Sony’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps in each direction recommended for best performance—but meeting those figures alone does not guarantee smooth play. Reduce competing traffic, improve Wi-Fi or try Ethernet where supported, and investigate NAT or router restrictions only if simpler steps do not help.
Check the setup before troubleshooting lag
A configuration problem can look like a connection problem. Update the console’s system software and the Remote Play app, and sign in to the same PlayStation account on the console and client device. Sony’s setup instructions are listed in its Remote Play setup guide.

PS5 settings
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you need to wake the console remotely, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
PS4 settings
- Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Remote Play.
- Activate the console as your primary PS4, then enable the rest-mode options for staying connected to the internet and turning on the PS4 from the network.
If the app cannot find the console, Sony says to register or pair the device while the console and device are on the same network. Setup details can vary by system and app version.
Test the connection in both directions
Run the console’s internet connection test and a speed test on the device running Remote Play. Sony’s current support guidance sets a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download for best performance. These are service recommendations, not a guarantee based on a single speed-test result. See Sony’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting guidance.

Remote Play depends on the connection at both ends. A fast console-side connection does not compensate for a weak or congested client-side Wi-Fi link, and vice versa. If you are using mobile data, check the carrier connection and your data allowance: Sony notes that mobile-data availability depends on carrier and network conditions, and that Remote Play uses more data than most video-streaming services. Sony does not publish a fixed data-per-hour figure on its mobile data guidance page.
Improve Wi-Fi and reduce household congestion
When the basic tests are adequate but play still stutters or disconnects, improve the local link before changing router settings. Sony recommends using 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the device and checking whether Wi-Fi works properly on other devices. Its troubleshooting page states: “Use a 5GHz Wi-Fi to connect your device to the internet.”

- Pause downloads and other high-bandwidth activity, then test Remote Play again.
- If the wireless signal is weak, try the device closer to the router.
- For PC or Mac, test a wired Ethernet connection if one is available.
- Retest after each change so you can tell whether the local wireless link or competing traffic was the issue.
These steps target Wi-Fi quality and local congestion. Moving closer to the router will not necessarily fix a problem caused by the ISP, carrier, internet route, or NAT configuration.

Try a lower resolution when the image struggles
Sony documents a resolution setting for PS4 Remote Play that offers 360p, 540p, or 720p; Sony notes an exclusion for PS4 Pro. If the image is struggling to arrive consistently, lowering the resolution is a reasonable test. The documented options are specific to PS4 Remote Play: the support page does not establish the same control for every platform or client, nor does it quantify how much latency a lower setting may reduce.

Check NAT or router restrictions if simpler fixes fail
Sony identifies UDP port 8572 for Remote Play and says it may need to be opened on the router. It also warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. These are reasons to investigate router or network restrictions when setup, throughput, and local Wi-Fi checks have not resolved the problem—not a reason to change router settings as the first step.
Port forwarding depends on the router and network. If you are unfamiliar with those settings, Sony advises contacting your ISP, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier. Avoid disabling the firewall broadly; the support guidance does not recommend that as a fix.

Rule out app, device, or service problems
- Restart the client device and Remote Play app, and check that the app is up to date.
- If the app continues to fail, reinstall it.
- If sign-in fails, check PlayStation Network status.
- On PC or Mac, check whether antivirus software is blocking the app.
These checks can help distinguish a client or sign-in issue from a poor network connection. Sony’s troubleshooting steps are in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Know when a game or activity cannot use Remote Play
Not every session problem is a network fault. Some games are incompatible with Remote Play, including titles that require PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera. Certain simultaneous activities can also prevent Remote Play from being used. Sony lists these restrictions in its Remote Play compatibility and restrictions information.
