The reliable way to install satellite internet is to survey the exact location first, preserve an unobstructed view of the required sky, use a rigid mount, protect the cable and connectors, and finish alignment with your provider’s app or signal meter. The procedure depends on the terminal: Starlink is designed for app-guided self-installation, while HughesNet requires professional installation and Viasat uses certified technicians for placement, alignment, testing and activation.
Identify the terminal before you choose an installation method
Do not treat every satellite dish as if it uses the same pointing procedure. Record the provider, terminal generation, supplied mount, cable length and installation rules before you lift anything onto a roof or pole. A Starlink motorized terminal, a fixed geostationary dish from HughesNet and a Viasat installation have different alignment tools, cable limits and professional-installation requirements.

| Provider or system | Typical installation approach | Sky requirement documented in the supplied guidance | Important installation detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starlink Standard or Performance terminal | App-led self-installation is supported | About a 110° clear-sky window; Performance guidance describes clearance from roughly 20° elevation above the horizon through 360° of azimuth | Use the app’s obstruction and alignment tools; do not force a motorized dish by hand |
| HughesNet fixed dish | Professional installation is required | Clear southern-sky line of sight | HughesNet’s FAQ specifies an outdoor antenna location at least four feet off the ground; technicians must avoid power and other utility lines |
| Viasat fixed dish | Certified technician selects, mounts, aligns, tests and activates the service | Secure roof, wall or pole location selected for a clear line of sight | Technician completes connection, testing and activation before the appointment is finished |
The Starlink figures are a planning envelope, not a promise that every site inside it will work. The app’s scan at your actual location and with your actual hardware is the final check. For a fixed geostationary dish, use the provider’s site-specific azimuth, elevation and polarization settings rather than copying an angle from another property.

Survey the sky before drilling or clamping
Use the provider’s obstruction or site-survey tool
Place the terminal temporarily at each candidate location and run the provider’s survey procedure before committing to fasteners. Check the complete required view, not just the direction that looks clear from ground level. Trees, thin branches, roof ridges, chimneys, tanks, poles and neighboring buildings can enter the signal path as the dish scans or as foliage changes through the seasons.

Starlink’s Standard Install Guide specifically instructs owners to download the app, connect the dish and router, and use the obstruction tool before choosing a permanent location. Its warning is direct: “Objects that obstruct the connection between your Starlink and the satellite, such as a tree branch, pole, or roof, will cause service interruptions.” The app can also tell you when raising the terminal would improve the view.
Understand the Starlink clearance envelope
Starlink’s installation illustration shows a clear-sky window of about 110° and 20° elevation. Performance guidance describes a clear view from approximately 20° above the horizon through the full 360° of azimuth and warns that obstructions above 20° can cause occasional interruptions. Think of this as the terminal’s documented planning envelope: an object that appears low from the ground can still intrude into the required view when the dish is mounted on a roof edge or short pole. Run the app scan at the final height and position rather than estimating with your eyes.
Check the southern sky for traditional dishes
HughesNet and Viasat systems generally use fixed dishes aimed at a geostationary satellite. Confirm the provider’s required southern-sky line of sight and obtain the site’s satellite assignment and pointing values from the installer or service documentation. A compass bearing alone is not enough. Magnetic declination, nearby terrain and the exact satellite assignment affect the final direction, elevation and polarization.
Compare several mounting points
- Ground or supplied stand: Use it only where the base remains stable in wind, cannot be tipped or moved, and clears the entire required sky view.
- Roof: A roof can clear trees and neighboring structures but adds fall, structural and weather-sealing risks. Confirm that the framing and selected fasteners can carry the mount and wind load.
- Wall: A wall mount can be safer to access than a roof, provided the wall is structurally sound and the dish can see over the roofline and nearby objects.
- Pole: A galvanized pole or universal satellite-dish J-mount can raise the terminal above an obstruction. Verify mast diameter, wind rating, bracing, fasteners and local rules before buying or installing one.
Do not drill merely because one location is convenient for the cable. A slightly longer cable run to a clear, rigid site is preferable to a short run that repeatedly loses the satellite view.

Choose a mount that stays rigid in weather
Match the mount to the terminal’s mast diameter, the roof or wall structure, fastener type, expected wind exposure and local building requirements. A dish that moves a few degrees can lose its peak even when the original alignment was correct. Tighten every connection according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but do not crush the mast or enclosure.
Starlink says additional mounts and accessories are available when the supplied ground-level position cannot clear obstructions. Viasat lists secure roof, wall and pole mounting as technician-selected options. For either type of system, the mount should not rock when you apply firm hand pressure, and the mast must be plumb before you attempt fine alignment on a traditional dish.
- Use exterior-rated, corrosion-resistant hardware appropriate for the substrate.
- Keep the dish clear of gutters, roof edges and surfaces that can shed water or snow onto it.
- Do not attach a heavy pole to weak fascia, siding or masonry that has not been assessed for the load.
- Leave enough clearance to service connectors and remove the terminal without climbing into an unsafe position.
Install the dish, cable and weather protection
Secure the terminal without damaging it
Set the terminal in the supplied stand or approved mount and confirm that the locking or retention hardware is fully engaged. A motorized Starlink unit must be allowed to move as designed; never push or twist it to imitate an alignment adjustment. A fixed dish should be clamped to a perfectly plumb mast so its elevation scale and skew settings remain meaningful.

Starlink support guidance says not to extend the dish cable beyond 25 m and specifies a minimum bend radius of 10 cm (4 in). Route the cable with broad curves rather than a sharp fold, protect it from abrasion and leave a service loop near the terminal and router. Use the exact cable and connector guidance for your model; do not assume that a cable from another generation or provider has the same electrical or weather rating.

Keep water out
- Orient power-supply and network connectors downward or to the side so water cannot collect at the joint.
- Make a downward drip loop before the cable reaches a wall entry point. The loop should be lower than the connector or penetration so rain runs off instead of following the cable indoors.
- Seal exterior penetrations with a compatible outdoor sealant and avoid blocking any designed drain or vent.
- Keep contacts clean, dry and fully seated. Replace a cable or connector that is cracked, crushed, corroded or visibly wet inside.
- Follow the terminal’s specific enclosure, grounding and surge-protection instructions. Those requirements vary by model and should not be improvised.
Align a Starlink terminal with the app
- Install the provider app. Download the current Starlink app, connect the dish and router as directed, and provide power.
- Run the obstruction scan. Hold the phone at the proposed terminal position and scan the entire sky. Move the terminal or raise it if the app identifies trees, roof sections, poles or other obstructions.
- Start the alignment prompt. The app reports whether the dish needs rotation and provides an alignment tool. Follow that prompt rather than guessing from a compass.
- Let the terminal complete its movement. Keep people, tools and cables clear of the dish while a motorized model positions itself. Do not force the dish by hand.
- Secure the mount after the position is confirmed. Recheck that the terminal did not move while fasteners were tightened, then run the obstruction check again at the final installed height.
- Verify service under normal use. Wait for the app or router to report an active connection, browse several sites and run a normal speed test. Watch for obstruction or intermittent-service alerts rather than judging success from a single moment of connectivity.
If the app shows occasional interruptions despite a seemingly clear view, repeat the scan from the exact installed position. A branch that is outside the view at one angle can still enter the required window as the terminal tracks satellites.
Align a HughesNet, Viasat or other fixed geostationary dish
Start with a plumb mast
Set the mast perfectly vertical before setting elevation. If the mast leans, the elevation scale no longer represents the dish’s true angle and every subsequent adjustment becomes misleading. Confirm the bubble level on more than one side of the mast and recheck it after tightening.
Set the documented elevation and polarization
Use the provider’s site-specific elevation, azimuth and skew or polarization values for the assigned satellite. Set the dish’s elevation and skew scales approximately, then tighten them just enough that the assembly can still be adjusted. Do not substitute a value from a different town, satellite or dish model.

Peak the signal in small movements
- Point the dish toward the documented azimuth using the site information and a properly referenced compass or other approved method.
- Use the provider’s signal meter, installer diagnostics or technician procedure while making very small azimuth changes.
- Pause after each movement so the meter can respond, then make equally small elevation changes to find the strongest stable reading.
- Recheck skew or polarization if the provider’s procedure calls for it, because a strong-looking direction can still have poor signal quality.
- Tighten the hardware gradually and recheck the meter after each group of fasteners. The mount can shift as clamps are tightened.
HughesNet and Viasat installations are normally handled by professionals. If you are working on another fixed-dish service that permits customer alignment, use the provider’s documented meter procedure or request a technician rather than guessing from a compass.

Activate and test the completed installation
Alignment is not complete when the dish first acquires a signal. Confirm that the modem or app reports an active connection, then use the service for the tasks you actually care about.
- Open several ordinary websites and sign in to a service that requires a persistent connection.
- Run one normal speed test after the system has settled. A single result is a diagnostic check, not a performance guarantee.
- Check the provider app or modem page for obstruction, pointing, thermal or intermittent-service alerts.
- Repeat the check at another time if possible. Satellite geometry, rain and moving foliage can expose a marginal installation that looked fine during the first test.
- Inspect the mount, cable loops and exterior seals after the first significant wind or rain event.
Viasat states that its certified technician connects and tests the service and completes activation during the installation appointment. HughesNet’s professional-installation requirement likewise means the technician is responsible for the approved placement and alignment process.

Frequent short outages
Run the obstruction scan again from the installed position. A branch, roof edge or pole may be entering the required view. Seasonal foliage can change a site that was clear when the dish was mounted. If the app identifies an obstruction, raise or relocate the terminal rather than repeatedly rebooting the router.

A traditional dish will not peak
Verify the site-specific azimuth, elevation, skew and satellite assignment. Recheck that the mast is truly plumb and that the dish has an unobstructed southern-sky path. Use the provider’s signal meter or request a technician; random compass adjustments can move the dish farther from the assigned satellite.
The connection drops after tightening
Loosen only enough to repeat the final peak procedure, then tighten in stages while watching the meter. A mount that shifts as its bolts are tightened needs better hardware, a stronger substrate or a different mounting position.
Know when to stop and hire a professional
Do not climb a roof, drill near hidden utilities or work near overhead power lines without the required training, fall protection and site controls. HughesNet directs installers to keep the dish away from power and other utility service lines and explicitly requires professional installation. Viasat describes certified technicians handling placement, mounting, connection, testing and activation.

Use a qualified installer when any of these conditions applies:
- The proposed location is near overhead electrical, telecom or other utility lines.
- The roof is steep, fragile, wet, icy or difficult to access safely.
- The mount needs structural reinforcement, a tall mast, roof penetration or unusual bracing.
- You cannot establish a clear line of sight without working at height.
- The provider requires certified installation or site-specific alignment.
- You cannot weather-seal the entry point confidently or the cable route exceeds the model’s limits.
- The dish will not peak despite correct documented settings and a rigid, plumb mount.
When requesting help, provide the installer with the terminal model, proposed mounting point, cable route, photos of obstructions and any app obstruction report. That information lets the technician decide whether a taller pole, a wall position or a completely different site is appropriate before work begins.
