You do not automatically need 10GbE for video editing. It is most useful when you edit from a NAS, share media between workstations, or move large files over a network that is actually slowing you down. If you edit from a fast local SSD and your network is not a bottleneck, upgrading may make little difference to timeline playback.
A 10GbE connection has a nominal line rate of 10,000 Mbps—equivalent to 1,250 MB/s before protocol overhead. That conversion is not a promise of file-copy speed: the NAS, client, storage, network path, protocol, and workload all affect the result.

When does 10GbE help video editing?
The upgrade matters when media travels over the network during your work. A faster link can improve access to NAS-based footage and make large transfers less constrained by the network. It is especially relevant when several workstations share storage, though the NAS and its drives must also keep up. QNAP describes its TVS-872XT NAS as supporting video-editing workflows and simultaneous workstation access; that is the manufacturer’s use case, not an independent performance guarantee (QNAP TVS-872XT).

If your project media is on a sufficiently fast local SSD, 10GbE does not make that drive faster. It may still shorten transfers to or from shared storage, but it is unlikely to improve playback when the network is not involved in serving the media.

Editing from a NAS
If your footage lives on a NAS, the network connection is one part of the storage path. A 10GbE link is worth considering when the current connection limits access or large transfers. More than one editor or simultaneous workload can increase demand, but the benefit depends on the NAS, its storage, the clients, and the full network path.
What speeds can you expect from 10GbE?
Synology identifies 10GbE as a 10,000 Mbps interface and 1GbE as a 1,000 Mbps interface (Synology Knowledge Center, updated May 7, 2025). Since there are eight bits in a byte, 10,000 Mbps converts arithmetically to 1,250 MB/s before protocol overhead. That is a theoretical line-rate conversion, not a measured file-copy result.
There is no single generally representative sustained MB/s figure established for real-world 10GbE editing setups. Results depend on whether the NAS drives and client storage can supply data quickly enough, the negotiated link speed at both ends, switches or direct connections along the route, cabling, file-sharing protocol, and workload. Treat the link rating as capacity, not a guaranteed transfer rate.

How much network bandwidth does your footage require?
Resolution alone does not determine data demand. Codec, frame dimensions, frame rate, and the number of simultaneous streams all matter. Apple’s published ProRes examples for 1920×1080 at 29.97 fps show a range even within one codec family:
| Apple ProRes format | Target data rate at 1920×1080, 29.97 fps |
|---|---|
| ProRes 422 HQ | 220 Mbps |
| ProRes 422 | 147 Mbps |
| ProRes 422 LT | 102 Mbps |
| ProRes 422 Proxy | 45 Mbps |
These are Apple’s target data rates for the stated HD format and frame rate, not universal requirements for 4K editing or every project. Apple’s ProRes documentation gives the format context and details (Apple Support: About Apple ProRes, published March 3, 2025). Do not infer a fixed number of 4K streams from these HD examples; rates vary with codec, format, and frame rate.
Decide whether your current setup is network-limited
Before buying equipment, identify where the media is stored and which part of the path is holding up the work. Look at actual file-transfer behavior and playback in your own setup rather than assuming that a 10GbE label guarantees a particular result.

- Media location: Is the project served from a local SSD or network-attached storage?
- Workload: Are you accessing one stream, multiple streams, or shared media with other users?
- Media demand: What codec, dimensions, frame rate, and simultaneous streams are involved?
- Current bottleneck: What speed has the link negotiated, and can the NAS and client storage sustain the required data?
- Observed need: Do transfers or playback actually show signs of network limitation?
If editing from local SSD works well and network transfers are not a constraint, deferring an upgrade is reasonable. If source media is on a NAS and the negotiated connection or shared workload limits access, there is a clearer case for evaluating 10GbE.

A faster connection helps only if the relevant devices and every link between them support it. Check the workstation, NAS, connection topology, and cabling before choosing an adapter or switch.
- Workstation: If it lacks a suitable interface, it may need a compatible PCIe or Thunderbolt adapter. Verify the computer’s slot or Thunderbolt support, operating-system support, connector type, and adapter compatibility.
- NAS: Confirm that the NAS has a compatible 10GbE interface and that its storage can serve the workload. A network card cannot compensate for a slower storage system.
- Topology: Multiple computers sharing a NAS may require a suitable switch. Some two-device setups can use a direct connection, depending on device compatibility.
- Every link: Check the switch or direct path and the cabling; one slower or faulty segment can constrain the connection.
Synology’s 2021 announcement describes a specific SFP+ 10GbE network card compliant with IEEE 802.3ae, but that model-specific announcement does not establish compatibility with other devices or current availability (Synology, February 18, 2021). Confirm current compatibility with the manufacturers for the exact NAS, workstation, adapter, and switch.

Troubleshoot slow NAS transfers before upgrading
If transfers are slower than expected, verify the connection that is actually active rather than relying on the speed printed on a network card or switch. Synology’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking network equipment support, consistent MTU settings across relevant devices, cable condition, and NAS storage health (Synology Knowledge Center, DSM 7 series and legacy versions; updated May 7, 2025).
- Check the negotiated link speed at both the workstation and NAS. Synology lists 1,000 Mbps for 1GbE and 10,000 Mbps for 10GbE.
- Trace the entire path: confirm that the network equipment and each connection support the intended speed, whether the devices connect through a switch or directly.
- Check MTU consistency across relevant devices, and inspect the cable for damage or poor condition.
- Check NAS storage health and capability. A fast link cannot deliver sustained transfers faster than the storage or client can handle.
So, should you upgrade?
Consider 10GbE when you regularly edit from shared NAS storage or move large files and have evidence that the network is the limiting factor. If your editing is local-SSD-based and your network is not constraining transfers or playback, the upgrade may not change the editing experience. Match the interface and topology to your actual devices, then judge performance by the complete storage and network path—not the port’s headline rate.
