Google has acknowledged a bug that could send startup playback commands even when autoplay was off; its representative said the fix had reached the latest beta and was still rolling out to stable users, without naming a stable version or completion date. Menu labels and rollout timing can vary.
Turn off Android Auto’s startup music setting
- Park safely first. Do not use your phone while driving.
- On your phone, open Settings and search for Android Auto. This is often the quickest route when the phone’s menu layout differs.
- Open Android Auto’s Start-up settings and switch off Start music automatically.
- Reconnect to the car and see whether playback starts. If the setting was already off, continue to the software and app checks.

Check whether Android Auto or the music app is triggering playback
Android Auto’s autoplay setting and a music service’s own autoplay feature are separate controls. Google representative Mishaal Rahman clarified that Android Auto autoplay means starting media when the phone connects, not in-app features such as Spotify Autoplay. Turning off one setting may therefore leave another playback trigger active.

- Connection-triggered: Playback begins when Android Auto connects or starts.
- App-specific: Playback begins only in one media app, potentially because of that app’s own settings or state.
- Broader behavior: If more than one compatible media app starts unexpectedly, that observation may help distinguish a platform-level issue from an app-specific one, but it does not by itself identify the cause.
Google’s Android Auto Help explains that compatible apps can provide media such as music and podcasts through the car speakers, and recommends contacting the app developer for app-specific problems. Google’s developer guidance says media apps should not automatically start playback when Android Auto connects to their media browser service, while Android Auto may resume or start playback based on the car’s state or user actions. That guidance does not guarantee identical behavior across every vehicle.

Update Android Auto and the affected app
Google representative Mishaal Rahman said Android Auto was rolling out a fix so unsolicited play commands would not be sent when autoplay was turned off. He reported that the fix was fully rolled out to the latest beta release but was still rolling out to stable users. His posts did not specify a stable version number or a date by which all stable users would receive it.
- Check for and install available updates for Android Auto and the media app that starts playing.
- Reconnect the phone to the car and observe whether playback still begins.
- If the problem remains, continue with the relevant app’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the fix has reached every stable installation.
If Spotify is the app that starts playing
Spotify’s supported troubleshooting steps for in-car problems are to restart the app, restart the car, and reinstall Spotify if needed. Perform these checks while parked:

- Close and reopen Spotify.
- Switch the ignition off and back on to restart the car’s system.
- If the issue continues, reinstall Spotify if possible, then reconnect and test again.
Spotify advises setting up the app before driving and interacting with the device only when it is safe and permitted by law. For another media app, use that app’s own support guidance.
When to contact the car or stereo manufacturer
If updating and restarting the software does not resolve the behavior, contact the vehicle or stereo manufacturer. Spotify specifically recommends manufacturer support when its general in-car troubleshooting does not fix a persistent issue.

The phone model, vehicle, connection mode, media app, and Android Auto version can all matter. The available information does not establish a universal cause for a particular setup, so ongoing playback may require support that can account for those specific devices.

If you can do so safely while parked, note whether the symptom occurs only over Android Auto or also with a Bluetooth-only connection. Record which app starts, whether the behavior happens on every connection, and whether you use a beta or stable Android Auto release. These observations can help you describe the problem to app or vehicle support; they are clues, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
