The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is the current release, launched on September 29, 2026. Existing Witcher 3 saves are compatible, but the skill-system overhaul resets skill points. You can transfer saves through Cross Progression, and the in-game mod menu supports mods on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Performance features and targets depend on platform and hardware.
This FAQ reflects official information available on October 7, 2026. The 2022 version 4.0 “next-gen update” is now historical guidance; use Remastered instructions for the current release.

Do I need to buy The Witcher 3 again?
CD PROJEKT RED says owners of a previous physical or digital version can upgrade to Remastered for free within the same platform ecosystem. A copy on one platform does not establish upgrade eligibility on another, so check the platform and account or store where you own the game. The Remastered release is available on PC through Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net, as well as PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Will my old save work, and why did my skills reset?
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered FAQ says existing Witcher 3 saves are compatible. Earned achievements for the base game and expansions carry over. However, the new skill system changes the tree, adds prerequisites and three ranks per skill, and resets skill points. The official feature list states: “IMPORTANT: As a result of these changes, your skill points have been reset.” You will need to spend those points again in the updated tree. How do I transfer a save to Remastered?
Use Cross Progression and connect both game versions to the same CD PROJEKT RED account. The official support page documents the following PS4-to-PS5 process; steps and menu availability may vary by platform.
- Update the older version of the game.
- Open My Rewards in the older version and connect it to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a new save. Confirm that a cloud icon appears on it to verify that it uploaded.
- Open the new version, connect it to the same account, and load the uploaded save.

Can I use mods on console?
Yes. Remastered’s in-game Mods menu is powered by mod.io, and CD PROJEKT RED’s guide lists PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. A mod’s availability can vary by platform: check its Available on consoles tag rather than assuming every mod works on every system.

- Connect that account to mod.io when prompted.
- Subscribe to a mod.
- Restart the game, then check Installed to confirm the mod appears enabled.

Can I transfer or load a modded save on another platform?
CD PROJEKT RED says both platforms must have the same set of mods enabled for a modded save to work correctly across them. A missing or incompatible mod can prevent the save from loading as intended. The game marks a save made with mods with a mod.io cog icon. On consoles, achievements are disabled on modded saves. Check that the needed mods are available and enabled on the destination platform before relying on a modded save there. The official mod guide explains the restrictions.
What performance and graphics features are included?
Remastered changes rendering and hardware requirements. The features below are publisher-described capabilities, not independent performance measurements. Check the current official requirements for your PC platform rather than relying on requirements written for version 4.x.

Rendering changes include improved shading, textures and models based on assets from The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, revised foliage lighting and tone mapping, GTAO, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, and new image-based lighting. These descriptions establish which features are included, not how fast the game will run on a particular system. See the official feature list for platform details.

First check that the game is updated to the latest patch available for your platform. Hotfix 5.00c, released October 1, 2026, addressed saving and loading when the Documents folder path contained special characters, quieter voiceover audio after using pause-menu tabs, and a HairWorks change that caused performance and visual problems for some users. Patch 5.00b addressed unavailable DLSS in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version and lighting, among other adjustments. These notes describe fixes, not a guarantee that every similar symptom has the same cause.
- If saves fail on PC, check whether your Documents folder path contains special characters and install the latest applicable update.
- If voiceover audio changed after using pause-menu tabs, check for Hotfix 5.00c or a later platform patch.
- If DLSS is unavailable in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC version, check the 5.00b notes and update status.
Read the 5.00c hotfix notes and 5.00b patch notes, then confirm the latest version available for your own platform.
What happened to the 4.0 next-gen update?
Version 4.0 was the original next-gen update, released December 14, 2022 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with later platform updates. It brought visual and performance enhancements, platform-specific graphics options, quality-of-life changes, integrated community modifications, and cloud cross-progression. Patch 4.04 later brought cross-progression to Nintendo Switch. These older notes can help explain guides written for 4.x, but Remastered’s current feature list and support instructions supersede them for the 2026 release.
