Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

If you use fixed commands, a constrained vocabulary may help. There is no single setting or recognizer that is best for every room, language, voice, and device.
Find out which part of the voice pipeline is failing
A misheard command is not always a speech-to-text problem. A voice assistant may need to detect a wake word, decide when speech starts and ends, accept the audio format, produce a transcript, and match that transcript to an action. Troubleshoot the stage that failed rather than changing several settings at once.

- It does not wake: Check wake-word detection, microphone selection, and input level.
- It wakes but gives no transcript: Check voice activity detection (VAD), audio format support, the selected speech-to-text provider, and whether the input stream completed.
- It produces the wrong words: Check microphone placement, sound conditions, processing settings, language selection, and the recognition model.
- It transcribes correctly but takes the wrong action: The issue is likely intent handling, command wording, or how the assistant maps text to actions—not recognition accuracy.
Home Assistant documents distinct failures such as a wake-word timeout, unsupported speech-to-text audio metadata, a missing provider, a failed stream, or no recognized text. Its error type can help narrow the diagnosis before you adjust anything: Home Assistant voice assistant troubleshooting.
Check the microphone and the room first
Confirm the selected input
Make sure the assistant is using the microphone you intend—not a webcam microphone, virtual audio device, or input across the room. If your operating system or assistant lets you choose an input device, verify that selection and check that its level responds when you speak.
#1 Best Overall
- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern with a pickup distance of 11.5 ft, making it easy to capture the most subtle sounds from 360° directions and transmit the sound more loud and clear. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
Improve distance and sound conditions
Move the microphone closer to the speaker, keep it unobstructed, and reduce competing sounds or echo where practical. Speak at a normal volume: a recording that clips because the input is too loud can lose speech detail. Google’s Assistant SDK audio guidance recommends placing the microphone close to the user, especially when there is background noise, and avoiding clipping. Microsoft’s Voice Access setup likewise recommends a quiet, non-echoing place and a comfortable microphone distance. These are vendor recommendations for their respective products, not controlled proof that one placement works for every offline recognizer: Google Assistant SDK audio guidance and Microsoft Voice Access setup.
If repositioning the existing microphone does not solve a poor or distant input, a suitable close-positioned microphone may be an option. Treat it as an input improvement to test, not a guarantee: the documentation supports the value of microphone quality and proximity, but does not establish a universally superior microphone type or model.
Tune noise filtering and gain for the system you use
Noise suppression and automatic gain control (AGC) can help in some setups and hurt in others. Their effects depend on the assistant, microphone, room, and speech recognizer; do not assume that enabling every filter improves recognition.

Google Assistant SDK
Google says its Assistant SDK service is designed to handle noisy audio and recommends disabling AGC and noise reduction for its input guidance, warning that preprocessing with noise reduction typically reduces recognition accuracy. That recommendation applies to the Assistant SDK; it is not a general rule for local speech-to-text models.
Home Assistant wake-word input
Home Assistant exposes noise_suppression_level, auto_gain_dbfs, and volume_multiplier for wake-word input. Its documentation gives example values for a fairly quiet microphone—suppression 2, AGC 31, and multiplier 2.0—and warns that stronger suppression or a higher multiplier can distort audio. These values are examples for Home Assistant, not universal settings to copy into another assistant: Home Assistant wake-word troubleshooting and audio settings.
Microsoft Voice Access
Voice Access offers no filtering, background-noise removal, and Voice Isolation. Microsoft says Voice Isolation works best when you are the primary speaker in moderate background noise or conversation; it may still capture overlapping or sequential speech, and it may make little difference in a quiet room. Microsoft says it runs on-device after a one-time model download and voice setup. These controls describe Voice Access, not a filter recommendation for other offline assistants: Microsoft Voice Access filtering options.

To compare settings on your device, use the same short set of representative commands each time. Change one processing setting, repeat the commands under similar conditions, and note whether the same words still fail. This makes it easier to tell whether a filter is helping your actual workload.
Verify the recognizer, language, and offline resources
Home Assistant: choose a local speech-to-text option that fits the job
Home Assistant documents local Speech-to-Phrase and Whisper options. Speech-to-Phrase is designed for supported Assist commands rather than unrestricted dictation: its coverage is a subset, and requests such as shopping lists, naming timers, and broadcasts are not usable with it out of the box. Home Assistant describes it as transcribing in under one second even on Home Assistant Green or Raspberry Pi 4; that is a stated capability for its setup, not a comparative benchmark. Whisper is also listed as a local option, but the right choice depends on the commands, language, and hardware you use. See Home Assistant’s local voice assistant guide.
Android Voice Access: download an on-device language pack
For Android 13 and newer, Google’s Voice Access instructions say to open the device’s Speech settings, choose on-device recognition, and download the language you need. Recognition is primarily on-device, but Google notes that processing can depend on configuration and system language; do not assume every configuration keeps all processing local. Follow the device-specific steps in Google’s Voice Access offline instructions.

Other local options: confirm language and device support
Vosk describes its API as offline speech recognition for Android, iOS, Raspberry Pi, and servers. That establishes it as a local option, not as a guarantee that it will recognize a particular accent, language, or command set better than another engine. Its official project information is at the Vosk API repository.
Before switching engines, verify that the exact language and offline model or language pack you need are available for your device. Then check that recognition and the assistant’s later processing—such as matching a command to an action—also stay local if offline operation is a requirement.
Use a constrained vocabulary for fixed commands
If your assistant controls a known set of devices or actions, restrict recognition to the phrases people actually use when the system supports phrase lists or a custom grammar. Microsoft documents phrase-list constraints for short, distinct phrases: supplying expected words gives the recognizer a narrower matching task. That can suit command-and-control, but it is not a general fix for open-ended conversation or dictation.

Review failed transcripts for recurring trouble spots such as room names, device names, and similar-sounding commands. Add an alias or custom phrase only if your chosen assistant supports it. Microsoft also notes that its predefined free-text dictation and web-search grammars are online and require a network connection, so those options are not suitable when recognition must remain strictly offline. See Microsoft’s speech-recognition constraints documentation.
Choose a local recognizer by workload, not by a universal ranking
There is no supported cross-device accuracy percentage or universally best offline recognizer for every accent, language, room, and command type. Compare the options against the work your assistant must do:
Quick Recap
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Command scope | Fixed household commands may suit a constrained recognizer; open-ended questions or dictation need broader language coverage. Home Assistant documents Speech-to-Phrase’s limited command coverage alongside local Whisper. |
| Language availability | Confirm that the exact language and required offline model or language pack are supported on the target device. |
| Device resources and response time | Check whether the model fits the device and whether its response time works for your use. Home Assistant’s under-one-second Speech-to-Phrase statement applies to its documented setup on Green or Raspberry Pi 4, not to other engines or workloads. |
| Audio conditions | Evaluate the microphone, typical speaking distance, room noise, and overlapping speech you actually encounter before switching models. |
| Offline behavior | Confirm that both recognition and downstream assistant processing remain local in your chosen configuration; offline recognition alone does not establish that every later step is local. |
