Make a separate copy of important personal files and check that you can open them before you try to fix a Windows update problem. Microsoft explicitly recommends backing up personal files before following its Windows Update troubleshooting steps; you can copy files to a USB drive or use OneDrive.
What should you back up before troubleshooting Windows Update?
Start with files you would not want to lose: documents, photos, videos, and anything saved on your Desktop. Include important work files and other personal files stored outside the usual folders, such as files in a custom folder on another drive. Do not assume a Windows backup feature includes every file on the PC.

The right option depends on whether you have a suitable drive, prefer a separate offline copy or cloud access, and need earlier versions of files. Check what each method actually includes and whether it has enough space.

| Windows Backup with OneDrive | Selected standard folders | Syncs selected folders to OneDrive; check which folders are enabled and the account’s available storage. |
Copy files directly to a USB drive
- Connect an external USB drive and open File Explorer.
- Find the files and folders you want to protect, then copy and paste them to the drive. Include files outside standard folders if they matter to you.
- Open the copied files from the USB drive to confirm that representative documents, photos, or other important items are present and accessible.
This is a direct copy of the items you selected, not an automatic copy of everything on the computer. Microsoft describes copying important files to USB with File Explorer as an option in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
Use File History for versions of personal files
File History can save versions of personal files to an external drive or a network location. Follow Microsoft’s Windows backup, restore, and recovery overview to set it up, then check that the chosen destination is available and that the files you care about are included. As with any backup, verify that you can access saved files before troubleshooting.

Use Windows Backup to sync selected folders to OneDrive
- Open Windows Backup and review which folders are selected. Microsoft says it can sync Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music to OneDrive.
- Check that you are signed in to the Microsoft account you intend to use and that it has enough available OneDrive storage.
- After the backup or sync completes, check the selected files through OneDrive to confirm they are available.
A free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage, according to Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance. If Windows Backup reports an error, Microsoft says insufficient storage or a sign-in problem may be the cause. OneDrive folder backup covers the selected folders, not necessarily every file on the PC.
Does Windows Update troubleshooting delete your files?
Do not assume every repair or recovery option has the same effect. Microsoft says uninstalling an update keeps personal files, apps, and settings. Installing Windows from installation media removes everything from the device. The consequences depend on the option you choose, so keep a verified backup before proceeding.

A Windows Recovery Drive is intended for system recovery, but it does not include personal data. Microsoft states: “The Recovery Drive doesn’t include your personal files.” It cannot replace a copy of your documents, photos, and other personal files. See Microsoft’s Recovery Drive guidance for its purpose.
