To make a personalized DIY advent calendar, choose the container first, then tailor its contents to the recipient. Envelopes or pouches on a string work well for notes and small treats; boxes provide more room; paper cones or doors make the calendar itself part of the craft. Not every compartment needs a purchased gift: personal messages and realistic activity prompts can make the countdown feel thoughtful without adding clutter.
Choose a format that fits the gifts and the display space
The compartment sets the size of the gift, so choose a format before shopping for contents. Compare how much room you have, how much construction you want to do, and whether you want to reuse the calendar.

| Format | Works well for | Materials and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Envelopes on a board or garland | Notes, clues, activity cards, and flat treats | Paper envelopes, numbers, string or twine, a board or frame, and clips or adhesive. Quick and lightweight, but with little room for bulky gifts. Gathered and Hersheyland show envelope-based approaches. |
| Drawstring pouch garland | A mix of small gifts and reusable compartments | Fabric pouches, numbered tags, and hooks, hangers, or another sturdy support. Check pouch capacity and balance the weight. Amanda Arneill describes this style. |
| Folded-card boxes or stacked boxes | Gifts that need more depth or a freestanding display | Thick card or small boxes. They take more construction and storage space than an envelope garland. Gathered includes box formats. |
| Paper cones or a door calendar | A display where the handmade reveal is part of the experience | Paper, scissors, glue, string, and decorating supplies. Cones suit small gifts; doors need careful cutting. See Caran d’Ache for cones and English Heritage for a printable door calendar. |
| Upcycled hanging cloth calendar | A handmade fabric look and reused materials | A stick or beam, string, cloth, pegs, and labels. This involves preparing a wooden support; Bostik describes a 24-pouch version. |
For a first project, envelopes or pouches are usually the simplest to assemble. If the gifts need more depth, use boxes. Choose the calendar length to suit your plan: tutorials commonly use 24 compartments, while Hersheyland’s activity version uses 25 cards or envelopes. Those are project choices, not a requirement for every calendar.

Plan personalized contents before you build
Start with what the recipient enjoys, needs, and can realistically do. A theme can help the calendar feel cohesive—favorite hobbies, shared memories, cozy routines, or small acts of creativity—without requiring every day to contain the same kind of gift.

- Personal messages: Write a memory, a short poem, an affirmation, a joke, or a note about something you appreciate.
- Activities: Add a prompt for a shared game, craft, outing, or seasonal activity. Keep it realistic for the recipient’s schedule; Hallmark recommends matching activities to what the family can actually do. Hallmark’s DIY ideas include activity-based calendars.
- Small useful or playful items: Consider stationery, stickers, a small toy, a puzzle, a mini game, craft supplies, or a coloring sheet. Caran d’Ache suggests small items suited to paper cones.
- Treats: Include favorite sweets or other snacks when appropriate. Check ingredient labels and the recipient’s dietary needs rather than assuming a treat is suitable.
- A clue: If a present is too large for its compartment, put in a clue telling the recipient where to find the wrapped gift. Amanda Arneill recommends this approach for oversized gifts.
A calendar can mix these ideas; there is no need to buy 24 separate objects. Gathered describes notes, poems, affirmations, jokes, and creativity prompts as possible contents alongside small gifts. Gathered’s guide also notes that choosing contents yourself gives you control over what goes in; still check food labels and any specific dietary requirements.

What you’ll need
- Envelopes or small drawstring pouches
- Number tags or cards and a marker
- String or twine, plus clips, pegs, or another way to attach the compartments
- A frame, board, hooks, hanger, or other sturdy support
- Optional decorative paper, stickers, or other embellishments
Assembly
- Choose the count and layout. Decide how many days you want and whether the display will hang in a row, several rows, or from a frame.
- Check capacity. Test the largest planned gifts in the envelopes or pouches. Put oversized gifts elsewhere and reserve a compartment for a clue.
- Number and decorate. Attach a tag to each compartment. You can arrange numbers in date order or turn finding them into a search game; for young children who prefer routine, a predictable order may be easier.
- Fill the compartments. Match each note, activity, treat, or small gift to the day and make sure it fits without straining the container.
- Attach and mount. Space compartments so they do not crowd. Spread heavier pouches across the support so the hanging bar or display sits evenly.
Hersheyland’s framed version uses envelopes, activity cards, candy, and a display structure. Amanda Arneill’s pouch design emphasizes checking fit, using clues for oversized gifts, and distributing weight along the display. Hersheyland’s instructions and Arneill’s project provide examples.
Make paper cones or a door calendar

Because cones are small, plan for contents that fit rather than trying to force in larger parcels. See Caran d’Ache’s cone-calendar instructions for the illustrated project.
Paper doors
A printable door calendar offers a different kind of reveal: the recipient opens a paper flap each day. English Heritage’s printable project calls for a ruler, craft knife or scalpel, scissors, glue, and Blu Tack. An adult should cut the doors. Follow the printable’s own assembly directions, and keep the finished calendar somewhere it will not be damaged by handling. English Heritage provides the printable and instructions.

Keep the project manageable and safe
- Choose effort deliberately. A light envelope display is a quicker build; boxes and more elaborate structures take more assembly and storage. Hallmark frames its project ideas around effort, time, family suitability, and budget, while Bostik’s calendar uses household materials. Hallmark’s ideas and Bostik’s project show different approaches.
- Use adult help for sharp tools. An adult should cut the doors for the English Heritage paper calendar. Bostik also assigns cutting wood to an adult and recommends smoothing its ends.
- Keep the display stable. Use a sturdy support and balance heavier parcels rather than placing all the weight at one end.
- Make contents suitable for the recipient. Check food ingredients and dietary needs, and choose activities the person can actually take part in.
