To get the most from a WH-1000XM5 charge, first make sure the headset is being detected as worn correctly, then switch off optional features you do not use. Charge and store it as Sony specifies. Sony does not publish a model-specific number of extra playback hours for any of these changes, so treat them as sensible troubleshooting—not guaranteed runtime gains.
1. Check fit and wearing detection first
Position the earcups directly over your ears and adjust the headband slider for a secure fit. Poor positioning can weaken noise canceling and interfere with wearing detection, which may stop playback or trigger automatic power-off. Hair, a cap, scarf, or other cloth between the headset and your head can also interfere with detection, according to Sony’s wearing-detection guidance.

If the headset powers off while you are wearing it correctly, check the automatic power-off setting in the current app: Sony | Sound Connect → All device settings → Power/Battery → Automatic Power Off. If wearing detection is still causing unwanted shutdowns, Sony says to select Do not turn off. This can stop false shutdowns, but it also removes the automatic power-saving action. Sony renamed Headphones Connect to Sound Connect in October 2024, so older instructions may show the former app name or menu labels. See Sony’s support article on unexpected power-off.
2. Disable optional features you do not need
Sony’s general headphone battery guidance says these features can shorten operating time when enabled:

Turn off only features you do not use. If you want to identify what matters in your own routine, change one setting at a time and observe your usage. Sony’s guidance is general headphone advice, not a controlled WH-1000XM5 test, and it gives no per-feature estimate of hours saved. The Sony battery-life guidance and Sound Connect app information describe these settings; availability can vary by model.
Do not assume that disabling noise canceling will deliver a particular battery gain. The cited Sony material does not quantify its specific effect on WH-1000XM5 runtime. Choose noise-control and sound settings based on your needs rather than an unsupported hours-saved claim.

3. Charge and store the headset correctly
The WH-1000XM5 has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Sony recommends using the supplied USB Type-C cable and warns that other cables may not charge successfully. For a USB AC adaptor, Sony specifies an output of at least 1.5 A. A compatible USB Power Delivery adaptor can shorten charging time; it does not increase playback time on a full charge.

That figure is charging time, not a playback-life improvement. Follow the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide for charging details. A replacement cable is relevant only if the supplied one is missing or damaged—not as a way to extend listening time per charge.

If the headphones have been unused for a long time, Sony says usage hours may have decreased and may improve after charging and discharging the battery several times. For long-term storage, charge the headset once every six months to help avoid over-discharge. If usage hours have dropped significantly, Sony directs owners to contact a Sony dealer about replacing the built-in battery; the guide does not describe it as a user-replaceable part. If the headset continues to shut down unexpectedly, Sony’s troubleshooting sequence is to make sure it is fully charged, reset it, and initialize it if needed. Resetting does not delete Bluetooth pairing information; initialization restores factory settings and deletes pairing information. These steps troubleshoot unintended shutdowns—they are not a guaranteed fix for a battery that has lost capacity. Follow Sony’s support instructions before proceeding with initialization.
