How to Improve PS5 Remote Play Quality on Wi‑Fi

The most reliable way to improve PS5 Remote Play is to connect the console to your router with Ethernet. If the console or the Remote Play device must use Wi‑Fi, connect the device to the router’s 5 GHz network, stop competing downloads and uploads, and test the actual connection on both ends. PlayStation lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as the minimum, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for the best experience. Those figures describe measured performance, not the maximum speed printed on an internet plan.

Work through the fixes in order: update the PS5 and app, run connection tests, remove local network congestion, improve the wireless path or add Ethernet, reduce stream quality if necessary, and investigate NAT only when the app cannot find or connect to the console. This approach addresses blurry video, input delay, stuttering and disconnections without assuming that buying a faster internet package will solve a local Wi‑Fi problem.

What controls Remote Play quality

Remote Play sends your PS5’s video to another device while returning that device’s controller input to the console. The stream therefore depends on the complete path between the PS5, your router, the Remote Play client and, when you are away from home, the wider internet. A weak link anywhere can produce a soft picture, blocky compression, delayed controls or a dropped session.

Bandwidth is only one part of the path

PlayStation’s minimum is 5 Mbps of upload and 5 Mbps of download. Sony recommends 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download for best performance. The PS5 needs to send video upstream through the connection, while the client needs to receive it; the return path carries control input and connection traffic. A plan advertised at a high speed can still perform poorly if the wireless link is congested, the signal is weak or another device is using the connection.

Local Wi‑Fi conditions can matter more than the ISP plan

Wireless interference, distance and walls can reduce the useful throughput available at the client. Two devices on the same Wi‑Fi network may also compete for airtime. That is why testing the PS5 and the client at the time you play is more informative than relying on an ISP’s advertised maximum. Ethernet avoids the wireless portion of the path for the device that is wired.

Connection failures have a different cause

Picture quality problems usually point to bandwidth, congestion or the wireless path. An app that cannot discover or connect to the PS5 can instead indicate a NAT problem. PlayStation identifies NAT Type 3 as a possible blocker and names UDP port 8572 for the Remote Play connection. Treat this as a connectivity investigation, not as a reason to change router settings before basic tests are complete.

Requirements and fallback settings

Item PlayStation guidance or value How to use it
Minimum measured speed 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download Use as the minimum target on both the PS5 connection and the client connection.
Recommended measured speed 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download Use this target for more consistent quality; it is a recommendation, not a guarantee.
Preferred physical connection Wired Ethernet Wire the PS5, the client, or both when a practical cable route exists.
Preferred wireless band 5 GHz Wi‑Fi Place the client on the router’s 5 GHz SSID rather than leaving band selection to chance.
Lower video setting Standard resolution, 540p, with Standard frame rate Try this when the normal stream is unstable or looks heavily compressed.
Lowest listed fallback Low resolution, 360p, with Standard frame rate Use when 540p still cannot remain stable.
Connection port named by PlayStation UDP 8572 Consider it only while diagnosing a discovery or connection failure and only with router or ISP support if needed.

The 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official Remote Play troubleshooting guidance; the page does not state a publication year. Sony’s quality guidance lists 540p Standard and 360p Low fallbacks, and that article was last modified on January 21, 2026.

Follow this troubleshooting order

1. Update both sides and verify the account

  1. Install the latest available system software on the PS5.
  2. Update the Remote Play application on the phone, tablet, Windows PC or Mac you use as the client.
  3. Sign in with the same PlayStation account on the PS5 and in the Remote Play app.
  4. Retry the session before changing router settings. A version mismatch or account mismatch can look like a network failure and is simpler to correct.

2. Measure the connections while the problem is happening

  1. On the PS5, open Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection.
  2. Run the client device’s own internet test from the same room and network position where you normally play.
  3. Record upload and download results, not just download. Compare each direction with the 5 Mbps minimum and the 15 Mbps recommendation.
  4. Repeat the test at the time Remote Play is poor. A result from a quiet time does not show how the network behaves when other people are streaming, syncing or downloading.

The test tells you what the PS5 and client can actually obtain. It does not prove that every moment of a session will have the same capacity, so use it alongside the congestion and wireless checks below.

3. Stop competing traffic

Pause game downloads and updates on the PS5. On other devices, pause cloud backups, large file transfers, video uploads and other high-bandwidth activity. Temporarily disconnect heavy Wi‑Fi users if you need a clean test. Then restart Remote Play and compare the result.

This step is especially useful when the stream is acceptable late at night but degrades when the household is busy. It tests whether contention, rather than the nominal internet package, is consuming the capacity Remote Play needs.

4. Put the client on 5 GHz Wi‑Fi

  1. Open the client’s Wi‑Fi settings and select the router’s 5 GHz network name (SSID).
  2. Reconnect and run the client speed test again from the normal playing position.
  3. Keep the client within a strong signal area. Sony’s guidance specifically recommends 5 GHz, while the band’s coverage is more sensitive to placement and walls than a farther, lower-frequency signal.
  4. If your router combines both bands under one name and the client keeps choosing the less suitable connection, use separate SSIDs if your router provides that option, then select the 5 GHz SSID manually.

Do not assume that a device is on 5 GHz because the router supports it. Check the active Wi‑Fi connection on the client. If the 5 GHz signal is weak at the playing position, moving the router or client may help; forcing a weak signal can be worse than using a stable connection closer to the router.

5. Wire the PS5 when possible

PlayStation recommends a wired connection for the PS5, PS4, Windows PC or Mac, and describes Ethernet as the fastest and most reliable way to connect a PlayStation to a home network. A short Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical choice for connecting the PS5’s network port to a router or nearby switch.

After plugging in the cable, return to Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection and test again. If only the PS5 is wired, the client still needs a dependable path; wiring both ends removes the most wireless variability. Ethernet cannot repair an inadequate ISP connection, but it can remove interference and contention on the wired leg.

6. Reduce Remote Play quality instead of tolerating an unstable stream

  1. Open the Remote Play app’s video-quality settings before starting a session, or use the in-app settings when available.
  2. Change the resolution to Standard (540p) and keep the frame rate at Standard.
  3. Reconnect and check whether the stream remains stable during movement and menu changes, not just on a static screen.
  4. If 540p still stutters or disconnects, select Low (360p) with Standard frame rate.

Lowering resolution reduces the amount of video data the connection must sustain. It is a stability trade-off: the image will be less detailed, but a consistent 360p or 540p stream is generally more usable than a higher-quality stream that repeatedly pauses. Sony’s published settings do not establish a guaranteed percentage improvement, so treat them as practical fallbacks rather than promises.

7. Investigate NAT only for discovery or connection errors

If the app cannot find the PS5 or fails to establish a session after the basic steps, check the network information shown by the PS5 and router. NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 for the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Router menus differ, and an incorrect port change can affect other services. Do not forward ports blindly. If you understand your router’s configuration, compare its NAT and firewall information with the Remote Play requirements. Otherwise, ask the router manufacturer or ISP for help and tell them that PlayStation identifies UDP 8572. A port investigation is not necessary when Remote Play connects normally but the picture is merely blurry; address bandwidth and Wi‑Fi conditions first.

Choosing Ethernet, 5 GHz or a new router

Option Reliability Installation effort When it makes sense
Ethernet to the PS5 Highest resistance to local wireless interference Requires a cable route to the router or a network switch Choose first when the console is near enough for a practical cable.
5 GHz Wi‑Fi Better wireless choice when the signal is strong Usually immediate; select the correct SSID Use when cabling is inconvenient and the client is close enough for dependable coverage.
Dual-band Wi‑Fi 6 router Conditional; depends on placement, configuration and connected devices Requires replacing or reconfiguring network equipment Consider only after testing shows the current wireless network is the limiting factor and Ethernet is impractical.

An expensive broadband tier does not remove local Wi‑Fi interference or contention. Conversely, a new router cannot make an ISP connection that measures below the required threshold perform like a faster one. Use the tests to identify which part of the path needs attention before spending money.

Diagnose the symptom instead of guessing

The picture is blurry or pixelated

  • Run the PS5 and client tests and check both upload and download.
  • Pause downloads, uploads and cloud synchronization on other devices.
  • Move the client to 5 GHz and improve its position relative to the router.
  • Wire the PS5 if possible.
  • Use 540p Standard, then 360p Standard if the stream still cannot hold steady.

Pixelation is not proof that the PS5 is faulty. It commonly reflects the stream adapting to limited or variable network capacity.

Controls feel delayed while video remains visible

Test with competing traffic stopped and with the PS5 wired. A high advertised download rate does not rule out a poor local path. Compare the client’s behavior on 5 GHz with its previous band and avoid playing at the edge of 5 GHz coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream stutters or freezes

Repeat the connection test during the failure, then lower the resolution to 540p or 360p. If stability returns only after reducing quality, the connection is not sustaining the original setting. Keep the lower setting or continue improving the physical path rather than repeatedly reconnecting at the same quality.

Remote Play disconnects

Check for bandwidth spikes from other users, confirm that both applications are current and verify the same account is signed in. Test with the PS5 on Ethernet and the client on 5 GHz. If the app cannot reconnect or cannot locate the console, examine NAT Type 3 and seek router or ISP assistance regarding UDP 8572.

The app cannot find the PS5 at all

Confirm that the PS5 is powered or in the required rest-mode state for Remote Play, that the account matches on both devices, and that both devices have working internet access. Then inspect NAT. This symptom is different from a stream that connects but has poor image quality, so changing resolution alone will not solve it.

What a speed test can and cannot tell you

A speed test is a snapshot from one device at one moment. Run it on the PS5 and the client, because a strong result on one does not guarantee the other has the same wireless conditions. Record upload as carefully as download: Remote Play needs both directions, with 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommended in each.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test from the place where you actually play. A client beside the router may meet the recommendation while a phone or laptop behind several walls does not. Repeat with other household traffic paused, then repeat under normal household use. The difference reveals how much contention is affecting the session.

Do not interpret a higher subscription tier as a guaranteed Remote Play improvement. The evidence available from PlayStation establishes thresholds and procedures, not a dated controlled percentage for how much Ethernet, 5 GHz or a resolution change improves latency, bitrate or image quality. Those interventions are troubleshooting recommendations whose results depend on your home network.

A practical final checklist

  • PS5 system software and Remote Play app are updated.
  • The same PlayStation account is signed in on both ends.
  • PS5 path tested at Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection.
  • Client path tested from the normal playing position.
  • Measured upload and download meet at least 5 Mbps each; 15 Mbps each is the recommended target.
  • Other downloads, uploads and heavy Wi‑Fi activity are paused for the test.
  • Client is connected to the 5 GHz SSID.
  • PS5 is connected by Ethernet when a cable route is practical.
  • Remote Play is set to 540p Standard, or 360p Standard when necessary.
  • NAT Type 3 and UDP 8572 are investigated only when the app cannot discover or connect to the PS5.

Bottom line

Start with the physical network: Ethernet for the PS5 if possible, 5 GHz for a wireless client, and no competing transfers during play. Verify real upload and download performance on both devices instead of trusting the ISP plan’s headline speed. If the connection still cannot sustain the stream, use 540p or 360p Standard frame rate. Reserve NAT and UDP 8572 checks for genuine connection or discovery failures, and involve router or ISP support before making unfamiliar firewall changes.
