Where to change Xbox privacy settings
You can manage Xbox privacy settings on the web or from the console. Microsoft’s Xbox privacy and safety settings page is the direct web destination. Families can manage their Microsoft family group at account.microsoft.com/family.

For a child account, sign in as the parent who manages the Microsoft family group, then review the child’s Xbox privacy and online-safety permissions. A child’s own account is not the place to manage family restrictions.

Online safety is not one switch. Microsoft provides separate controls for activities such as multiplayer, clubs, broadcasting gameplay, adding friends, and chatting. Set each permission to fit the child’s age, maturity, and your family’s expectations. Allowing multiplayer does not necessarily allow every communication feature.

- Multiplayer: Decide whether the account can join multiplayer games.
- Clubs: Choose whether the player can create or join clubs.
- Broadcasting: Decide whether gameplay can be broadcast.
- Friends: Review whether the player can add friends.
- Communication: Set chatting and contact permissions separately from multiplayer access.
Set screen-time limits with Microsoft Family Safety
Use Microsoft Family Safety for Xbox screen-time limits and related family controls. An organizer can manage time limits online at family.microsoft.com or in the Microsoft Family Safety app.
- Open Family Safety online or in the app and select the family member.
- Select the Xbox platform tab.
- Set the allowed time for each day and the permitted time range.
Xbox screen time continues to count while the player remains signed in, even if the console is not actively being used. Include signing out in the household routine when play is finished.

Manage age-rated content and purchases
Family controls also cover content filters and purchase limits. Review age-rated content for the child’s account separately from social permissions, and decide whether purchases should require approval.

Require approval for Xbox purchases
On the console, open the purchase-approval setting through this route: press the Xbox button, then select Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download. Turn on Ask a parent. Console labels can change, so check the current menu if the route differs.

Review app privacy separately
Xbox app privacy is a distinct settings area from the account’s broader Xbox privacy controls. Microsoft provides an Xbox app privacy support page, but its current instructions may not be available in readable form. Check the app or console’s current settings labels rather than relying on an assumed menu path.

A practical review checklist
- Confirm that the correct child account is selected in the Microsoft family group.
- Review multiplayer, clubs, broadcasts, friend-adding, and chat permissions individually.
- Set age-appropriate content filters and purchase approval.
- Configure allowed Xbox time by day and time range in Family Safety.
- Review app privacy independently, and have the player sign out when finished.
