Bitcoin investing involves more than choosing when to buy: you also need to understand price risk, network and service fees, tax consequences, and who controls the keys. A spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) can change how you hold exposure, but it does not remove bitcoin’s price risk. The tax guidance below is limited to U.S. federal rules.
Why is Bitcoin so volatile?
Bitcoin is a highly speculative investment, and its price can move sharply. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy warns that bitcoin is highly speculative and highlights price volatility as a risk, including for investors who buy an exchange-traded product. The SEC’s bulletin is dated September 9, 2024. It does not provide a comparable volatility statistic or a forecast, so a precise volatility figure or future price expectation would be misleading.

An ETP changes the route by which you get exposure; it does not insulate you from changes in bitcoin’s price. Consider whether you could tolerate losing some or all of the amount invested. SEC Investor.gov: Investor Bulletin on crypto asset ETPs.

There is no single fixed Bitcoin network fee. Fees vary with demand for space in the blockchain, and their size relates to transaction data size—not simply to how much bitcoin you send. A more complex transaction may take more space. Wallets may estimate a fee and let you review it before you authorize a transaction, but the amount can change with network conditions. Bitcoin.org explains this fee mechanism in its Bitcoin FAQ.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Keep the network fee separate from charges a service may impose. An exchange or custodian may have trading, spread, deposit, withdrawal, transfer, custody, setup, or closure fees. Check the provider’s current fee schedule and the wallet’s transaction details before proceeding; a quoted service fee is not the same thing as the Bitcoin network fee.
Do I pay taxes when I sell Bitcoin?
For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets such as bitcoin as property. When you sell bitcoin for U.S. dollars, you generally recognize a capital gain or loss, subject to limits on capital-loss deductions. The IRS describes the calculation as the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized. Amount realized generally includes cash and the fair-market value of services received, less transaction costs allocable to the disposition. The IRS includes fees, transfer taxes, and commissions paid for services that effect a purchase, sale, or disposition in its definition of transaction costs.

Is moving Bitcoin between my own wallets taxable?
Under current IRS FAQs, moving digital assets between wallets or accounts that both belong to the same taxpayer is generally not a taxable event. That treatment can change if bitcoin is used or withheld to pay a service for making the transfer. Keep transfer records and note any fee paid in bitcoin so you can determine what occurred and apply the relevant tax rules.

Should I keep Bitcoin on an exchange or use a hardware wallet?
A wallet does not hold bitcoin itself; it holds the private keys or passcodes that authorize transactions. A hardware wallet is generally a form of cold wallet: typically a physical device kept off the internet. That can reduce exposure to some online threats, but it does not make the bitcoin or device risk-free. A hot wallet is internet-connected and convenient, but more exposed to cyberthreats. A cold wallet can still be lost, damaged, or stolen.
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting them and maintaining recovery access. A recovery seed phrase may restore access; anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet. Store it securely and consider how you would recover access if the device were lost or damaged.

With third-party custody, the provider controls the keys, so you rely on its safeguards and continued operation. Before using a custodian, check its security practices, recovery procedures, privacy terms, fees, what happens if it fails, and whether assets are insured or may be used or rehypothecated. Insurance terms and coverage should be read carefully rather than assumed.

Is a Bitcoin ETF the same as owning Bitcoin?
No. A spot bitcoin ETP can provide exchange-traded exposure without requiring you to manage a crypto wallet or its keys directly. But owning ETP shares is not the same as holding bitcoin in a wallet: the product has its own structure, custody arrangements, sponsor fees, and other product risks. Its value remains exposed to bitcoin price movements.
SEC guidance notes that sponsor fees reduce the amount of bitcoin represented by an investor’s shares over time. Before investing, review the product’s current prospectus for its structure, sponsor fee, and custody arrangements, and check your brokerage’s costs. A direct bitcoin holding and an ETP also differ in whether you can transact on the Bitcoin network and who handles custody and recovery.
