For smoother Steam Link streaming on Android, connect the gaming PC to your router with Ethernet, use the phone on 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the signal is strong, and reduce competing network traffic. Then adjust Steam Link’s quality, bandwidth, and resolution while checking its performance overlay. If the network timing looks steady but the stream still runs slowly, investigate the game’s frame rate and the host PC’s encoding.
Start with the connection between your PC, router, and phone
Steam Link streams a game from a computer running Steam to a phone on the same network. Valve’s Android support page specifies Android 5.0 or newer and recommends a 5 GHz wireless router: Android Steam Link App.

Wire the host PC if possible
Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet. This avoids making the host’s Wi-Fi traffic compete with the stream sent to the phone. If both the PC and phone are wireless and you have stutters, test a wired PC connection first. Valve recommends this approach in its suggested network settings and its guidance for when both the computer and client are wireless.

Valve recommends a router supporting 802.11ac; its next-best wireless option is 802.11n on 5 GHz. A 5 GHz signal generally faces less interference from nearby networks and devices than 2.4 GHz, but it has shorter range. Prefer it when the phone gets a strong, stable signal; if the signal weakens through distance or walls, test a closer position rather than assuming 5 GHz will work better everywhere.

Reduce Wi-Fi interference and network contention
A local stream can be disrupted by the quality of the Wi-Fi path even when your internet plan is fast. Move closer to the router, keep the router in an open location, and reduce walls or other obstructions between the access point and phone. Pause large downloads, file transfers, and other high-bandwidth activity while playing.
- Try a less congested Wi-Fi channel and test channel width settings.
- Check whether the router has a firmware update.
- If the router offers Quality of Service (QoS), consider prioritizing the PC or streaming traffic. Steam also offers a network-priority setting.
These are among Valve’s recommendations for Steam Link network and connectivity problems. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps.

Use Steam’s performance overlay to identify the bottleneck
Enable the streaming performance graph in Steam Link’s advanced streaming settings, then observe it during a scene where the problem normally occurs. Valve identifies large, variable spikes in the cyan network-time line as a sign of network trouble; these spikes can coincide with stutter or freezing. Compare the graph before and after each change instead of judging a setting from a brief impression.
If network time is spiking, focus first on the Wi-Fi path, interference, and competing traffic. If it stays steady but frame rate remains low, the cause may instead be the game’s frame rate or the host computer’s encoding speed.

Lower stream demands, then raise them gradually
If the network cannot sustain the current stream reliably, trade some image quality for stability. In Steam Link, select Balanced or Fast rather than prioritizing visual quality. In advanced streaming options, lower the bandwidth limit or streaming resolution, then increase them gradually until the stutter returns; step back to the last stable setting.
There is no universal bitrate or resolution that suits every combination of router, phone, Wi-Fi conditions, and host PC. Tune for the actual connection and compare settings with the performance overlay. Valve’s network settings guidance and connectivity troubleshooting recommend reducing streaming demands when bandwidth is a constraint.

If frame rate is still low, check the host PC
A stable network graph does not guarantee a smooth stream: the game itself may be running slowly, or the host may be encoding the video too slowly. Valve’s low-framerate troubleshooting recommends trying a lower streaming resolution, such as 720p, and comparing the host’s available hardware-encoding options. Encoding results vary by graphics card, so compare options on your own system rather than assuming one is always faster.

Isolate persistent software conflicts
Some monitoring, security, capture, sync, and media applications can conflict with streaming or add network load. If the steps above do not resolve the problem, temporarily close suspected applications and test again. Change one variable at a time so you can identify whether a particular program is involved; Valve lists potential software and network issues in its network troubleshooting guidance.
