How to Transfer Data to a New iPhone Without Losing Photos or Messages

Learn which iPhone transfer method fits your situation, how iCloud Photos and Messages affect backups, and what to verify before trading in your old phone.

You can move data to a new iPhone with Quick Start, an iCloud backup, a Mac or PC backup, or a wired transfer. To protect photos and messages, first check whether they sync separately through iCloud or are covered by a backup. Keep the old iPhone until you have checked your library and conversations on the new one.

Choose a transfer method

Method Best when What to know
Quick Start: direct transfer You have the old iPhone and can keep both phones together during the transfer. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are needed to begin. Keep both devices near each other and connected to power. Neither is available for normal use until the transfer finishes, and timing depends on network conditions and the amount of data. Apple’s Quick Start instructions explain the setup.
Quick Start: download from iCloud You want to start setup with the old phone and use the new phone while content downloads. Apps and data can continue downloading in the background. Keep the new iPhone on Wi-Fi and power after setup. Apple’s instructions describe this option.
Restore from iCloud backup The old phone is unavailable, or you have a recent iCloud backup. Choose the backup by date and size. Items already syncing separately, such as iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud, may download after the restore rather than coming from the backup itself. Apple’s restore guide covers the setup steps.
Restore from a Mac or PC backup You have a computer backup or prefer a local backup. Use Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on your computer. An encrypted backup requires its password; an unencrypted computer backup does not transfer Health and Activity data. Apple’s restore guide provides details.
Wired migration A direct cable connection suits your iPhone pair and setup. Apple lists wired migration as an option. Check the ports on both phones and Apple’s model-specific connection instructions before selecting or buying a cable.

Understand how iCloud protects photos and messages

iCloud syncing and iCloud Backup are separate. Apple describes iCloud Backup as a copy of information on the device that is not already synced to iCloud. iCloud Photos and Messages in iCloud sync their content separately when enabled; those items are not duplicated in the daily device backup. If either service is off, the corresponding local data may be included in the iCloud backup.

  • To check photos, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. If iCloud Photos is on, let the library finish syncing. If it is off, confirm that a current backup includes the local camera roll.
  • To check messages, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Messages. The wording may vary by iOS version. If Messages in iCloud is on, messages sync separately; if it is off, Apple says messages are included in iCloud Backup.

Other apps may sync data through iCloud or through their own services. A phone transfer or backup alone does not establish that every app’s information is present; check any critical app directly or with its provider.

Prepare both phones and your backup

  1. Keep the old iPhone available and powered. Have your Apple Account password ready. Apple recommends having a device backup and addressing SIM or eSIM activation as needed. See Apple’s checklist for preparing to transfer to a new iPhone or iPad.
  2. Check the photo and message settings. Use the paths above and allow enabled iCloud services time to sync before moving on.
  3. Check the backup date and size. If restoring from iCloud, verify that the backup is recent enough and choose the correct one by date and size during setup. If storage is insufficient, some new iPhone buyers may qualify for temporary iCloud storage; eligibility is not universal. Apple explains temporary iCloud storage.
  4. For a computer backup, consider encryption. Make an encrypted backup if Health and Activity data matter, and keep its password where you can retrieve it. Without encryption, those data do not transfer; without the password, an encrypted backup cannot be restored. See Apple’s backup and restore guidance.
  5. Protect anything already on the new phone. Some restore routes require the new iPhone to be erased and returned to setup. Erasing removes its current data, so save anything created on it before you proceed.

Transfer with Quick Start

For most people with both iPhones available, Quick Start is the straightforward choice. Apple’s instructions say to update the devices, choose a time when you do not need the old phone, and keep the devices near each other and connected to power. Transfer time varies with network conditions and the amount of data.

  5. Keep both phones close and connected to power until the direct transfer finishes. If you choose iCloud download, keep the new phone on Wi-Fi and power while content continues to arrive.

If the Quick Start prompt disappears, Apple advises restarting both devices and trying again. Quick Start cannot transfer from a current device to a new device enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business; follow the organization’s setup instructions in that case. Apple’s Quick Start guide includes these conditions.

Restore from iCloud or a computer backup

Restore from iCloud

  1. Start setup on the new iPhone and choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup when offered.
  2. Sign in to the Apple Account associated with the backup.
  3. Compare the backup dates and sizes, then select the appropriate backup.
  4. Stay connected while the restore runs. If the phone requests an iOS update before restoring, follow the displayed update prompt and retry as directed.

Photos and messages using their own iCloud sync services may continue downloading after the backup restore. Leave the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power so cloud content can return. See Apple’s iCloud restore instructions.

Restore from a Mac or PC

  1. Connect the new iPhone to the computer that holds the backup. If the phone is already set up, protect its new data and erase it first if required to return to setup.
  2. Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as appropriate for the computer, and select the iPhone.
  3. Choose the correct backup and start the restore.
  4. Enter the backup’s encryption password if prompted, then keep the devices connected until the process completes.

Apple’s computer backup restore instructions explain the available apps and password requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the new iPhone is already set up

Apple’s iCloud and computer restore steps require the new iPhone to be erased before restoring through setup. Erasing deletes the data currently on that phone, including anything added after setup, so first protect any new-phone-only photos, messages, files, or app data. Then use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings and restart setup to select the restore method. Check Apple’s current restore instructions for the route you plan to use.

Verify photos and messages before retiring the old phone

  2. Open important message conversations and check that the expected history and attachments are present.
  3. Keep the new phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while iCloud photos and other content finish downloading. Setup completion does not necessarily mean every cloud item is already stored locally.
  4. Check any essential third-party apps individually, especially those that use their own account or cloud service.

Only after the content you need is visible on the new iPhone and any critical app data is verified should you erase, trade in, or otherwise give up the old phone.
