The most effective way to carry more Metal Scraps in Enshrouded is to equip the highest-tier backpack you have unlocked in the Backpack Extension slot on the Character screen. A backpack is an inventory extension, not a stackable bonus: only one can be equipped at a time. Pair the largest available backpack with a repeatable trip to Scavengers or destroyed metal objects, then unload your haul into chests at your base before starting the next loop.
The Official Enshrouded Wiki lists 24 carried-inventory slots without a backpack and a maximum of 56 with a Large Backpack. The same reference was accessed in 2026; individual values can change if a game update changes inventory equipment.

Backpacks are equipable items that increase the number of inventory slots used to store items on your person when equipped in the Backpack Extension slot on the Character screen. The extension is separate from your ordinary equipment, so the practical first step is opening the character interface and checking whether a backpack is already equipped.
Backpack bonuses do not combine. Equipping a Medium Backpack and a Small Backpack does not add both bonuses; the game uses the single backpack placed in the Backpack Extension slot. Replace an older backpack with the best tier you currently possess rather than carrying several and expecting extra capacity.

The Official Enshrouded Wiki lists the following progression. The bonus is added to the default carried inventory, so the listed maximum with the Large tier is 56 slots.

These totals are simple slot counts, not a guarantee that every slot will hold the same amount of scrap. Items occupy inventory slots according to the game’s own stacking rules, so the useful capacity of a trip depends on what else you carry and whether your existing Metal Scrap stacks have room.

Which backpack should you use?
Use the highest tier you can equip
For a dedicated scrap run, the decision is straightforward: equip the highest tier available before leaving your base. The Large Backpack gives the biggest listed extension. If that tier is not yet available, use the Medium, Small, or Tiny tier rather than farming with the unexpanded inventory.
Understand the progression bonuses
The tiers add 8, 16, 24, and 32 slots respectively. Because each tier is a replacement for the previous one, the relevant comparison is the difference between the two items in your possession. Upgrading from Tiny to Small adds another 8 slots; upgrading from Small to Medium adds another 8; upgrading from Medium to Large adds another 8.
Do not discard an older backpack until you have confirmed that the new one is equipped. Open the Character screen after crafting or acquiring an upgrade and verify the item appears in the Backpack Extension slot. If the slot is empty, your carried capacity has not increased.
How to craft the Large Backpack
The Large Backpack is crafted by the Bard or Bard Assistant. The listed recipe is 5 Leather and 5 Linen. Leather must be unlocked before the Large Backpack recipe is available, so reaching the required character progression alone may not be enough.

- Unlock Leather if the Large Backpack recipe is still unavailable.
- Open the Bard’s crafting interface and select the Large Backpack.
- Supply 5 Leather and 5 Linen, then craft the backpack.
- Open the Character screen and place the finished item in the Backpack Extension slot.
The source reference does not establish separate material recipes for the Tiny, Small, or Medium tiers. If you have not unlocked Leather or cannot yet craft the Large tier, use whichever lower tier is already available in your game and upgrade when its recipe becomes accessible.
Where to farm Metal Scraps
Scavengers around Rookmore
The Official Enshrouded Wiki identifies Scavengers around Rookmore as a good early-game source of Metal Scraps. This makes the area a practical starting route for characters who need scrap before they have the resources or progression for the largest backpack and more elaborate storage setup.
A Rookmore loop is most useful when the area is reasonably close to your base. The shorter the return trip, the sooner you can deposit a nearly full load and begin another run. The reference does not provide a measured scraps-per-minute rate, so treat Rookmore as a recommended early source rather than a proven numeric efficiency record.
Destroyed metal objects
Destroyed metal objects are another direct source. When you encounter them during exploration, break them and collect the resulting materials. A route that passes several such objects can supplement Scavenger drops without requiring a separate detour.
Physical world pickups
Metal Scraps also appear as physical pickups in the world. Collect them while moving through an area you already visit for Scavengers or destroyed objects. Pickups are especially useful for filling otherwise unused space on the return leg, but they should not tempt you to carry unrelated materials until your inventory is full of the items you actually came to farm.
Step-by-step Metal Scrap farming workflow
- Prepare at the base. Deposit unrelated materials, repair or replace equipment as needed, and leave open inventory slots for scrap. The backpack increases slot count, but it cannot create room if existing stacks and equipment already occupy the inventory.
- Equip the best backpack. Open the Character screen and place your highest available tier in the Backpack Extension slot. Confirm that the item is active before leaving. A spare backpack in another inventory slot does not extend capacity.
- Check the Large recipe. If you have access to the Bard or Bard Assistant and have unlocked Leather, craft the Large Backpack from 5 Leather and 5 Linen. Otherwise, equip the best lower tier you own.
- Choose a source area. Early in the game, use Scavengers around Rookmore. On an exploration route, prioritize destroyed metal objects and world pickups that lie along your path.
- Keep scrap as the trip’s priority. When a slot becomes available, collect Metal Scrap rather than filling it with low-priority materials. This is inventory management, not a claim that other items are worthless; it simply protects the purpose of the run.
- Watch the remaining space. When the inventory is nearing full, stop extending the route. Continuing deeper into an area can force you to leave scrap behind or replace it with less relevant loot.
- Return before capacity is exhausted. Travel back while you still have enough room to collect any final scraps on the way out. Waiting until every slot is occupied makes the last pickups harder to manage.
- Unload at storage. Deposit Metal Scrap stacks into a chest at your base. Separate the deposit from ordinary building materials if that makes the next farming loop easier to organize.
- Repeat the same loop. Once the backpack is empty, start the route again. A consistent short loop is easier to optimize than an improvised trip that mixes several distant objectives.
How to plan a carrying run
Use three factors when comparing possible routes: distance from your base, concentration of Scavengers, and the number of destroyed metal objects available without a detour. A route with more targets is not automatically better if the return journey consumes so much time that you could have completed two shorter trips.

Early-game route
For an early character, begin with Scavengers around Rookmore and collect nearby destroyed metal objects and physical pickups. The Tiny or Small Backpack may be all that is available, so plan shorter loops and return to base more often.
Backpack-upgrade route
After unlocking Leather and obtaining the Bard or Bard Assistant, make the Large Backpack a preparation goal. Gather the five Leather and five Linen required for the recipe, craft it, and equip it before committing to long scrap runs. The upgrade is most valuable when your route regularly fills the existing inventory.

Mixed exploration route
If you are already traveling between objectives, collect scrap from Scavengers, destroyed metal objects, and world pickups encountered on that route. Keep enough open space for the material you intend to bring home; otherwise, the extra stops can displace the scrap you planned to collect.
Storage chests: turning capacity into a repeatable system
Backpack space only helps while you are away from home. Storage chests let you unload Metal Scrap so the next trip begins with an empty carried inventory. Place a chest where you can reach it immediately after returning from your route, and deposit stacks before crafting, building, or leaving again.
The storage reference lists examples ranging from a Tiny Chest with 16 slots to an Enormous Magic Chest with 72 slots:

The storage page carries a “This Page Needs Attention” warning and says magic-chest ranges have been reported to have changed, with testing needed for new data. Treat the 72-slot figure as a value reported by that reference, not an immutable guarantee for every current game version. Check the chest’s actual capacity in your installation after updates.

Organize for fast deposits
Use one clearly identified chest, or a small group of chests, for Metal Scraps. The exact number of chests you need depends on how often you farm and how much base construction consumes. A dedicated location prevents a full general-purpose chest from forcing you to sort materials before every trip.
Do not confuse backpack and chest limits
A larger chest does not increase what you can carry in the field, and a larger backpack does not expand base storage. The two upgrades solve different bottlenecks: the backpack reduces return frequency, while chests let you preserve each load and continue farming without discarding material.

The default carried inventory is 24 slots. The backpack tier adds its listed bonus, producing totals of 32, 40, 48, or 56 slots for Tiny through Large. Use the total shown on the Character screen as your practical ceiling, then subtract slots occupied by tools, equipment, consumables, quest items, and unrelated loot.
For example, a Large Backpack gives the largest listed field inventory, but a character carrying many non-scrap items may have far fewer than 56 slots available for Metal Scrap. Before a farming trip, move nonessential materials into base storage. This creates usable scrap capacity without any additional recipe or equipment.
Because the supplied references do not specify a universal Metal Scrap stack size, do not convert slot capacity into a claimed number of scraps. Count the occupied scrap stacks in your own game and return when the remaining free slots no longer support the route’s likely pickups.
Common mistakes and fixes
The backpack was crafted but capacity did not change
Open the Character screen and inspect the Backpack Extension slot. Crafting an item does not equip it automatically in every situation. Move the backpack into that slot and verify the inventory display again.
Two backpacks do not increase capacity twice
Only one backpack is used at a time. Remove the lower tier from the extension slot before placing the higher tier there, and store the spare item rather than expecting a second bonus.

Confirm both prerequisites: access to the Bard or Bard Assistant and the Leather unlock. The listed Large recipe requires 5 Leather and 5 Linen; having only the materials does not bypass an unavailable recipe.
The trip fills with unrelated loot
Empty the inventory before leaving, then make Metal Scrap the priority for open slots. If you are exploring, return to base or use a nearby storage point when the inventory begins to fill instead of allowing miscellaneous items to consume every remaining slot.
A chest holds a different number of slots after an update
Inspect the chest in your current game version. The storage reference specifically warns that magic-chest ranges may have changed, so its published values should be treated as version-sensitive. Do not plan a large stockpile around an old number without checking the actual interface.
The route feels slow despite a large backpack
A larger inventory reduces return frequency but does not increase the number of Scavengers, destroyed objects, or pickups on a route. Reassess the distance to base and the density of available targets. The cited material provides no measured scraps-per-minute statistic, so compare routes by your own travel time and the amount collected rather than relying on an unsupported efficiency claim.

- Equip any backpack you already own; leaving the Backpack Extension slot empty wastes the easiest capacity increase.
- Move from Tiny to Small, Medium, and Large as each tier becomes available, remembering that the bonuses replace rather than stack.
- Prioritize the Leather unlock and the Bard or Bard Assistant when you are ready to craft the Large Backpack.
- Reserve 5 Leather and 5 Linen for the Large recipe once those materials are available.
- Establish a chest near your return point so every completed trip converts field capacity into stored Metal Scrap.
- Only then lengthen the route toward additional destroyed metal objects or pickups; a longer route is useful when it produces more scrap without overwhelming your carrying and storage workflow.
What the largest backpack changes—and what it does not
The Large Backpack is the highest tier listed in the cited reference and provides the greatest number of additional inventory slots. It lets you stay away from base longer before unloading, which is valuable when Scavengers or metal objects are spread across a route. It does not change Metal Scrap drop behavior, create new sources, increase chest capacity, or provide a measured farming-rate improvement.
For that reason, the strongest setup is a combination rather than a single item: equip the largest backpack you can craft, choose a route with nearby Scavengers or multiple destroyed metal objects, collect world pickups encountered along the way, and maintain enough chest space to deposit every load. This approach addresses the two separate limits that slow scrap farming: the number of slots on your character and the amount of material you can retain at your base.
