Critical llama.cpp RPC Vulnerability: What’s Known About CVE-2026-34159

A March 2026 llama.cpp advisory describes critical remote code execution through its RPC backend. Here’s what the report establishes, how to assess exposure and why no fixed version can yet be named from that advisory.

The strongest documented match for the headline is a critical remote-code-execution vulnerability in the RPC backend of llama.cpp, identified as CVE-2026-34159. The llama.cpp maintainers’ advisory, published March 26, 2026, describes an unauthenticated attack through the backend’s GRAPH_COMPUTE path. The headline alone does not identify an engine or incident, however, and the advisory does not establish that attackers exploited the flaw in the wild. It also does not name a fixed version.

What the llama.cpp advisory reports

The llama.cpp maintainers describe a flaw in RPC tensor deserialization. In the reported path, deserialize_tensor() skips bounds validation when a tensor’s buffer field is zero. A crafted tensor sent through GRAPH_COMPUTE can, according to the advisory, enable arbitrary reads and writes in the server process. The report says those primitives can be combined with pointer leaks and a function-pointer overwrite to execute commands as that process.

The advisory rates the issue 9.8/10 under CVSS 3.1—the score assigned by the ggml-org/llama.cpp maintainers in 2026. That is a severity rating, not a probability estimate, and it does not by itself show that exploitation has occurred. The advisory describes a proof of concept tested in Docker on Ubuntu 24.04, aarch64, against a pinned commit on February 7, 2026. That is evidence of a demonstrated attack under those test conditions, not independent confirmation of attacks against production systems.

Who may be exposed

The described attack requires the llama.cpp RPC backend to be enabled and reachable over TCP. The maintainers say the backend is enabled at build time with -DGGML_RPC=ON and defaults to listening on localhost. A service exposed to a broader network may therefore have a different risk profile from a local-only deployment. The advisory names TCP port 50052 in its impact discussion; do not treat that as a universal indicator, since operators may configure deployments differently.

Check the deployment, not just the product name

  • Establish whether your build includes the RPC backend and whether any running service uses it.
  • Check the actual listening address, port and network reachability. In particular, determine whether untrusted users or systems on a wider internal network can connect.
  • Review firewall, container and orchestration rules as well as the process configuration; a localhost default does not prove that every deployment is local-only.

The advisory relates CVE-2026-34159 to earlier llama.cpp RPC tensor issues CVE-2024-42478 and CVE-2024-42479, but says their patches covered separate command handlers and did not fix the GRAPH_COMPUTE path. The earlier CVEs should not be taken as evidence that this path is addressed.

What to do while the fixed version is unknown

The March 26 advisory does not state a patched version. Do not assume that an arbitrary update, including an update to a newer-looking build, resolves this specific issue. Consult the current llama.cpp security advisory and release information for an explicit fix before relying on version-based remediation.

The advisory’s security context cautions against using the RPC backend. If your deployment does not need it, disable or remove it and restrict any remaining service exposure while you verify the project’s current guidance. If it is required, limit network access to trusted systems and treat that as exposure reduction, not proof that the vulnerability is fixed. The available advisory does not provide a version number that can serve as a confirmed upgrade target.

Other AI inference advisories are separate issues

Security reports for other inference stacks do not patch or define the llama.cpp flaw. The following are distinct advisories, with different products and impacts:

Project and advisory Reported issue Version information stated in the advisory
llama.cpp, CVE-2026-34159; advisory published March 26, 2026 Critical RPC-backend remote code execution via GRAPH_COMPUTE, according to the maintainers. No patched version stated.
NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM; bulletin published July 14, 2026 A set of TensorRT-LLM vulnerabilities separate from the llama.cpp RPC issue. The bulletin maps affected builds through v1.3.0rc16 to v1.3.0rc17 for that set of vulnerabilities.
vLLM; advisory published July 2, 2026 Denial of service from particular /v1/completions requests involving prompt embeddings and M-RoPE models. The advisory identifies affected versions from 0.12.0 and patched versions from 0.24.0.

The version ranges in the TensorRT-LLM and vLLM advisories apply to those products and their respective reported issues only; they are not remediation guidance for llama.cpp.
