The safest way to install Ready or Not mods is to choose one management method, keep every package in a known location, and avoid duplicate copies. Use the in-game mod.io menu for the simplest supported workflow, copy a verified .pak file into the game’s ContentPaks folder when you need direct control, or use Vortex when you need deployment and load-order management. Mixing copies from mod.io, manual installs, and Vortex is the most common source of conflicts.
This guide explains where files go, how to install and remove them, how to recover after a game update, and how to identify a broken mod without reinstalling the whole game.

Choose an installation method before downloading anything
Ready or Not supports three practical approaches. Decide which one you will use for a particular mod and keep that choice consistent. A mod installed twice through different systems can appear to work while actually loading two versions of the same package.

For a first installation, mod.io is usually the least error-prone because the game supplies the browsing and removal interface. Manual installation is the clearest option when a creator provides a standalone archive or when you need to know exactly what is in the game folder. Vortex is useful when you need a repeatable enable/disable process and sortable Unreal Engine pak support.

Prepare the game and your mod files
Check compatibility before installing
Download only an archive that clearly identifies Ready or Not and states which game version or release it supports. A package made for an older build can fail after a patch even when the file copied correctly. Read the mod’s installation notes for required dependencies, special folders, or a required load order.
Close the game and keep a change log
Exit Ready or Not before copying, deploying, or deleting files. Create a simple record containing the mod name, the exact filename, the installation method, and the date installed. This makes a later rollback reversible and prevents you from deleting a stock file by mistake.
Use one source for each package
Do not install the same mod through mod.io and then add its archive manually. The troubleshooting guidance identifies ~mods and mod.io content as active locations and warns that mod.io files can conflict with manual or Vortex installs. If you change methods, remove the old copy first and confirm that only one active copy remains.

Know the folders involved
The primary game content folder is the Ready or Not installation directory under your Steam library. Manual pak files normally sit in ReadyOrNotContentPaks. Vortex-managed sortable paks use ReadyOrNotContentPaks~mods. The presence of a file in one of those folders does not by itself prove that the package is compatible or correctly deployed.
Method A: install and remove mods with the in-game mod.io menu
Ready or Not has an official mod.io integration for browsing, downloading, and removing supported mods without opening a separate website. VOID Interactive described the integration as a way to search for and download mods inside the game rather than using the Steam Workshop or a third-party site. The integration supports .pak mods, including weapon, skin, and artificial-intelligence changes.
Install a mod
- Launch Ready or Not and open its mod.io or Mods menu.
- Browse or search for the package you want. Read its description and compatibility notes before selecting it.
- Choose the in-game download or subscribe action shown by the current menu.
- Wait for the download and extraction to finish. Do not close the game while the menu still reports an active operation.
- Restart the game if the mod’s instructions require it, then test the affected map, weapon, skin, or AI behavior in a low-risk session.
Remove a mod
- Return to the same in-game mod.io menu.
- Locate the installed package and choose its remove or unsubscribe action.
- Restart Ready or Not if the menu requests it, then confirm that the content is no longer active.
An official announcement historically documented mod.io files being extracted from C:/Users/Public/mod.io/3791/mods into steamappscommonReady Or NotReadyOrNotContentPaks. Treat that location as historical documentation, not a promise that every current build uses the same path. Prefer the current in-game workflow and inspect the active folders only when diagnosing a conflict.

When mod.io is the right choice
Use mod.io when convenience and clean in-game discovery matter more than seeing every file. It is also the easiest method for removing a supported package through the same interface used to install it. Avoid it for a package whose creator explicitly requires a manual folder, a special dependency, or a particular Vortex deployment rule.
Method B: manually install a Nexus or archive-based .pak mod
Manual installation gives you the most direct control. It works when the download is an archive containing a Ready or Not pak and the creator’s instructions do not require another installer.
Install the archive
- Download the archive from a source that identifies Ready or Not and states current compatibility.
- Extract the archive completely to a temporary folder. Do not copy the compressed archive itself into the game directory.
- Inspect the extracted contents. Confirm that the payload is a
.pakfile rather than another nested archive. If there are several files, read the creator’s instructions before copying them. - Open your Steam library folder and navigate to
SteamLibrarysteamappscommonReady Or NotReadyOrNotContentPaks. Your library may use a different drive or parent folder, but the final directories should beReady Or NotReadyOrNotContentPaks. - Copy the mod’s
.pakinto thatPaksdirectory, alongside stock files beginning withpakchunk0-Windows.pak. - Record the exact filename and location in your change log. Keep the original extracted archive somewhere outside the game folder so you can reinstall the same version if necessary.
- Start Ready or Not and test the mod. If it changes a weapon, outfit, map, or AI, test that specific feature rather than assuming a successful launch means the package is working.
Do not guess when the archive has extra folders
Some archives contain a folder tree that mirrors the game directory; others contain only the pak. Do not copy every visible folder into Paks indiscriminately. Follow the package’s instructions and verify the final location of each file. A nested archive left unopened will not load, and a pak placed one level too deep will be invisible to the game.
Remove a manual mod
- Close Ready or Not.
- Use your change log to identify the exact mod file.
- Delete or move that file out of the active
Paksdirectory. Moving it to a backup folder is safer than permanently deleting it during troubleshooting. - Launch the game and test the affected content.
Never remove a stock pak or a file whose ownership you cannot identify. If you did not keep a record, sort the directory by date, compare filenames with the archive, and move suspected third-party files to a temporary backup rather than deleting them immediately.
Method C: manage Ready or Not with Vortex
The current Ready or Not extension for Vortex adds mod management and load-order support and uses the Unreal Engine Mod Installer. The extension listing records version 1.3.0 and a last-updated date of 6 October 2026. Vortex is optional; Ready or Not does not require it for mod.io or straightforward manual pak installs.
Install the prerequisites and extension
- Install Vortex and the Unreal Engine Mod Installer required by the Ready or Not extension.
- Open Vortex, choose Games, find Ready or Not, and select Manage.
- Follow the extension prompts. If Vortex asks for Unreal Engine Mod Installer, choose Fix.
- Restart Vortex after installing or fixing the required component. Restart again if the extension prompt requests it.
The extension supports several target types, including binaries, FMOD content, movies, voice-over files, sortable Unreal Engine paks under ReadyOrNotContentPaks~mods, configuration, save games, and the root game folder. The target shown by Vortex should match the file type supplied by the mod author; do not force every download into the pak directory.

Download, verify, and deploy
- Download a compatible Ready or Not mod through the workflow you normally use with Vortex.
- Open Vortex’s Mods tab and confirm that the package appears and that its files are present in the configured game-mods folder.
- Choose Deploy Mods. Accept the elevation prompt if Windows displays one.
- Wait for deployment to complete, then launch Ready or Not and test the package.
A package shown as downloaded is not necessarily installed. If the files are absent from the game-mods folder or the deployment has not run, the mod is only in Vortex’s download area. Re-run deployment after changing the load order or enabling a disabled package.
Use Vortex load order deliberately
Load-order support is most valuable when two packages alter related Unreal assets. Read each author’s ordering instruction and change only the entries that need it. If a package has no stated order, avoid rearranging unrelated mods simply to make the list look tidy; document any order that solves a specific conflict.
Keep mod locations and load order understandable
Separate active files from downloads
A downloaded archive, a Vortex staging copy, an active pak in Paks, and a mod.io extraction are different things. During troubleshooting, inspect the active game folders rather than assuming the presence of a download means the game is loading it.

Duplicate filenames or two versions of the same mod can produce unpredictable results. Check the main Paks directory, the ~mods subfolder, and any mod.io-managed content when a package appears to load inconsistently. Remove the redundant copy using the method that created it, then restart the game before judging the result.
Give maps and AI changes extra scrutiny
Custom maps can overwrite global AI parameters. A map may therefore change behavior outside the map itself or conflict with a separate AI tweak. When a map and an AI package are both installed, test them independently and then together. If the combined setup causes crashes or abnormal behavior, isolate the map and AI files before investigating cosmetic mods.
Recover after a Ready or Not patch
Game updates can invalidate a pak even when no installation step was wrong. The troubleshooting guidance recommends verifying the game through Steam after a patch causes crashes, missing assets, or corruption.

- In Steam, open Ready or Not’s properties and run the file-integrity verification command.
- Allow Steam to replace missing or damaged stock files.
- Launch the unmodded game once. This distinguishes a damaged base installation from a mod compatibility problem.
- If the game still fails, remove or disable every mod from the active locations, including mod.io content, the main
Paksdirectory, and~mods. - Launch again with no mods. If the game works, re-enable one package and restart between changes.
- Continue one at a time until the failure returns. The last package enabled is the primary suspect, although a conflict between the last package and an earlier one remains possible.
Do not reinstall all packages at once after an update. That removes the evidence needed to identify which package is incompatible.
Troubleshoot a blank or broken mod setup
The mod.io menu is blank
mod.io support identifies an invalid session ID, often after an account or profile change, as a common cause. On Windows:
- Exit Ready or Not.
- Open the Windows Run dialog or File Explorer and enter
%localappdata%. - Locate the mod.io folder and its game-ID subfolders.
- Find
user.jsonand rename it touser.json.BAK. Renaming preserves the old file if you need to restore it. - Restart Ready or Not, open the mod menu, and authenticate again.
This resets the local session file; it does not require deleting the entire local-data directory.
Vortex says a mod is installed, but the game does not see it
Open the Vortex Mods tab and verify that the files exist in the configured game-mods folder. If they do not, check that the download completed. If they are present but inactive, choose Deploy Mods and accept the elevation prompt. Then restart Ready or Not before testing again.
The game crashes during startup or a mission
First determine whether the base game works by verifying files and launching with every mod removed. If it does, re-enable packages one at a time and restart after each change. Keep map, AI, weapon, and cosmetic packages in separate test groups so a failure points to a small set of candidates. Once you identify the trigger, remove that package and check whether another copy exists in mod.io, ~mods, or the main Paks directory.
An item or weapon mod cannot be removed
Do not delete the package while its item is equipped. Reinstall the mod if necessary, launch the game, unequip the affected item, exit, and try the removal again. Removing the file while the item remains in a loadout can prevent the game from entering normally.
A modded loadout blocks entry
If unequipping is impossible and the loadout still prevents entry, the troubleshooting guidance describes clearing ModData.sav. Treat this as a recovery step: it can remove mod-related loadout data, so back up the save file before clearing it if you want a rollback.
Remove mods cleanly and switch management methods
From mod.io to manual or Vortex
Remove the package through the in-game mod.io menu first. Close the game, inspect the active folders, and confirm that no mod.io copy remains before installing the manual or Vortex version. This prevents two package versions from competing.
From manual installation to Vortex
Move the manually copied pak to a backup folder outside the game directory, record its filename, and then install the Vortex-managed version. Deploy through Vortex and verify that only the intended copy is active. Keeping the old file in a backup makes it possible to return without downloading again.

Before a major update or a clean test
Disable or move third-party files, retain your change log and backups, and launch once with the stock game. A clean baseline makes post-update troubleshooting much faster than trying to remember which packages were active.
A practical decision process
- Want the fewest decisions? Use the in-game mod.io menu for a supported package.
- Need to inspect every file or follow a creator’s archive instructions? Use the manual method and keep a filename log.
- Need deployment, enable/disable controls, or sortable pak order? Use Vortex with the Ready or Not extension and Unreal Engine Mod Installer.
- Experiencing a conflict? Stop adding mods, inspect
Paks,~mods, and mod.io content, then reduce the setup to one package at a time. - Recovering after a patch? Verify Steam files, launch unmodded, and reintroduce packages individually.
Whichever method you choose, the reliable pattern is the same: install one known-compatible package, keep a record of where it lives, test the feature it changes, and preserve a clean way to remove it. That discipline matters more than the manager itself because it prevents duplicate files and gives every crash a clear troubleshooting path.
