A full-motion TV mount must be anchored through the drywall into verified wood studs; drywall alone is not a safe structural attachment. Confirm the mount’s load rating, your TV’s weight and VESA pattern, stud spacing, drywall thickness, and the exact fasteners and pilot-bit size in the model manual before drilling.

The reliable method is to locate and verify both edges of the studs, mark their centers, level the wall plate, drill model-specified pilot holes, install the supplied lag screws, and then attach and lock the TV with a helper. If the studs do not line up, use a mount-approved adapter or reinforcement, relocate the mount, or hire a qualified installer rather than substituting ordinary drywall anchors.

Why drywall alone is not enough for a full-motion mount

Drywall is a covering, not a structural anchor for a cantilevered television. The safety instruction for the Secura QLF425-B2 states, “DO NOT INSTALL INTO DRYWALL ALONE — DRYWALL ALONE WILL NOT HOLD THE WEIGHT OF YOUR TV.” Philips gives the same basic requirement for its mounts: the wall plate must be secured to a supporting wood stud.

A fixed bracket keeps most of the television close to the wall. A full-motion arm projects the load outward and lets you swivel the set, increasing leverage on the fasteners and wall. Vogel’s explains that pulling an arm forward or turning it applies extra force to a hollow wall. That is why an apparently solid drywall anchor can loosen, tear the paper face, or pull out when the screen is extended.

  • US-based Customer Support: We are glad to help solve your pre-purchase, installation, or missing-parts questions about TV wall mounts. Please note: Mounting Dream wall mount TV brackets are NOT FOR DRYWALL INSTALLATION. (Concrete anchors are available upon request. Anchor specifications: Φ10×50mm)

For a stud installation, the lag screws supplied with the mount pass through the wall plate and drywall and bite into the center of the wood. The stud, not the gypsum, carries the load. Never assume that a screw which feels tight in drywall has reached a stud.

Confirm compatibility before you make a hole

Read the manual for the exact mount model. Limits vary even among mounts that look similar, so do not copy a bit size, stud-spacing limit, or weight rating from another product.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Television weight Use the TV’s actual weight without its stand, then compare it with the mount’s rated TV weight. The cited Secura QLF425-B2 manual allows a maximum TV weight of 120 lb (54.4 kg). That figure is model-specific.
Combined wall capacity Confirm the wall and fasteners can support at least the capacity required by the manual. Secura requires the wall to support five times the combined weight of the TV and mount. This is a structural requirement, not a suggestion to use a five-times-heavier TV.
VESA pattern Measure the horizontal and vertical hole spacing on the TV and compare it with the bracket range. A bracket that does not reach every VESA hole cannot distribute the load correctly.
Stud type and spacing Verify wood studs, their center-to-center distance, and whether the model accepts that distance. Some manuals describe nominal 2×4 studs and up to 16 inches (406 mm) spacing; those are not universal limits.
Drywall thickness Check the maximum drywall covering stated by the manufacturer. Several cited instructions allow up to 5/8 inch (16 mm) of drywall over the stud. Thicker finishes may require different hardware or a different location.
Movement range Check extension, swivel, tilt, and the location of the arm when fully extended. For example, SANUS lists its VLF628 for 46- to 90-inch TVs, 30° of swivel in each direction, and 28 inches of extension. Those specifications apply to that model only.

Also check the wall for damage, loose plaster, metal studs, furring strips, or a hollow chase. If the construction does not match the manual’s wood-stud assumptions, stop and obtain model-specific advice.

Tools and materials

  • The mount’s wall template or wall plate, lag screws, washers, TV bolts, spacers, and any locking parts supplied in the box.
  • A stud finder, plus an awl or small nail for physical verification.
  • A tape measure, pencil, and a reliable level long enough to span the wall plate.
  • A drill and the wood pilot bit specified in the manual. Philips specifies a 3 mm (1/8-inch) bit for the SQM9222; other cited manuals specify 7/32 inch, so neither size should be treated as universal.
  • A socket wrench or driver that fits the supplied lag-screw heads, and a screwdriver for the TV brackets.
  • A helper who can hold the television while you engage the arm’s hooks or safety tab.
  • A cable path plan that leaves enough slack for the arm’s full extension and swivel.

Do not use a power tool on the TV’s threaded inserts. Excess torque can strip the inserts or crush the panel. Keep the manufacturer’s hardware separated by step so a similar-looking screw is not installed in the wrong hole.

Choose the height and inspect the wall

Plan viewing height and clearances

Have someone hold a cardboard rectangle the size of the screen at the proposed location. Check the primary viewer’s eye level while seated, the location of windows and lights, and clearance for the arm when it swings. Leave room behind the set for cables and ventilation. Amazon’s installation guidance also advises avoiding water or moisture and considering user eye level.

Scan for hidden services

Before drilling, inspect both sides of the wall if accessible and use an appropriate detector for electrical wiring and plumbing. Amazon explicitly warns not to drill over either. A stud finder is not a guarantee that a void is safe; turn off power to circuits near the work area when practical and stop if you encounter unexpected resistance, a metal plate, or a pipe-like sound.

Find and verify the stud centers

Use the detector to locate each stud

  1. Run the stud finder slowly across the proposed mounting zone, following its calibration instructions.
  2. Mark the point where the device first indicates the stud edge, then continue until the indication disappears and mark the opposite edge.
  3. Repeat from the other direction. A broad or inconsistent reading can indicate corner framing, doubled studs, pipes, or electrical components rather than a normal center.

Confirm with a physical probe

Philips instructs the installer to mark both edges and drill at the center. Use an awl or a very small nail in a location that will be hidden by the plate. Probe only shallowly, with the drill area already checked for services. Solid wood resistance should begin after the drywall; a sudden empty feel means you may be between studs or over a cavity. Mark the centerline halfway between the two verified edges. Repeat for the second stud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the center-to-center distance and compare it with the mount’s approved range. A nominal 16-inch (406 mm) layout is common, but framing can be 24 inches on center or use metric spacing. The manual, not a construction convention, determines whether the plate can span the studs.

Install the wall plate into wood studs

1. Level and mark the plate

  1. Hold the template or wall plate at the chosen height with its mounting holes over the verified stud centers.
  2. Place the level on the plate and adjust until the bubble is centered. Do not level from a nearby ceiling, cabinet, or trim piece that may itself be out of square.
  3. Mark every required hole that lands in the stud. If one of the mount’s required holes misses the stud, do not move it a few millimeters and hope the screw still holds; resolve the framing issue first.

2. Drill the pilot holes

  1. Fit the model-specified wood bit. The Philips SQM9222 instruction calls for 3 mm (1/8 inch); other cited instructions call for 7/32 inch.
  2. Drill straight into the marked stud centers to the diameter and depth stated in the manual. Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall so the lag screw seats squarely.
  3. Clear dust from the holes without enlarging them. An oversized or angled pilot hole reduces the screw’s grip.

3. Fasten the plate

  1. Place the wall plate over the pilot holes and insert the supplied lag screws with their specified washers.
  2. Start each screw by hand for several turns so the threads do not cross-start. Tighten with a socket wrench until the washer and screw head are firmly seated against the plate.
  3. Do not over-tighten. The cited manuals warn that excessive torque can damage the wall or reduce holding power. Stop when the plate is clamped securely and the screw head is seated as directed.
  4. Recheck the level after all screws are snug. If the plate shifted, loosen, realign, and retighten rather than bending the bracket.

A plate that rocks, leaves a gap, or spins a lag screw without resistance is not ready for the TV. Remove it and diagnose the hole before proceeding.

Attach the TV brackets and hang the television

Fit the brackets to the VESA holes

  1. Lay the screen face down on a clean, padded surface only if the television manufacturer permits it. Keep pressure off the panel.
  2. Align the vertical rails or brackets with all four VESA holes. Select the correct screw length from the mount kit; add the supplied spacers when the back is recessed or obstructed.
  3. Thread each screw by hand first. If it bottoms out before the bracket is tight, it is too long; if it engages only a few turns, it may be too short. Use the manual’s combination rather than improvising.
  4. Tighten with a hand screwdriver. Do not use a power driver on the television fasteners.

Lift, lock, and test

  1. With a helper, lift the TV to the arm or wall plate and engage every hook, rail, or latch in the order shown by the manual.
  2. Close the safety tab or locking mechanism. Pull gently upward and outward on the frame to confirm that the set cannot lift off the mount.
  3. Adjust tilt and tension only after the TV is locked. Keep fingers clear of pinch points around the arm joints.
  4. Move the screen slowly through its intended swivel and extension range while watching the wall plate and screws. The plate should remain flush and motion should come from the mount joints, not from the wall.

Route cables for movement

Connect cables with the arm in a neutral position, then leave a gentle service loop. Extend and swivel the TV again to ensure no cable is pulled tight, crushed against the wall, or bent beyond its rated radius. Secure cables to the arm only with the mount’s recommended clips or soft ties; do not strap them so tightly that movement is restricted.

What to do when the studs do not line up

Do not substitute ordinary drywall anchors

Toggle bolts, plastic plugs, and self-drilling drywall anchors are not replacements for the structural lag screws specified for the cited full-motion mounts. They may be suitable for a light accessory, but the outward leverage of a moving TV can pull them through the gypsum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an approved adapter or reinforcement

If the plate cannot span your framing, options include relocating the mount, installing a reinforcement board that is itself fastened into adequate studs, or using a manufacturer-approved stud adapter. Vogel’s describes the TVA 6950 adapter for hollow walls and lists compatible 16-, 20-, and 24-inch and 450- and 600-mm stud distances. Compatibility with the television, mount, wall covering, and fasteners must still be confirmed.

A reinforcement board is only as strong as its connections. It must be thick and wide enough for the selected plate, fastened into the required number of sound studs with appropriate structural screws, and installed without crushing the drywall. For a heavy television, unusual framing, a damaged wall, or uncertainty about the load path, professional assessment is safer than trial and error. Amazon’s guidance recommends professional installation when standard stud spacing is unavailable.

When a 24-inch layout is acceptable

Some mounts provide holes or adapters for 24-inch studs; others are limited to 16 inches. Measure the actual centers rather than assuming the building’s nominal layout, then check the model’s drilling diagram. If the plate has only one usable stud, do not place the second lag screw into drywall merely to fill a hole.

Drywall thickness, plaster, and unusual walls

Measure the covering where the plate will sit. The cited examples allow up to 5/8 inch (16 mm) of drywall over nominal 2×4 wood studs, but a layer of plaster, tile, furring, or a second sheet can exceed that limit. Longer screws are not automatically safer: the thread length, washer, plate thickness, and stud penetration must match the manufacturer’s specification.

Metal studs, steel track, masonry veneer, and hollow block require a different engineering approach. Do not drill into a metal stud with the wood-stud procedure or assume a hollow-wall anchor has the same capacity as a wood lag screw. Follow the exact mount manual or consult an installer familiar with the wall construction.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Masonry is a separate installation

Solid concrete and concrete block use masonry bits and anchors selected for the mount and the wall. The cited manuals require the wall plate to bear on the concrete surface rather than on a weak covering. Hole diameter, embedment depth, edge distance, and anchor type all change. This drywall-and-studs procedure should not be reused for masonry without following the model’s masonry section.

Troubleshooting before and after mounting

The stud finder shows a wide or shifting signal

Recalibrate on a clear section of wall, scan in both directions, and verify the edges with an awl. Avoid scanning directly over outlets, switches, plumbing fixtures, or metal corner bead. If the physical probe does not find wood at the marked center, do not drill the lag hole there.

The pilot bit stops immediately

You may have hit a protective metal plate over wiring or plumbing, a steel stud, or masonry. Stop drilling. Do not force the bit or move the hole by a small amount until the obstruction is identified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lag screw spins or will not tighten

The hole may be between studs, oversized, too shallow for the screw, or drilled into damaged wood. Remove the plate, inspect the hole, and remount only at a verified center with the correct pilot size. A spinning screw is not evidence of adequate holding power.

The plate is level but the TV tilts

Check that every VESA bracket screw is in the correct hole and that the arm’s tilt adjustment is locked. A level plate cannot correct a bracket installed upside down, on mismatched spacers, or with one screw omitted.

The mount pulls away when extended

Unload the television immediately and inspect all lag screws, the plate, and the stud material. Any gap, crushed drywall, cracking, or movement means the installation has failed. Do not compensate by tightening harder; identify the structural problem, replace damaged hardware or material as appropriate, and obtain professional help when the wall or mount is compromised.

Cables bind during swivel

Power the TV off, return the arm to neutral, and reroute with a larger loop. Test at maximum extension and at both swivel limits. A cable that becomes taut can apply force to the connectors and can also limit the arm unexpectedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare full-motion mounts and tools

When choosing among products, compare the complete installation envelope rather than screen size alone.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Load rating What is the maximum TV weight, and does the manual state a wall-capacity factor such as five times the combined TV and mount weight?
VESA range Does the bracket reach the TV’s measured horizontal and vertical hole spacing, including recessed patterns?
Stud compatibility Which stud types, center distances, and drywall-covering thicknesses are approved?
Motion How far does the arm extend, how many degrees does it swivel each way, and are those figures limited by the screen size or wall clearance?
Locking and adjustment Is there a positive safety tab, and can tilt and tension be adjusted without loosening structural fasteners?
Hardware Are the required lag screws, washers, TV bolts, spacers, and masonry hardware included and clearly identified?
Nonstandard framing Is there a compatible stud adapter or reinforcement option for 20- or 24-inch spacing and hollow walls?

For tools, prioritize a stud detector that can be physically verified, a level that remains accurate across its length, and a wood-bit set containing the exact diameter specified by the chosen manual. A tool that is convenient but incompatible with the supplied fasteners does not improve the installation.

Final safety inspection

  • The TV weight, VESA pattern, stud spacing, drywall thickness, and mount rating match the manual.
  • Both stud edges were located and each structural hole is centered in sound wood.
  • No electrical wiring or plumbing is in the drilling path.
  • The pilot holes match the specified diameter and depth.
  • Every supplied lag screw and washer is installed and firmly seated without over-tightening.
  • The wall plate is level, flush, and does not move when the arm is operated.
  • All TV bracket screws use the correct length, spacers, and hand-tightening method.
  • The safety tab or lock is engaged and the TV remains attached during a gentle lift check.
  • Cables have enough slack for the full rated extension and swivel.
  • The screen moves smoothly without wall cracking, plate flex, unusual noises, or cable tension.
