Before you install: check the game and the mod
You do not need REDkit to play community-made mods. CD PROJEKT RED describes REDkit as a toolkit for creating and expanding PC mods; the PC game itself is enough to play them. The publisher says REDkit is available to PC game owners on Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG, but that does not establish that every mod works the same way across those storefront versions. Read a mod’s requirements and installation notes before downloading it. Some mods may depend on other mods or need particular installation steps, and a folder path that is right for one package may be wrong for another. Choose an installation route
The official guide documents three ways to get mods: in-game mod.io, Steam Workshop, and Nexus Mods downloads. These routes do not necessarily offer the same mods, and the guide does not establish that their catalogs or compatibility are identical.

Install mods through the in-game mod.io menu
- Launch The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and choose Mods from the main menu.
- Log in with your CD PROJEKT RED account and connect it to mod.io.
- Browse the available mods and choose Subscribe for the one you want.
- Wait for the download to finish, then restart the game.
- Open Installed and confirm the mod is checked or enabled.
This route requires account linking and a restart. The official instructions do not state that every mod is available through mod.io, so check the relevant listing and its requirements. Official mod.io instructions
Install through Steam Workshop or Nexus Mods
Steam Workshop
- Browse the available The Witcher 3 Workshop mods in Steam.
- Subscribe to the mods you want.
- Launch the game and check that the selected mods are active as expected.

Nexus Mods manual installation
- Browse the The Witcher 3 category on Nexus Mods and select a mod.
- Read the mod page’s requirements, compatibility notes, and installation instructions before downloading.
- Download the files and place them in the appropriate game folder exactly as the mod author directs.
- Launch the game and verify the mod works before adding more.
There is no single folder path that the official instructions say applies to every mod. Use the package-specific instructions rather than copying files into a guessed location. Official Nexus Mods instructions

CD PROJEKT RED’s official instructions do not prescribe a universal load order or conflict-resolution recipe. A community installation guide discusses Vortex, manual installation, load-order management, and Script Merger for script conflicts; treat these as conditional tools, not required steps for every setup. - Check each mod’s requirements and compatibility notes before combining it with another mod.
- Use the mod author’s current instructions for load order or conflict handling, if supplied.
- If using a manager or Script Merger, follow that tool’s current documentation and the relevant mod instructions rather than applying a generic recipe.
- Add a small number of mods at a time, then launch the game and verify the result before continuing.
The community guide warns that unresolved conflicts can prevent startup and that updates or removals may make generated merges out of date. Those outcomes depend on the setup; if you change a mod, re-check the current instructions for affected mods and tools instead of assuming an earlier configuration still applies. Reduce the risk of losing progress or breaking a working install
- Keep a recoverable save before trying a new set of mods. Do not assume a modded save will remain compatible if you later remove or update its mods.
- Keep track of what you installed and by which route. That makes it easier to identify recent changes if the game stops behaving as expected.
- Install in small batches and test after each batch. If the game fails to launch or a feature stops working, undo the most recent changes first and consult those mods’ instructions.
- Maintain a clean repair path for your game installation through the storefront you use. Do not treat a manager or a subscription as a substitute for being able to restore game files.
These are conservative precautions, not a guarantee that mods cannot affect saves or game files. The official guide explains installation routes but does not certify community files or guarantee that a particular combination is safe.
What REDkit does—and when you need it
REDkit is the official PC modding toolkit for creating and expanding mods, not a prerequisite for installing or playing them. CD PROJEKT RED says it is available free to owners of the PC game through Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG, and that an installed PC version of the game is required to use the toolkit.
