To help a PS5 Slim ventilate as intended, keep every vent clear, leave at least 10 cm of space around it, and avoid long-fibre carpet, cramped cabinets and fabric coverings. If dust builds up near the vents, switch the console off, unplug it and use a low-powered vacuum on the outside. These are Sony’s placement and care instructions—not a promise of a particular temperature drop.
Where to place a PS5 Slim
Choose a stable surface where air can move around the console and the vents are not blocked. Sony’s safety guidance says to keep the console at least 10 cm from a wall; PlayStation’s fan-noise troubleshooting advice calls for at least 10 cm of free space around each side. Treat this as setup guidance, not a tested cooling threshold. Sony’s ventilation and noise guidance and the PS5 safety guide describe the precautions.

- Keep all vents unobstructed.
- Avoid carpet or rugs with long fibres, and do not put the console in a narrow or cramped space.
- Do not cover the console with cloth.
- Keep dust from accumulating around the vents.
Can you put it in a cabinet?
Sony advises against cramped spaces, but the guidance does not certify a particular cabinet or specify a cabinet design as safe. If you use furniture, assess the actual space: the vents must remain clear, the console needs the recommended clearance, and the compartment must not be narrow or cramped. An open, stable surface makes it easier to meet those conditions.

Does vertical or horizontal placement change cooling?
The cited guidance does not establish that one orientation cools better than the other. For the CFI-2000 PS5 Slim model group, Sony’s setup instructions say to attach the appropriate feet before use. Follow the instructions for your own model and use its compatible feet; that setup requirement is not evidence that a stand or cooling accessory improves airflow. How to clear dust near the vents safely
Sony recommends a handheld vacuum in its safety guide, while PlayStation support specifies a low-powered vacuum for dust in and around the vents. No particular brand or gaming-specific feature is called for.
- Turn off the PS5 Slim and disconnect its AC cable before cleaning.
- Use a handheld vacuum on a low-power setting to remove dust from around the exterior vents.
- If you need to remove a cover, first turn the console off, unplug the AC cord and other cables, and wait for it to cool. Consult the manual for your exact model before handling the cover.
The safety guide cited here covers the CFI-12XXA model group, not the Slim-specific CFI-2000 group. Do not assume its cover procedure applies to your Slim. The available guidance supports removing dust around the vents; it does not instruct users to clean inside the console or dismantle it.

What to make of a loud PS5 Slim fan
PlayStation says the fan can become louder during some games and applications because it temporarily runs faster to cool the system more effectively. Fan noise by itself does not establish a hardware fault. Check for blocked vents, cramped placement and dust, then follow the PlayStation troubleshooting steps. If the concern persists or those steps do not resolve it, contact PlayStation support rather than diagnosing a fault from noise alone.

The cited Sony and PlayStation materials do not show that aftermarket cooling stands or clip-on fans improve PS5 Slim cooling, and they do not provide a measured temperature reduction for the recommended placement and cleaning steps. Prioritize Sony’s stated basics—clear vents, sufficient space and dust control—and do not treat an accessory as a substitute for them.
