Xbox Cloud Gaming runs a game on Microsoft’s remote servers and streams it to your device. Local console gaming runs the game on Xbox hardware in your home. Xbox Remote Play is a third option: it streams a game running on your own console to another device.
The practical choice depends on which games you want, what hardware you already have, your internet connection and how much you plan to play. Cloud Gaming can spare you a local installation and work on supported devices beyond an Xbox console, but it relies on a steady connection and has eligibility and monthly-hour limits. Local play needs an Xbox console and access to the game, but doesn’t depend on a continuous cloud-game stream.

How the three ways to play differ
| Option | Where the game runs | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Microsoft’s remote server infrastructure; video and audio are streamed to your device. | A supported device and region, an eligible game and access option, a compatible controller or supported touch controls, and an internet connection. |
| Local Xbox console gaming | Your Xbox console at home. | An Xbox console and local access to the game. |
| Xbox Remote Play | Your own Xbox console at home; gameplay is streamed from that console to another device. | An Xbox console, a supported client device and a network connection. |
Cloud Gaming and console gaming are not always separate device choices: Xbox consoles are among the devices that can access Cloud Gaming. The distinction is whether a particular game is running on Microsoft’s servers or on your own console. Microsoft explains the difference between server-side game streaming and Remote Play in its game streaming overview.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Supported device, region and game
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select LG, Samsung and VIDAA OS smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and select Meta Quest headsets. Availability depends on the device, region, game and access option, and can change over time. Check the Xbox Cloud Gaming page for current availability rather than assuming every title in a console library can be streamed.

Xbox says supported free-to-play games such as Fortnite can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. For most other cloud-playable games, Xbox lists Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, as well as a supported game and region. PC Game Pass does not include the cloud gaming benefit listed on Xbox’s current page.
Controller and connection
Xbox says a compatible controller is required, although select games offer Xbox touch controls. Control support is not identical across every game and device, so check the game’s requirements before relying on touch input or a particular controller.

Xbox’s FAQ gives 10 Mbps as the minimum download speed. It says best performance is achieved at 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs and tablets, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. These are Xbox’s guidance, not a guarantee: the company says performance also depends on connection quality, location, device and other factors. See the official Cloud Gaming FAQ for current setup guidance.

Network dependence and consistency
Cloud play continuously streams a game, so the network is part of the play experience. A connection that meets Xbox’s speed guidance may still perform differently depending on its quality, your location and device. Local console play does not rely on a live cloud-game stream, though online multiplayer and other connected features may still require internet access.

There is no basis here to say Cloud Gaming is always slower, less sharp or less reliable than local play—or that local play is always better under every condition. The outcome depends on the game, device, connection and play conditions; a universal latency, image-quality or frame-rate comparison would be misleading.
Installation, storage and portability
With Cloud Gaming, you can play an eligible title without installing it locally. That can be useful on a supported device with limited storage, or when you want to play away from your console. Local console gaming requires the console and local game access, but does not require the game to be streamed from Microsoft’s servers.

Cloud access does not make every game available everywhere. Check whether the specific title is cloud-playable in your region and on your device, and whether your access option covers it.

Cost and playtime
Cloud Gaming can avoid buying a console if you already have a suitable device, but that does not by itself make it cheaper. Most cloud-playable catalog games require an eligible Game Pass tier, while local console play requires Xbox hardware and local game access. Compare the costs and terms that apply to the games and amount of play you want; regional plan prices and console prices are not established here.

As of October 7, 2026, Xbox’s Cloud Gaming page displays monthly limits of 5 hours for Essential, 10 hours for Premium and 15 hours for Ultimate. It says hours do not stack across multiple eligible Game Pass subscriptions. The page notes that monthly cloud limits vary by plan, so check the current terms before subscribing or planning a long session.

In a September 3, 2026 announcement, Team Xbox said monthly cloud-hour limits would take effect beginning in November 2026: 5 hours for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate. These are announced future changes at the date of the announcement; check Xbox’s current terms to confirm whether they have taken effect or changed.
Team Xbox also said users would be able to buy additional hours through the Xbox Store after using their included allowance. It announced a planned option, beginning in November, to buy cloud playtime and stream eligible games they own without a Game Pass subscription. The announcement did not specify the price, eligible game list or full market availability. These details may have changed since the announcement.

It gave this rationale: “The cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer.” See the September 3 Xbox Wire announcement for the company’s stated plans.
Which option fits your situation?
- Consider Cloud Gaming if you already have a supported device, want to avoid a local installation, and the games you want are eligible in your region. Make sure the connection and controller or touch controls suit your setup, and check the plan’s current hour allowance.
- Consider local console play if you want to play on Xbox hardware at home without relying on a continuous cloud-game stream, or if a title you want is not available to stream. You will need a console and local access to the game.
- Consider Remote Play if you want to use another device to play games running on your own Xbox console. It is not the same as streaming from Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming servers.
Before deciding, check the exact game, device and region; compare the access cost and any monthly playtime cap; and consider whether you need to play away from home. Those factors matter more than assuming one method is universally faster, sharper or less expensive.
