Improve a 24/7 streaming server’s storage performance by measuring it under realistic peak load, identifying whether storage is actually the bottleneck, and matching the drive and cache layout to the workload. Sequential reads of large video files may suit HDDs; latency-sensitive or random I/O may benefit from SSD or NVMe. Neither a drive type nor RAID level guarantees smooth playback: the drive, controller, filesystem, host, and network all matter.
What storage performance means for a streaming server
Streaming combines a server’s delivery of media segments with their simultaneous consumption by clients. The IETF’s RFC 9317 describes this across both live media and media on demand. A 24/7 service describes availability, not a special storage technology requirement.

For storage decisions, distinguish three measures: throughput (data transferred over time), latency (how long an operation takes), and IOPS (operations per second). Large, mostly sequential reads of video files stress storage differently from many small metadata operations, random reads, ingest writes, or transcoding. Measure the pattern your server actually performs rather than choosing hardware by label.

First determine whether storage is the bottleneck
Establish a peak-like baseline
Record a sufficiently long run under expected busy conditions, not just a short burst. Collect per-stream bitrate, concurrent streams, storage throughput, read latency, IOPS, CPU use, memory and cache behavior, and network use. Include stream starts and stalls if your delivery software exposes them.

Estimate the load storage must serve
Add the bitrates of simultaneous streams that are not being served from cache. Account for protocol or container overhead and any concurrent ingest or transcode writes. Compare that demand with measured sustainable storage and network capacity, leaving room for cache misses, spikes, maintenance, and rebuild activity. There is no universal headroom percentage for a server whose workload and availability target are unspecified.
Follow the whole data path
- If storage latency rises or throughput reaches its limit while CPU and network still have capacity, investigate drives, controller or bus, filesystem, queueing, and cache.
- If storage is relatively idle while the network is saturated, faster drives will not remove the delivery bottleneck.
- If CPU is saturated, the media software or processing path may be limiting service even when storage can keep up.
AWS’s Volume Gateway guidance illustrates why diagnosis should include CPU, RAM, cache and upload-disk throughput, and both network legs; those are service-specific examples, not a universal hardware prescription. Cloud filesystem services also distinguish baseline from burst performance, so a brief high result should not be mistaken for sustained capacity.

Separate RAM-cache results from physical-storage results
Repeated reads may come from the operating system’s page cache instead of the drive. Compare warm-cache results with a test that bypasses page cache when assessing underlying storage. NVIDIA’s benchmarking guidance discusses this issue in a GPUDirect Storage context: its measurement principle is useful, but it is not a general server configuration guide.

Choose storage for the access pattern
| Storage option | Where it can fit | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity HDDs | Large libraries with predominantly sequential reads and cost-per-capacity constraints. | Measure sustained throughput per drive and simultaneous-read performance at peak concurrency. Spindle contention and rebuilds can affect results. |
| SATA or SAS SSD | Workloads that need lower latency or more random I/O than HDDs. | Check sustained performance, interface and controller limits, write endurance for ingest or transcode writes, and thermal behavior. |
| NVMe SSD | Low-latency or high-throughput local storage, a cache layer, or an all-flash setup. | Check PCIe lane and topology limits, sustained rather than burst results, endurance, cooling, and the rest of the host path. Microsoft describes NVMe as offering higher IOPS and throughput and lower latency than supported drive types other than persistent memory in its Storage Spaces Direct documentation. |
| Flash cache plus HDD capacity | A library with a frequently reused hot set and a larger, less frequently accessed collection. | Measure cache hits and misses. A cache helps only to the extent it serves active reads; size it against the working set rather than a universal percentage. |
| Striped or RAID 10 arrangement | Parallel I/O when member-drive throughput is demonstrably limiting and the capacity and recovery trade-offs fit. | Validate throughput in the target server and account for usable capacity, failure tolerance, rebuild behavior, and recovery. RAID is not a backup. |
There is no independent universal benchmark in the available evidence that establishes one HDD, SSD, or NVMe configuration as best for every streaming server. Microsoft’s performance statements and cache examples apply to Storage Spaces Direct; AWS’s RAID 10 discussion concerns Storage Gateway. Use them as product-context guidance, not proof of a particular layout for your server.
Size cache from the hot working set
Identify which files are reused, how often they are requested, and what share of reads cache serves. If the cache is much smaller than the active set, it may churn; if the workload rarely repeats data, a larger cache may add cost without improving playback.

Microsoft suggests that Storage Spaces Direct cache accommodate the active working set. In that product context, it gives 10% of HDD capacity as a possible starting point (1.6 TB cache for 16 TB of HDD capacity) and about 5% for some all-flash deployments (1.5 TB cache for 28.8 TB of SSD capacity). These are platform-specific examples, not general rules for streaming servers. The same guidance says capacity above approximately 400 TB per server can lengthen resynchronization after downtime or reboot; that figure is specific to the documented Storage Spaces Direct context.
Understand what RAID and a CDN can—and cannot—do
RAID can change throughput and recovery trade-offs
Striping can raise aggregate disk throughput when the member drives are the limiting factor, but results depend on layout and the rest of the I/O path. RAID also changes usable capacity and failure tolerance. Plan backups separately, and account for spare capacity and rebuild or recovery time: a fast array alone does not make a continuously available service.

A CDN reduces repeated origin work for public delivery
For a geographically distributed audience, a CDN can serve cached requests and reduce repeated reads from the origin. Google Cloud’s media guidance recommends routing customer reads through a CDN for both video-on-demand and live content; caching, origin shielding, and request coalescing can reduce origin pressure. Check cacheability and freshness for your delivery setup, especially for live segments. A CDN complements a suitable origin; it does not replace one.
Plan for continuous operation, not just peak speed
Choose redundancy, spare capacity, monitoring, and replacement procedures around acceptable recovery time and data loss. Back up media, configuration, and any metadata needed to restore the service. Test recovery rather than assuming redundancy is a backup. Faster storage does not by itself provide high availability, and there is no universal self-hosted availability design for an unspecified server.
Common storage-performance problems and fixes
- Benchmarks look fast, but playback still stalls: the benchmark may be reading from RAM, or the bottleneck may be CPU or network. Compare page-cache-bypassing storage tests and check the entire data path under peak-like load.
- Throughput falls as more streams start: simultaneous reads may exceed measured sustained capacity, or the controller, bus, or network may be saturated. Test with the actual concurrency and locate which resource reaches its limit first.
- A new cache makes little difference: the active files may not repeat enough to produce cache hits, or the hot set may exceed cache size. Check hit/miss behavior before increasing cache.
- Performance drops during a rebuild: rebuild work competes for resources. Include recovery activity in capacity planning and choose a recovery process that fits your service’s tolerance for reduced performance.
- Faster drives do not improve delivery: if storage is not saturated, investigate network and CPU limits before spending on storage.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuously running YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a self-hosted delivery server, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
