You can install an M.2 E-Key Wi-Fi card in a desktop only if the motherboard supports that specific wireless module and has a compatible M.2 Key E socket. A card fitting the socket is not enough: some CNVi modules require a system designed for CNVi, and an M.2 storage socket is not a substitute. Check the motherboard manual and the card’s interface requirements before opening the case.
Check compatibility before you buy or install
Look up the exact motherboard model in its manual or manufacturer support material. Confirm that it has an M.2 Key E socket intended for wireless modules, and check that the board supports the chosen card’s interface. M.2 Key M and Key B storage sockets are not replacements for a wireless Key E socket.

Pay particular attention to CNVi. Intel explains that a CNVi companion RF module may physically insert into a standard Key E socket but work only in a system designed for CNVi: Intel’s CNVi and CRF compatibility explanation. Do not infer compatibility from the notch or key alone. If the board documentation does not make support clear, ask the motherboard or system manufacturer.

A complete desktop kit can spare you from sourcing small, connector-specific parts separately. Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 AX200 desktop kit contents and requirements list the adapter, two external antennas, standard and low-profile brackets, preinstalled RF cables, and an installation guide. Intel specifies an M.2 Key E 2230 motherboard socket for that kit. It is an example, not a universal fit; verify your board supports the exact module.

- M.2 Key E to PCIe X1 WiFi Bluetooth adapter with SMA Antenna Kits, work with NGFF M.2 WiFi module, as well as Coral TPU (M.2 Accelerator A+E key)
- The WiFi signal goes through the PCIe X1 interface, and the Bluetooth signal goes through the USB interface (To enable Bluetooth: The USB cable needs to connect with the motherboard USB port)
- Triple Band 2.4GHz 5GHz 6GHz Antenna: 6 dBi RP-SMA Male antenna, with 2 x 15cm U.FL/IPEX4 to RP-SMA Female pigtail cable
- Compatible with BE200NGW, AX210NGW, AX200NGW, 9260NGW, 8265NGW, 8260NGW, 7265NGW, 7260NGW, and Broadcom, Realtek, Atheros NGFF M.2 2230 Interface (Key E/A+E) WiFi module. Support WiFi 4/5/6/6E/7, Bluetooth 4.0/4.1/4.2/5.0/5.1/5.2/5.3/5.4
- To be noted: can not work with M.2 CNVio2/CNVio interface WiFi module, such as intel AX211NGW, AX201NGW, AC 9560NGW, AC 9462NGW, AC 9461NGW, etc. Not support Mini PCIe WiFi module.
Intel also documents an AX210 (Gig+) IOT kit, which includes two antennas and brackets and requires an available M.2 2230 Key E wireless connector. That requirement does not establish compatibility for every AX210 module or desktop board.
If you have only the card, check that you also have compatible antenna leads, antennas, a case bracket if needed, and the correct mounting screw. Intel notes that antenna plug choice depends on connector fit, mating height, and cable diameter; its article suggests searching for “M.2 wireless antenna” or “NGFF antenna,” but those terms alone do not guarantee a match: Intel’s wireless antenna connector guidance.

Install the card and antennas
- Shut down and prepare the PC. Turn off the computer, disconnect its power, and open the case according to the PC and motherboard instructions. Follow appropriate handling precautions for internal components.
- Locate the wireless socket. Use the motherboard manual to find the M.2 Key E wireless socket. Do not use an M.2 socket intended for storage.
- Insert and secure the module. Align the card with the socket and insert it in the orientation shown by the card or board instructions. Secure it using the specified mounting point and screw. For an example of the card and desktop bracket installation, see Intel’s AX200 desktop kit integration guide; follow your own kit and motherboard instructions where their layouts differ.
- Connect the antenna leads carefully. Attach each lead to the card’s small RF connector as shown in its guide. These are delicate, press-fit connectors—not screw-on antenna fittings. Use only leads with suitable connectors, mating height, and cable diameter, and avoid forcing a connector that does not align.
- Fit the antennas and close the case. Route the leads to the supplied or otherwise compatible antennas and bracket, then secure the bracket in the case as directed. Check that cables are not pinched before closing the case.
Install drivers and confirm both devices
After reconnecting power and starting the PC, install the current Wi-Fi and Bluetooth drivers for the exact adapter and operating system. Then check the operating system’s device list to confirm that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are detected. Intel’s integration guide includes a driver step and a Device Manager view showing the wireless devices.

If the card is not detected
- Recheck the interface. Confirm the motherboard supports the module and its interface, including CNVi requirements. A physical fit does not prove electrical or platform compatibility.
- Check the socket and seating. Make sure the card is in the wireless Key E socket, correctly aligned, and secured as the board guide specifies.
- Check drivers and both functions. Install the drivers for the exact adapter and operating system, then inspect the device list for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Inspect antenna connections without forcing them. If a lead will not seat correctly, confirm its connector type and dimensions rather than pressing harder.
- Consult the board or system manufacturer. If compatibility remains uncertain, provide the exact motherboard and adapter models when asking for support.
