What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First decide whether you need more free space on C: or a larger C: partition. Windows’ built-in cleanup tools and moving files can free space inside the existing volume. Making the partition larger is a separate disk-management task that depends on your PC’s partition layout.
Check what “increase C drive space” means
Open File Explorer > This PC and check the available space on C:. Microsoft warns that low storage can affect performance and make Windows updates difficult (Microsoft: Free up drive space in Windows).

Freeing space removes or relocates data while keeping the C: volume the same size. Resizing changes the capacity assigned to that partition. Try cleanup or file moves first if your immediate problem is low free space.
Free space with Windows’ cleanup tools
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations and review the suggested categories, which can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
- Select only items you recognize and are willing to remove, then confirm the cleanup.
- To automate eligible cleanup, configure Storage Sense on the Storage page. Check its settings: what it removes and when depends on your selections.
Microsoft describes Storage Sense as a way to automatically remove eligible items, including temporary files and some Recycle Bin content (Microsoft: Manage drive space with Storage Sense).
#1 Best Overall
- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
Pay particular attention to Previous Windows installation(s) if it appears in cleanup options. Deleting the previous installation removes the Windows.old files that provide the option to go back to the prior Windows version. Keep them if you may need that rollback option (Microsoft: Free up drive space in Windows).
Move personal files and choose where new content is saved
- Review large personal files in folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads.
- Move files you want to keep to another suitable location, such as an external drive. Verify the files are accessible there before removing any remaining copy from C:.
- For future content, choose another available drive as the save location where Windows offers that option. This changes where new content is stored; it does not resize C:.
Files stored on an external drive are available only while that drive is connected. Microsoft also notes that Windows may allow external storage to temporarily provide space needed to complete an update; this is not a permanent expansion of the C: partition (Microsoft: Free up space for Windows updates).

Choose an approach based on what changes
| Approach | What changes | Hardware or layout needs | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations | Frees space within the existing C: volume | No new hardware | Review deletions; removing the previous Windows installation removes the rollback files. |
| Move files or change save locations | Stores personal or future content somewhere other than C: | Another suitable storage location; an external drive must be connected to access files on it | Moving files does not increase C: partition capacity. |
| Resize the C: partition | Changes the capacity assigned to the volume | A suitable disk layout and careful handling of partitions | The right procedure depends on the actual layout; do not guess which partitions can be changed. |
Before resizing C:, inspect the disk layout
Windows includes Disk Management, which Microsoft says can help manage disks and volumes, including shrinking and extending volumes (Microsoft: Disk Management in Windows). Open it by right-clicking Start and choosing Disk Management, or by pressing Win + R, entering diskmgmt.msc, and pressing Enter.
Use the view to identify the disks and partitions before making changes. Do not proceed if you cannot tell which entries are the Windows volume, recovery partition, or system and boot partitions. Back up important data first. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance concerns servicing the recovery environment, not a general C: expansion procedure; it warns that custom layouts affect partition work and cautions against modifying critical system or boot partitions (Microsoft Learn: Deploy Windows RE).

Disk Management’s ability to extend volumes does not by itself establish a safe, universal sequence for enlarging C:. If the layout is unclear or the operation would involve recovery, system, or boot partitions, stop rather than experimenting. The information here does not provide a click-by-click resizing procedure for every Windows 11 PC.
