On Xbox, use the in-game Creations catalog. On PC, you can use Creations or the Nexus Mods Starfield extension for Vortex 1.9.10 or newer. Keep ESM and ESL files above ESP files, follow each author’s dependency instructions, and remove the newest change first when instability appears.

Xbox Series X|S
Xbox uses Bethesda’s built-in Creations system. Open Creations from the game’s main menu, sign in to the Bethesda.net account you use for the game, and install add-ons from the catalog. You do not get the same access to arbitrary archive files, external mod managers, or manually edited configuration files that you have on PC.
PC: Steam or Xbox app
PC supports both the in-game Creations catalog and manually managed mods. The Nexus Mods Starfield extension for Vortex 1.9.10 or newer can detect Steam and Xbox installations, deploy files, and manage Starfield’s secondary data directory at DocumentsMy GamesStarfieldData. A PC installation gives you more dependency and load-order control, but it also introduces file-path, permissions, and configuration risks.

Protect saves and load order before installing anything
Make a clean save
Launch an unmodded profile, save in a new slot, and exit the game. Keep that file untouched. If a Creation is marked as non-achievement-friendly, Starfield Unity documents that it creates a [C] save fork and disables achievements on that fork. Your clean save remains the route back to an unmodified playthrough.
Do not overwrite a clean save with a heavily modded character. Keep separate slots for testing, regular play, and a recovery point immediately before a major change such as a total-conversion system, ship framework, or New Game Plus overhaul.
Archive the current load order
Before changing the list, open Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive and choose Save Load Order to Bethesda.net. The archive is useful only if it was saved beforehand and you later sign in with the same Bethesda.net account.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
To recover, return to Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive and choose Restore Load Order from Bethesda.net. Restoration does not recreate a missing archive and does not work if the active account is different.
Record your starting state
- Write down the game platform and whether the installation is Steam or Xbox app.
- Capture the current Creations list and order with screenshots.
- Note the game version and the version of every manager or framework.
- Keep the clean save and a recent modded save in separate slots.
Install Bethesda Creations safely
Read the listing before selecting Add
Open the Creation’s full description rather than installing from a thumbnail. Check for required masters, framework dependencies, patches, location restrictions, and instructions about starting a new game or using New Game Plus. A mod that works only on a new character can leave an existing save with missing records or broken quests.
Check whether the listing is achievement-friendly. If it is not, expect the [C] save fork described above and keep your original save available.
Install one logical group at a time
- Install one Creation or a small set that the author explicitly treats as a bundle.
- Return to the Creations list and confirm that dependencies are present and enabled.
- Start the game, load the test save, and visit the areas or systems the Creation changes.
- Quit to the dashboard or desktop, fully close Starfield, and launch it again before adding the next group.
Do not rely on Xbox Quick Resume after changing Creations. A complete shutdown and clean launch prevents stale-load symptoms, including textures or scripts from an older list appearing in the new session.

Install PC mods with Vortex
Meet the version and path requirements
The Nexus Mods Starfield extension requires Vortex 1.9.10 or newer. Install Vortex, let it detect the Steam or Xbox installation, and confirm that the detected game path is the copy you actually launch. Xbox app installations may be protected inside the locked WindowsApps directory; moving or installing the game to an accessible location such as C:XboxGames may be necessary for deployment.
Starfield commonly uses both the main game directory and the secondary directory DocumentsMy GamesStarfieldData. Vortex can manage that arrangement with a folder junction. Junctions are sensitive to cloud-sync tools: OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox can make the link inconsistent and, in severe cases, cause data loss. Keep the Starfield data directory out of those sync locations while deploying mods.

Deploy in a controlled order
- Install the Vortex Starfield extension and enable Starfield as a managed game.
- Set the staging and deployment locations when Vortex prompts you; verify that both point to the intended drive.
- Install a framework or master dependency first, then deploy it.
- Install one dependent mod, deploy again, and check Vortex’s warnings for missing masters or conflicts.
- Launch the game and test before installing the next group.
Keep the manager’s deployment state consistent. Do not manually copy a second version of the same file into the game directory while Vortex is managing it; duplicate files make it unclear which version is active and complicate removal.
Configure loose files and INI settings
Some PC mods use loose assets rather than a self-contained archive. Those files may require settings in StarfieldCustom.ini, including:
[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=
Vortex can detect and adjust these two values when a supported mod needs them. Follow the mod author’s instructions for any additional INI sections or values; automatic detection does not cover every custom setting.
Edit the custom INI with a plain-text editor, preserve the section headings, and change only the values the mod documents. Keep a backup of the file before editing. If the game stops launching after an INI change, restore the previous copy, then reapply settings one at a time.
Build a reliable Starfield load order
Use the file-type hierarchy
Bethesda’s support rule is:
- ESM master files at the top.
- ESL light master files next.
- ESP files last.
ESM and ESL files cannot be moved below ESP files. Within each group, use the placement instructions supplied by the mod author. A compatibility patch normally goes after every mod it patches so that its records win the conflict.
| Position | File type | Practical rule |
|---|---|---|
| Top | ESM | Load master files before dependent content. |
| Middle | ESL | Keep light masters above ESP files. |
| Bottom | ESP | Place ordinary plugins and compatibility patches here; patches follow the files they alter. |
Do not let an automatic sort override author instructions
Sorting tools can establish the broad ESM/ESL/ESP grouping, but they cannot understand every scripted dependency, quest condition, or intentional override. If an author says a framework must be above a content plugin, or a patch must be last in a group, follow that instruction even when a generic sorter proposes another position.
Change one variable at a time
When diagnosing a crash or missing asset, disable the most recently added mod first. If you change five plugins and an INI simultaneously, you cannot identify the cause. Keep a short change log with the date, files added, order changes, and the save used for testing.
Test a modded game without damaging a playthrough
- Use a test save in a safe location before entering a newly modified quest or settlement.
- Check the mod’s named locations, menus, weapons, ships, or systems rather than assuming that a successful launch proves compatibility.
- Watch for missing textures, infinite loading, broken dialogue, duplicated objects, sudden desktop crashes, and saves that fail to load.
- After every list or INI change, fully exit and relaunch the game.
- Do not save over the only copy of a character while a new script-heavy mod is initializing.
If a problem appears, return to the last known-good load order, load the corresponding save, and reproduce the issue before adding anything else. Some scripted changes persist in a save even after a plugin is removed, which is why the clean pre-mod save is important.

The Creations menu is stuck on Xbox
Clear Starfield’s Reserved Space from the Xbox storage management screen. Bethesda says this deletes downloaded Creations, so you will need to download the desired items again. Do not use this step casually when you have no record of your previous list.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The game crashes after adding a Creation
- Disable or remove the newest Creation from the in-game Library.
- Fully quit and relaunch the game.
- Test the clean or last known-good save.
- If crashes continue, remove the remaining recent additions and repair the base installation.
On PC, confirm that the game is installed on an SSD, update the graphics driver, verify or repair the game files in Steam or the Xbox app, and add Starfield to the antivirus exclusions if security software is blocking files. Bethesda explicitly warns that Creations can cause in-game issues.
Downloads fail or the catalog cannot connect on PC
- Check Bethesda.net service status.
- Try a wired connection and reboot the modem or router.
- Allow Starfield and Steam or the Xbox app through antivirus and firewall controls.
- If your router requires manual rules, Bethesda lists TCP ports 80 and 443 and UDP ports 3000–3010 for its services.
After connectivity is restored, restart the game before retrying a failed download so the catalog session is refreshed.
Textures or assets look wrong after changing the order
Fully close the game rather than using Quick Resume, confirm that loose-file settings are present when required, and redeploy the affected mod in Vortex. If the symptom remains, disable the newest asset mod and test from the last good save.
Vortex cannot deploy an Xbox app installation
Game Pass files in WindowsApps have limited access. Install or move the game to an accessible external location such as C:XboxGames when the Xbox app offers that option, then point Vortex to the new installation. Avoid placing the managed data directory inside OneDrive, Google Drive, or Dropbox because junctions can break under cloud synchronization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDisable or uninstall a mod without leaving a broken list
Creations
Open Creations, choose Library, select the item, and choose Delete. The menu also offers disabling. Disabling is useful for a quick test; deleting removes the downloaded package. After either action, fully quit and relaunch before loading a save.
Bethesda’s warning is direct: “Play with Creations at your own risk. You may experience issues with Creations.” Treat a save that depended on removed content as untrusted until it loads correctly and passes a short test.
Vortex-managed PC mods
Disable the mod in Vortex, deploy the change, and launch the game to test. If the mod has an author-provided uninstall procedure, follow it instead of deleting individual files by hand. Restore the previous load-order archive when the order itself is the problem, then repair the base files if a manual edit or failed deployment left the installation inconsistent.
Creations or PC mods: which route is safer for you?
| Choose this route when… | Why | Main risk to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Creations on Xbox | You want catalog-based installation with no external file manager. | Limited file access, Reserved Space resets, and save or achievement effects from non-friendly items. |
| Creations on PC | You want Bethesda’s supported in-game workflow but still play on PC. | Dependencies, order changes, and catalog connectivity can still cause instability. |
| Vortex on PC | You need deployment control, mod profiles, and management of loose files or the secondary Data folder. | Incorrect paths, junction failures, cloud-sync interference, and Xbox app permissions. |
| Manual PC installation | A mod author specifically documents a simple file copy and you can track every file. | Overwritten files, incomplete removal, and no automatic dependency or conflict protection. |
A repeatable safe-mod checklist
- Start from a clean save and keep it untouched.
- Save the load-order archive through Creations > Load Order > Load Order Archive > Save Load Order to Bethesda.net.
- Read every listing for dependencies, patches, restrictions, and new-game or NG+ requirements.
- Install one Creation or one small, documented mod group.
- On PC, use Vortex 1.9.10 or newer and verify the game and staging paths.
- Configure
StarfieldCustom.inionly when the mod requires loose-file support. - Keep ESM first, ESL second, and ESP last; put compatibility patches after their parent mods.
- Fully quit and relaunch after each load-order or Creation change.
- Test with a separate save before committing to a long playthrough.
- If instability starts, disable the newest change, restore the archived order, and repair the base game before adding complexity.
This process costs a few minutes per change but gives you a known-good save, a recoverable order, and a clear cause when a mod misbehaves.
