Bitcoin uses proof of work and has a protocol-defined limit of 21 million BTC. Ethereum uses proof of stake, and ether (ETH) has no fixed maximum supply: issuance to validators and the burning of transaction fees jointly affect its net supply. Both assets are speculative and volatile. Available evidence does not support a blanket claim that one is always riskier or more volatile than the other.
What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?
The key distinction is the networks’ intended roles. Bitcoin’s original design describes a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. Ethereum is built to run smart contracts—programs that execute on its blockchain—and decentralized applications. ETH is Ethereum’s native asset, used to pay network fees and participate in proof of stake.

| Question | Bitcoin | Ethereum and ether (ETH) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Peer-to-peer digital currency and transfers, as described in Satoshi Nakamoto’s 2008 Bitcoin paper and Ethereum.org’s comparison. | Programmable blockchain for smart contracts and applications; ETH is the network’s native asset, according to Ethereum.org’s comparison. |
| Consensus | Proof of work: miners perform computational work to compete to add blocks, according to Ethereum.org’s comparison. | Proof of stake: validators stake ETH to participate in proposing and confirming blocks; protocol penalties can apply for misconduct. Ethereum switched from proof of work in September 2022, according to Ethereum.org. |
| Supply mechanics | Predetermined issuance schedule with an eventual protocol limit of 21 million BTC, as summarized by Ethereum.org. | No fixed maximum supply in the cited Ethereum documentation. ETH is issued to validators, while the base transaction fee is burned; net supply can rise or fall with staking participation and transaction activity. |
| Price-risk evidence | The SEC’s September 9, 2024 investor bulletin describes bitcoin as highly speculative and volatile. | The same SEC bulletin describes ether as highly speculative and volatile. It does not establish a universal volatility ranking between the assets. |
These are differences in network design and asset mechanics, not evidence that either asset will deliver better returns. A network’s capabilities do not establish the future price of its token.

For someone making a transfer, both networks can move value, but Ethereum also supports transactions that interact with smart contracts and applications. Those added capabilities are a difference in what the network can do; they are not a guarantee that an application will work as intended or that ETH will rise in value. Bitcoin’s design is more narrowly centered on peer-to-peer digital currency and transfers.

Using either asset directly generally means holding it through a platform or wallet and taking care with access credentials. When a person controls a wallet’s private keys, losing them or approving an unsafe transaction can cause losses distinct from a market-price decline. The SEC’s September 2024 bulletin discusses these platform, wallet, and key-handling risks.
Is Bitcoin or Ethereum riskier?
There is no evidence here for a categorical answer. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy said in its September 9, 2024 investor bulletin that “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative.” Their prices can fluctuate widely, so either can lose substantial value. The cited source does not say that one is always riskier or more volatile.

“Riskier” can mean different things. A fair comparison needs to specify whether it means price swings, the chance of a permanent loss, network or application risks, or the operational burden of holding the asset. Network purpose alone does not answer those questions. A numerical volatility comparison would also need a matched period, currency, price source, return frequency, and volatility measure; without those, a ranking can mislead.
Market risk
Both assets are speculative rather than stable-value holdings. The SEC’s warning applies to both, and neither a supply design nor a network’s usefulness guarantees a particular market price or investment outcome.

Network and design trade-offs
Ethereum’s proof-of-stake design uses less energy than proof of work, according to Ethereum.org, but Ethereum.org also describes proof of stake as younger and less battle-tested than proof of work. That is a design trade-off, not proof that one network is categorically safer. No single consensus mechanism removes all technical or operational risk.
Custody and transaction risk
Direct ownership puts responsibility for access and transactions on the holder or their chosen platform. A lost private key or unsafe transaction can create a different kind of loss from a falling market price. An ETP may avoid some personal wallet and key-management tasks, but it has its own product-specific risks.

Why does Ethereum have no fixed supply?
Ethereum’s cited documentation describes ETH as being issued to validators and the base transaction fee as being burned. Validator issuance depends on staking participation, while the amount burned changes with transaction activity. Because these forces vary, ETH’s net supply can increase or decrease; it does not follow a fixed maximum-supply schedule like Bitcoin’s eventual 21 million BTC limit. This explains the supply mechanism, but does not predict ETH’s price.
Does Ethereum use more energy than Bitcoin?
No. Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus uses less energy than Bitcoin’s proof-of-work approach, according to Ethereum.org’s proof-of-stake documentation. Bitcoin miners use computational work to compete to add blocks; Ethereum validators stake ETH to participate in block proposal and confirmation. The energy difference follows from these consensus designs. It does not, by itself, show which network is safer or a better investment.

How do direct holdings differ from Bitcoin or ether ETPs?
Direct ownership means holding the asset through a platform or wallet, with the associated custody and key-handling responsibilities. A spot ETP can provide price exposure without requiring an investor to manage a personal wallet, but it is not identical to holding the underlying asset. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 staff bulletin says spot bitcoin and ether ETPs hold the underlying asset and seek to track its price, while their share prices may deviate. It also identifies sponsor fees, custody, issuer, and underlying-market risks.
The bulletin describes these products in the United States as commodity trusts, not funds registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940—even when a product name or public description calls one an “ETF.” That is a U.S.-specific description in 2024 staff guidance, not a statement about every jurisdiction or a substitute for checking current product documents and local rules.
