Keep Adaptive Battery and normal app optimization enabled, use Battery Saver only when you need to reach a charger, and protect the battery from heat. Charging optimization helps preserve capacity over months, but it does not add more runtime to today’s charge.
Start with the actual source of the drain
Changing every setting at once makes it impossible to know what helped and can disable features you still need. Begin with Pixel’s usage report.

Check app and system consumption
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review the app view, then switch to the system view if your software version offers that choice.
- Look for an app with unusually high foreground or background use compared with how often you used it.
- Open that app’s battery settings and choose Optimized for most apps. Restrict background use only when the app does not need frequent updates or immediate notifications.
Menu names can vary by Pixel model and Android version. A high percentage is not automatically a fault: a navigation, video, camera or game app can legitimately use substantial power while you are actively using it. The useful warning sign is high background use when you did very little in the app.
Interpret the symptom before changing settings
Note when the battery falls. A rapid drop while the screen is on points you toward display brightness, a demanding app or a long GPS session. A large loss while the phone is idle points more toward background activity, poor cellular coverage, hotspot use, a stuck app or heat. Battery usage is easier to interpret if you compare a normal day with the period in which the problem occurred. One short interval immediately after a restart or update can be misleading.

Switch between app and system views when possible. An app may appear modest in the app list while the cellular radio, mobile network, display or another system component accounts for much of the total. That does not mean the system entry itself is defective; it can reflect the work caused by weak coverage, high brightness or the app you were using.
Run the built-in diagnostic on newer Pixels
Pixel 6 and later include a battery-drain check. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. Follow the prompts and use the result alongside the usage list rather than treating it as a replacement for that list. Google can change the exact menu labels in software updates.
Do not force-stop essential services
Force-stopping system components or apps that deliver calls, messages, security updates or notifications can create new problems without fixing the underlying drain. Investigate the app that appears in the report and change only the background behavior that is unnecessary for your use. If you need instant notifications, do not restrict that app merely because it uses some background power.

The display is often active for most of a phone session. These changes trade some convenience or visual smoothness for lower screen consumption; use the ones that fit your habits.
Brightness and timeout
- Turn on Adaptive brightness so the phone does not stay brighter than the surroundings require.
- Lower the brightness manually in dim rooms and indoors.
- Set a shorter Screen timeout so the display turns off promptly when you put the phone down.
A bright display used for long reading, video or navigation sessions can dominate the day’s consumption. Adaptive brightness is not a promise that the screen will always be dim; it adjusts to the environment. If it chooses a level you find uncomfortable, lower it manually rather than leaving the phone at maximum brightness.
Always-on Display, wallpaper and refresh rate
If you do not need glanceable information, turn off Always-on Display. Live or animated wallpapers can keep the graphics system active, so use a static wallpaper when battery life matters more than animation. On models that offer Smooth Display, disabling it can reduce refresh-rate power use, at the cost of less fluid scrolling. The option and its exact behavior depend on the Pixel model.
These are separate controls. For example, lowering brightness will not stop an always-on clock from remaining visible, and disabling Smooth Display will not shorten a timeout. Change one or two settings, then check Battery usage over a normal day. If you spend little time looking at the lock screen, turning off Always-on Display is usually a more meaningful trade than disabling a feature you use constantly.
Leave adaptive battery controls enabled
Adaptive Battery learns your pattern
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and how often you use them, then limits resources for less important background activity. Google says learning after a new-device setup or factory reset can take a few weeks. During that period, the phone may reduce some background activity, delay certain notifications or slightly affect performance. That behavior is part of the trade-off, not proof that the feature is broken.
Keep Adaptive Battery on unless you are troubleshooting a specific compatibility problem. Disabling it removes a system-wide control while leaving the actual high-drain app untouched. If the phone is new or has just been reset, give it time to learn your routine before judging the final battery behavior.

Review, rather than disable, background work
Notifications, synchronization and location updates can require background activity. If you restrict every app, you may miss timely messages or updates. Use the Battery usage report to target apps that consume power without providing a benefit you need, and leave ordinary apps on Optimized.
When an app is consistently high in background use, open its battery settings and consider a restriction only if delayed updates are acceptable. Recheck the app after using it normally; an app that looked suspicious during one unusual session may return to ordinary behavior. Do not treat a single high reading as proof that the app should be disabled permanently.
Use Adaptive connectivity where available
Adaptive connectivity can choose between available network types to balance connection quality and power use. It is available on Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, although carrier limitations may apply in the United States. If the setting is absent, your model, Android version or carrier may not support it.
Turn off hotspot or tethering as soon as connected devices no longer need it. A hotspot keeps the radio and often the processor busy even when you are not looking at the phone. Large uploads, downloads and repeated switching between weak cellular networks can also increase consumption. If battery loss is much worse in one location, compare the same usage on a reliable Wi-Fi connection; poor coverage can make the phone work harder to maintain service.
Use Battery Saver for a low-charge emergency
Battery Saver is intended to stretch the charge that remains, not to make normal daily use faster. Turn it on when you need the phone to last until you can recharge.
Turn on Battery Saver or Extreme Battery Saver
You can enable Battery Saver from the battery controls or Quick Settings; the exact path varies by Android version. Some Pixels also offer Extreme Battery Saver, which applies more aggressive limits. Read the confirmation screen because background activity, connectivity and app availability can change. Apps that are paused may not send notifications until you open them or turn the mode off.
Extreme Battery Saver is therefore a poor choice when you must receive every message or keep several apps synchronized. It is useful when the priority is an emergency call, directions to a charger or a small amount of remaining communication. Turn it off when normal background behavior matters again.
Stop the activities that consume the most power
When trying to reach a charger, avoid or shorten long sessions involving:
- Turn-by-turn navigation and continuous GPS use
- Streaming video or music over a mobile network
- Graphics-heavy games and other demanding apps
- Camera recording, especially extended video recording
- Hotspot use and large downloads or uploads
- Long calls while moving between cellular coverage areas
Let a map load before leaving, download media when you have a reliable connection, or pause an intensive task until the phone is charging. These are temporary choices for a low-charge situation, not requirements for ordinary use.

Airplane mode can help when you do not need cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but it also stops ordinary calls and may interfere with location features. Use it for a deliberate offline period, not as a blanket recommendation for everyday use. If you still need Wi-Fi, calls or location, leave the relevant connection enabled and use Battery Saver instead.

Protect battery health by controlling heat
Heat affects both immediate runtime and long-term capacity. Google states: “Your battery will drain much faster when it’s hot, even if you’re not using it.” A hot battery can also be damaged.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and hot cars.
- Avoid combining intensive gaming, navigation, video recording or hotspot use with charging when the phone is already warm.
- If the phone becomes noticeably hot, stop the demanding activity and move it to a cooler place.
- Do not leave a warm phone charging longer than necessary.
Heat can explain an apparently mysterious idle drain: a phone that remains hot continues to lose charge faster even when the screen is off. Check for a demanding app, active navigation or tethering session before assuming the battery itself has failed. Cooling the phone is more useful than repeatedly restarting it while the same heat-producing activity continues.
There is no need to regularly discharge the battery from full to empty to “teach” the phone its capacity. Google’s battery-care guidance does not require that cycling practice.
Choose the right charging optimization
Charging optimization concerns long-term battery care. It is different from Battery Saver, which changes behavior immediately to preserve the current charge.

Enable charging optimization
Open Settings > Battery > Charging optimization (the wording can vary) and choose the available mode. The 80% limit is available on Pixel 6a and later, subject to software support. Adaptive Charging may fail to learn during travel, shift work or other irregular schedules; that does not indicate a battery fault.
Use the 80% limit when your ordinary routine leaves reserve capacity. Turn it off temporarily when a full charge is more useful, such as before a long trip. This choice protects future capacity at the cost of less charge on that particular day. Adaptive Charging is the better fit when you need 100% each morning but usually charge at predictable times.
Neither option adds energy to the current charge. Charging optimization is about reducing time at a very high charge level or avoiding unnecessary completion long before you unplug. Battery Saver, by contrast, changes phone behavior immediately and can extend the charge you already have.
Account for updates, setup and software settling
After an Android software update, the phone may download, index and optimize software. Google says, “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” New-device setup and a factory reset can also make Adaptive Battery relearn your habits over a few weeks.

Give the phone several days of ordinary use while keeping it cool and checking Battery usage. If unusual drain continues beyond the initial settling period, inspect the app and system views again, run Battery diagnostics on a supported Pixel, and investigate the item that remains abnormal. Do not assume every post-update drain will resolve by itself. A persistent high background entry, unusual heat or poor signal still requires action.

- Record the symptom. Note whether the loss occurs while the screen is on, while idle, on cellular data, during charging or in a particular app.
- Check Battery usage. Compare app and system views and identify background-heavy entries.
- Correct the obvious cause. Restrict unnecessary background use, end hotspot sessions, or change a demanding app’s behavior.
- Trim display demand. Use Adaptive brightness, a shorter timeout and, if suitable, no Always-on Display, live wallpaper or Smooth Display.
- Keep adaptive controls active. Leave Adaptive Battery and normal app optimization enabled while the phone learns.
- Use Battery Saver for immediate need. Enable it only when preserving the remaining charge is the priority, and avoid intensive activities.
- Check temperature. Stop heat-producing use and move the phone away from hot conditions.
- Recheck after normal use. Look for a changed drain source instead of judging one short interval.
Make one or two changes at a time. For example, end a hotspot session and lower brightness, then compare the next ordinary day with the previous one. This simple test identifies which trade-offs help you rather than leaving you with every convenience disabled.
What not to expect from these changes
Google’s public guidance does not provide a universal percentage, number of extra minutes, or single “best” setting for every Pixel. Results vary with model, Android version, app mix, network coverage, temperature, screen use and the condition of the battery. Laboratory battery estimates, where published for a particular device, use specified settings and profiles and are not a promise for an individual owner.
A power bank can provide another charge, and a charger can make recharging convenient, but neither reduces the phone’s drain per charge. Those accessories therefore do not solve the specific goal of improving runtime without replacing the phone. The settings and behavior changes above address consumption and battery care directly.

Persistent rapid loss after the settling period warrants a focused check, not indiscriminate disabling of features. Look for an app that remains high in background use, poor cellular coverage that keeps the radio working, repeated hotspot or location sessions, and heat while idle. Compare the phone’s behavior in a cool place and with demanding apps closed, then use Pixel’s Battery diagnostics where supported.
If no app or activity explains the loss and the device becomes hot while idle, document the Battery usage screen, software version and circumstances before contacting Google support or an authorized service provider. A worn battery may eventually need service, but that is a separate decision from the settings-based steps in this guide.
