One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your video doorbell or outdoor camera keeps disconnecting, loads slowly, or struggles to show live video, first check its Wi-Fi requirements and test the signal at the installed location. A weak signal is common, but incorrect network details, interference, power issues, router settings, or other devices using bandwidth can also be responsible.
1. Check your camera’s Wi-Fi requirements
Look up the exact model’s current setup guide for your region. Confirm which Wi-Fi bands it supports, along with any network security or setup requirements. Do not assume that every camera or doorbell works with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.

Requirements vary by product and region. SimpliSafe specifies 2.4 GHz for its wireless outdoor cameras. Google says certain Nest outdoor Wi-Fi products require 2.4 GHz in Canada and Europe, and warns against connecting a 2.4 GHz-only camera to a 5 GHz network. Check the instructions for your specific device before changing router settings.
For examples, see Google’s camera setup guidance, SimpliSafe’s outdoor camera error messages, and Google’s setup-message troubleshooting.

2. Confirm the network name and password
Make sure the camera is joining the intended Wi-Fi network and that you entered its network name (SSID) and password correctly. If you recently changed your Wi-Fi name or password, update the camera through the manufacturer’s supported app or setup process.
Some app-and-device combinations may require removing and setting up the camera again, or resetting it. Treat a reset as a later step, not the first one, and save any important video clips before proceeding. Google explains its supported options in instructions for changing a camera or doorbell’s Wi-Fi network.

- 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 - Please note that all Wireless Extenders are designed to improve WiFi coverage and not increase speeds. Actual speeds will be 50% or less from current speeds. However, improving signal reliability can boost overall performance
3. Test the connection where the camera is installed
Check the manufacturer’s app for connection or signal information, if available, and test live video at the camera’s actual mounting position. A successful setup beside the router does not show that the signal will remain strong through exterior walls or at the final location.

If practical, temporarily bring the camera closer to the router or access point. If its connection improves, that points to a coverage problem at the installed location. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal signal-strength threshold, so use the app’s own guidance rather than relying on a single number for every brand.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
4. Reduce distance, obstructions, and interference
Where it is practical, move the router or access point closer to the camera, or reduce obstructions between them. Walls, floors, furniture, appliances, and other electronics can weaken or interfere with a Wi-Fi connection. Even small placement changes may help, but results depend on the building and equipment.
TP-Link lists microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices, USB 3.0 devices, and baby monitors as possible sources of interference. Google also identifies electronics, furniture, appliances, walls, and floors as potential blockers. Keep the camera and network equipment away from likely interference sources where you can.

5. Check power, software, and household network use
After checking placement and network details, work through these basics:

- Power: Use the supplied power source when the manufacturer specifies one. TP-Link warns that third-party power supplies can cause instability for its devices.
- Restart: Restart the camera or doorbell using its supported method. If the problem involves a mesh system or extender, restart that equipment as appropriate; SimpliSafe includes restarting network equipment among its troubleshooting suggestions.
- Updates: Check for available camera firmware and app updates. TP-Link recommends keeping both current.
- Network load: If the camera’s problems occur while other household devices are using a lot of internet bandwidth, test again when that activity has stopped. Google notes that heavy use by other devices can affect camera connectivity.
These checks address different possible causes; a faster internet plan alone will not fix a camera that cannot maintain a usable Wi-Fi signal at its location.
6. Add coverage if the installed location remains weak
If temporarily moving the camera closer improves its connection but it must stay where it is, consider extending Wi-Fi coverage. A range extender or mesh system may help, but it must receive a usable connection from the existing network and provide coverage where the camera is installed. Check that the camera supports the network band and settings the equipment will use.
Use this decision guide to narrow the options:
| Option | Consider it when | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Range extender | You need to improve coverage in a particular weak area. | It must be placed where it can connect well to the existing network while also serving the camera’s location. |
| Mesh system | Several areas of the home need more consistent coverage, or you already use mesh equipment. | Placement, setup, and camera compatibility still matter; adding mesh equipment is not a guaranteed fix by itself. |
| Access point | You can configure home-network equipment and want to add coverage at a chosen location. | Setup can be more involved, and the available manufacturer guidance does not establish that it will outperform an extender or mesh system. |
These are product-category options, not tested recommendations for particular models. No universal winner or comparative performance figure is established by the cited guidance. TP-Link suggests a range extender or mesh network, and Google recommends strengthening the signal when moving the camera closer resolves the problem.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the camera still disconnects after you verify its supported Wi-Fi band, network details, power, software, and signal at the installed location, consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guide or support team. Include the exact model, region, router or mesh setup, and what happens when the camera is tested closer to the network equipment; these details can help distinguish a setup problem from a coverage or device issue.
