To request a signature that can be completed and tracked, open a Google Doc on a computer and choose Tools > eSignature. Google prepares a PDF signing request with signature fields and an audit trail. If you only want a signature image displayed on the page, that is a different task: use an image rather than the eSignature workflow.
Choose the kind of signature you need
| Goal | Use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Have one or more people sign a document | Google’s eSignature workflow, if the account is eligible | A signing request and, after completion, a PDF with an audit-trail page. Google Docs Editors Help |
| Show a signature visually on a page without requesting a signature | Insert an image of the signature into the document | A visual mark in the document; it is not the eSignature request workflow. |
Google describes its eSignature feature as a way to sign and request signatures within Google Docs and Drive. Its documentation does not determine whether a particular signature method satisfies the legal, compliance, or organizational requirements for every transaction. Check the requirements that apply to your document before sending it. Google Workspace’s eSignature overview

How to request an eSignature in Google Docs
- Open the document on a computer. Use an existing Google Doc or create one. Google also documents starting an eSignature request from a PDF in Drive using that file’s menu. See Google’s request and signing instructions.
- Choose Tools > eSignature. This opens the eSignature panel. If the option is missing, check your Workspace edition and, for an organizational account, whether an administrator has enabled the feature.
- Add the signer and fields. Select a signer, then place the signature field and any needed initials or other available fields in the document. Google permits up to 10 signers and 200 fields of any type in one document.
- Send the request. Select Request signature, name the generated PDF, enter each signer’s email address, and send it. Editors who have edit access can find the request button.
- Sign from the email invitation. The signer opens the link, completes requested text fields, selects the signature field, then types their name in Google’s standard signature style or draws a signature with a mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen. A stylus is optional.
- Retrieve the completed PDF. After all signers have signed, the parties can access the final PDF. It includes an audit-trail page recording request lifecycle events and identifying details. Where the file is saved depends on folder access and sharing rules.
Who can use Google’s eSignature feature?
Google’s eligibility page lists Workspace Individual, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Essentials Plus, and Education Plus. Organizational editions on that list require an administrator to enable the feature. Eligibility can change, so consult Google’s current eSignature access page if your edition is not listed or the controls differ.

If eSignature is missing or signing will not work
- The Tools menu has no eSignature option: Confirm that the account is on an eligible edition. For an organizational account, ask the Workspace administrator whether eSignature is enabled. After an account upgrade, Google says the menu may take a few minutes to appear; refresh the document.
- The signer cannot draw: Google recommends updating the browser. A mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen can be used; a stylus is not required.
- A request has more than one signer: The request is not complete until every signer has signed. Google allows up to 10 signers and 200 fields total per document.
- You are checking for reminders: If automatic reminders are enabled, Google says they begin 3 days (72 hours) after the first request and repeat every 3 days for up to 9 days or until signing is complete.
For account-specific access or interface changes, check Google’s eligibility guidance and step-by-step help.

When a visual signature is enough
If your goal is only to display a signature on the page—for example, on a draft or informal note—insert an image of the signature into the Doc. That places a visual mark in the document but does not create Google’s managed signing request or its documented completed-PDF audit trail. Do not assume an image or typed name meets the requirements for a formal transaction.
