REDkit is primarily a creation toolkit for building and editing mods. The official FAQ says it is available to PC owners on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, and the May 21, 2024 announcement says it is free for owners of the PC game on those storefronts. Official setup and tutorial documentation is included.
REDkit is worthwhile if you intend to make content, inspect game assets, or learn the authoring workflow. It is not a prerequisite for installing downloaded mods, and installing it will not resolve script conflicts in an unrelated mod collection. More than 18,000 playtesters participated in its beta, but that figure does not measure the reliability or compatibility of individual community mods.

The game normally loads mods alphabetically from <GAME>/mods. CD PROJEKT RED also documents a text file at DocumentsThe Witcher 3mods.settings for per-mod controls.

Make a backup of mods.settings before editing it. Change one entry at a time, save the file, and launch the game to test. A typo or an incorrect mod identifier can leave a mod disabled or produce a load-order result different from what you intended. If Vortex manages the same files, avoid editing priorities in both places without checking which tool will overwrite the other’s settings.

Resolving script conflicts with Script Merger
Two mods can alter the same script even when their visible features appear unrelated. The result may be a launch failure, missing menus, broken interactions, or a quest that stops progressing. A conflict warning is not automatically proof that either mod is bad; it means their changes need a compatible merge or a deliberate choice.
- Confirm that both mods support your exact game version and edition.
- Install every dependency named by the mod authors, including required Community Patch components where specified.
- Run Script Merger against the installed mod set and let it identify overlapping scripts.
- For each conflict, read the mod instructions and choose the author-provided compatibility file or merge the scripts when the tool presents a valid merge.
- Save the generated merge in the location required by your installation method. In Vortex, ensure the Script Merger output is enabled and placed first in the load order.
- Deploy changes in Vortex, or verify the generated files manually, then test from a backup save.
Do not delete a conflicting script at random. If no safe merge is documented, disable one of the conflicting mods and test again. Keep the conflict report with your mod list so a future update does not erase your working solution.

Game version and edition
Compare the installed game build with the version named by the mod. A mod made for an earlier release may need an update, a compatibility patch, or removal. “Next-gen” and older builds can have different requirements; use the author’s exact wording rather than assuming interchangeability.
Dependencies
Install every listed library, framework, or Community Patch component before judging the main mod. Missing requirements commonly appear as absent items, broken scripts, or a game that closes during loading.
Folder names and nesting
Check that the immediate directory under mods begins with mod and that you have not created a double-nested path such as mods/modExample/modExample unless the instructions explicitly require it.
Quest and save impact
Mods that alter quest structure can write changed states into save files. CD PROJEKT RED advises avoiding such mods during an active playthrough when possible. Keep a clean save from before installation and do not overwrite it while testing.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game will not launch
- Disable the most recently added or updated mod.
- If you use Vortex, disable the mod and click Deploy Mods; if you installed manually, move that mod folder outside
mods. - Check the game version, edition, dependencies, and script conflicts.
- Temporarily disable all mods. If the unmodded game launches, re-enable mods in small groups to isolate the cause.
A mod does not appear
- Confirm that its folder is directly under
<GAME>/mods. - Confirm the folder name starts with
mod. - Check whether the mod is actually a Workshop subscription stored elsewhere.
- In Vortex, import or reinstall manually copied files, refresh, and deploy.
- Verify that the mod supports your game version and that all requirements are installed.
Menus, UI elements, or items are missing
Check load order and look for a conflict with another interface or overhaul mod. In Vortex, remember that the topmost mod wins a file conflict. Adjust the rule only after reading the affected mod’s instructions.

A quest is broken or progress is blocked
Disable recently added quest or script mods and load an earlier save. If the problem disappears, notify the mod creator with the game version, mod list, reproduction steps, and save timing. Do not continue saving over the affected state while investigating.
The problem remains with mods disabled
Test an earlier unmodified save and verify the base game installation through your launcher. If a clean installation is appropriate, remove third-party PC mods outside the in-game menu and perform a clean install as directed by official support. Reintroduce mods only after the unmodded game works.
Updates, rollback, and safe maintenance
Game updates can invalidate scripts, dependencies, and load-order assumptions. Before updating, export or record your mod list, preserve downloaded archives, and back up saves. After the update, check every mod’s compatibility statement instead of launching a heavily modded save immediately.

- Change one variable at a time: game update, mod update, dependency update, or load-order change.
- Keep at least one untouched save from before a major overhaul or quest modification.
- When removing a mod, follow its uninstall instructions; deleting files can leave a save dependent on data that is no longer present.
- Use profiles or a written checklist so you can reproduce a working configuration.
Official support warns that mods can cause crashes, launch failures, quest-progression problems, incorrect or missing UI elements, and consequences that remain in save files. Its practical procedure is to disable or unsubscribe mods, check whether the issue persists, contact the mod creator if the issue disappears, and load an earlier save when necessary. Support also notes that it cannot provide game support when the issue stems from mod usage: “Please note that while mods are officially supported, we’re unable to provide game support if the issue you’re encountering stems from mod usage.”

No method is universally best. Compatibility depends on the mod, your game version and edition, its dependencies, and whether another installation method is already supplying overlapping files.
A safe first installation plan
- Back up saves and write down your current game version.
- Choose one installation method for the first test; manual or Vortex is easier to diagnose than a mixed setup.
- Install one small, well-documented mod and all of its requirements.
- Confirm the folder prefix, launch the game, and test a backup save.
- Add the next mod only after the previous one works.
- When a script conflict appears, run Script Merger and follow the authors’ compatibility guidance.
- After every Vortex change, refresh and click Deploy Mods.
- Keep a written inventory and a clean save so you can disable the entire set after a game update or failure.
This staged approach takes longer than copying a large collection at once, but it gives you a known-good checkpoint and makes every later problem traceable.
