Cirrus Logic is primarily an audio and high-performance mixed-signal chip supplier, while Synaptics spans human-interface chips, wireless connectivity, processors, multimedia and edge-AI platforms. Both sell components to device makers, and their markets can overlap, but they generally solve different problems inside an OEM product. Cirrus is best understood as an audio-led specialist expanding its mixed-signal content. Synaptics is a broader interface, connectivity and edge-computing company whose current strategy emphasizes intelligent connected devices.

The short answer: specialist audio versus broad intelligent-device platforms

Cirrus Logic organizes its portfolio into two principal groups: Audio and high-performance mixed-signal (HPMS) components. Its audio products include amplifiers, audio codecs, smart codecs, converters and standalone digital signal processors. Its HPMS products include camera controllers, haptics and sensing devices, and battery and power integrated circuits. The company highlights smartphone audio, but also targets laptops, tablets, wearables, augmented- and virtual-reality headsets, home theater, automotive entertainment and professional audio.

Synaptics covers a wider functional range. Its portfolio includes touch and display controllers, biometrics, wireless connectivity, processors, video, computer vision, audio and speech processing. The company’s newer positioning centers on edge artificial intelligence, its Core IoT business and OEM platforms that combine processing, connectivity and sensing close to the end user.

A practical shorthand is therefore Cirrus Logic: audio plus mixed-signal content expansion; Synaptics: human interface plus connectivity and edge processing. That shorthand describes emphasis rather than a claim that the companies never overlap. Both can contribute audio or sensing functions to a finished device, but their product portfolios and strategic centers of gravity differ.

What Cirrus Logic actually sells

Audio components are the center of gravity

Cirrus Logic’s Audio group is built around the signal chain that turns digital information into sound, and sound into a form an electronic system can process. Its catalog includes:

  • Audio amplifiers for driving speakers and other transducers.
  • Audio codecs that convert between analog and digital audio.
  • Smart codecs that add monitoring or processing capabilities around the audio path.
  • Converters used at different points in a high-quality audio system.
  • Standalone DSPs for specialized audio processing without requiring the customer to build every function into a main application processor.

In a smartphone, these components can sit between the application processor, microphones, speakers and power system. In a laptop or tablet, they can support voice input, speaker output and audio enhancement. In professional-audio or home-theater equipment, the requirements may instead emphasize fidelity, channel handling, latency and integration with a larger audio architecture.

HPMS adds adjacent mixed-signal functions

Cirrus does not limit itself to sound. Its HPMS line includes camera controllers, haptics and sensing solutions, and battery and power ICs. These products let the company increase the amount of silicon it supplies in a device when customers need more than an audio path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Haptics and sensing can control or interpret physical interactions. Camera controllers handle specialized imaging-related functions. Battery and power devices manage energy delivery and conversion. These are mixed-signal jobs because they connect real-world electrical behavior with digital control, rather than operating solely as general-purpose computation.

Where Cirrus targets demand

Cirrus identifies smartphones as a key arena for audio leadership and HPMS content expansion. Its stated application set also includes PCs, tablets, AR/VR headsets, wearables, home theater, automotive entertainment and professional audio. The strategic aim is twofold: defend a strong position in smartphone audio while placing more HPMS components in those devices and extending into additional applications and markets.

That makes Cirrus a focused supplier for design teams that care deeply about audio quality, power behavior, physical interaction and other mixed-signal details. It is not a consumer electronics brand selling a complete phone, laptop or headset; its products are building blocks selected by manufacturers during product design.

What Synaptics actually sells

Human-interface silicon

Synaptics’ historical and current portfolio includes the functions through which people interact with connected equipment. Touch controllers interpret fingers or styluses on screens and touch surfaces. Display-related components help manage visual interfaces. Biometric technologies can support identity or authentication features.

These functions are often invisible to the buyer of a finished device, but they determine responsiveness, accuracy, power consumption and how naturally a product responds to touch or other inputs. They also place Synaptics in product categories where Cirrus is not the primary specialist.

Connectivity, processing and multimedia

Synaptics also supplies wireless connectivity, processors and multimedia technologies, including video, vision, audio and speech processing. That combination allows an OEM to source several related capabilities from one technology platform rather than treating every feature as an isolated controller.

The portfolio reaches mobile devices, PCs, smart-home products, industrial equipment, automotive systems and other connected products. Its breadth is the key contrast with Cirrus: Synaptics can participate in the user interface, the wireless link, the processor subsystem and the multimedia pipeline.

Edge AI, Astra and Core IoT

Synaptics’ current strategy emphasizes AI processing at the edge, where computation occurs near the sensors and users instead of depending entirely on a distant data center. Its Astra processors and wireless solutions support this direction, particularly in connected and embedded products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In its FY2026 Form 10-K, Synaptics describes its mission this way: “We design and deliver artificial intelligence (“AI”)-native edge solutions that bring AI closer to end users and transform how we engage with intelligent, connected devices, whether at home, at work, or on the move.” The statement is a company description, not an independent performance assessment, but it clearly shows how the company frames its newer products.

The Core IoT emphasis matters because it connects processing, connectivity and sensing into platforms for smart-home, industrial, automotive and other embedded designs. Synaptics is therefore moving beyond the idea of a single touch controller toward systems that can perceive, compute and communicate locally.

How their strategies differ

Cirrus: deepen content in known strengths

Cirrus’ strategy starts with a defensible specialty. Smartphone audio is the flagship use case, and the company seeks to preserve leadership there while increasing the number of HPMS components supplied per device. Expansion into laptops, tablets, wearables, automotive entertainment and professional audio broadens the opportunity without abandoning the audio and mixed-signal foundation.

This approach can appeal to OEMs that want sophisticated, power-conscious audio and related analog or mixed-signal functions from a supplier with deep expertise in those areas. The trade-off is a narrower functional scope than a company selling processors, wireless platforms and touch technology across an entire device architecture.

Synaptics: combine interface, connectivity and local intelligence

Synaptics is pursuing a wider platform model. Its established interface products remain important, while wireless, processors, multimedia and edge-AI capabilities extend the company into connected systems. Astra processors and Core IoT are examples of that expansion.

This strategy can appeal to OEMs designing products that must sense their surroundings, process data locally, connect wirelessly and present a responsive interface. It also exposes Synaptics to more varied application cycles and product requirements than a narrowly audio-focused supplier faces.

Why the strategies are not direct opposites

Both companies use mixed-signal technology, and both can support audio-related functions. A smart speaker, vehicle infotainment system, laptop or mobile device might contain silicon from either company, or from both, in different subsystems. The meaningful distinction is not “audio versus no audio”; it is the relative importance of audio and adjacent mixed-signal content compared with interface, connectivity and edge-processing platforms.

End-market overlap and separation

Smartphones and mobile devices

Smartphones are central to Cirrus’ audio strategy. Its components can serve speaker amplification, audio conversion, sensing, haptics and power-related needs. Synaptics’ mobile exposure is broader in function, covering human-interface and connectivity technologies as well as multimedia and processing capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The companies may therefore address the same handset design from different positions. Cirrus is most naturally evaluated on audio and mixed-signal performance; Synaptics is evaluated on whichever interface, connectivity or processing subsystem the handset maker is sourcing.

PCs, tablets and personal devices

Cirrus lists laptops and tablets among its applications, where microphones, speakers, audio enhancement and power behavior matter. Synaptics also serves PCs and mobile computing through interface, connectivity and multimedia technologies. A product team choosing between them must identify the exact subsystem rather than asking which company is universally better.

Automotive and industrial equipment

Cirrus’ named automotive focus is entertainment, making audio a natural entry point for infotainment and cabin systems. Synaptics names automotive and industrial applications in the context of connected devices, where processing, wireless communication, interfaces and sensing can all be relevant.

Smart home, wearables and immersive devices

Cirrus lists wearables and AR/VR headsets, along with home theater. Synaptics emphasizes smart-home and other connected products, with edge processing and wireless links as important parts of the proposition. These categories can involve both companies, but the chip-selection question remains subsystem-specific.

Synaptics’ FY2026 figures—and why they cannot be used as a simple scorecard

Synaptics reported $1,197.2 million in net revenue for FY2026, an 11.4% increase from FY2025. Its FY2026 application categories were:

Synaptics FY2026 application category Revenue
Enterprise and Automotive $641.1 million
Core IoT $389.7 million
Mobile $166.4 million

These are Synaptics-defined application groupings, not a product-by-product map that can be lined up directly against Cirrus’ Audio and HPMS categories. Cirrus’ product and strategy description here comes from its FY2025 annual report, while Synaptics’ financial figures come from its FY2026 filing. The fiscal periods are not aligned, and the available information does not establish a matched-period comparison of revenue, growth or product mix. It would therefore be misleading to declare one company larger or faster-growing from these figures alone.

What the comparison means for different readers

For an OEM product manager

Start with the subsystem specification. If the requirement is speaker output, audio conversion, microphone processing, haptics or power-related mixed-signal control, Cirrus’ portfolio is directly aligned. If the requirement combines touch or display input with wireless connectivity, local processing, vision or edge-AI features, Synaptics is more likely to fit the architecture.

Then examine integration. A component may be technically excellent but unsuitable if it requires a different software stack, consumes too much board area or does not meet the product’s power, thermal, security or lifecycle requirements. Company breadth is useful only when the broader portfolio maps to the design being built.

For Cirrus, the evaluation will often center on audio quality, signal integrity, amplifier behavior, power management and the value of adding HPMS functions. For Synaptics, it may center on interface responsiveness, wireless performance, processor capability, multimedia acceleration, sensing and the software required to deploy edge intelligence.

For an investor or industry analyst

The strategic question is whether each company can expand content without losing focus. Cirrus is pursuing more HPMS content and more applications around an audio-led base. Synaptics is broadening from human-interface and connectivity technologies toward edge-AI and Core IoT platforms. Their reported categories and fiscal periods must be kept separate when assessing financial performance.

Synaptics’ pending onsemi transaction

Synaptics’ FY2026 filing says the company signed a merger agreement with onsemi on June 25, 2026. Based on that filing, the transaction should be described as pending unless a newer announcement confirms completion or a changed status. A pending agreement is not the same as a completed acquisition, and its existence does not by itself change the portfolio comparison above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a consumer product to buy?

Generally, no. Cirrus audio and HPMS chips and Synaptics’ most important components are OEM parts designed into phones, PCs, vehicles, appliances and other finished products. They are not straightforward consumer replacements that can be selected by model number in the way a battery or cable might be.

One documented physical product is relevant to a narrow engineering audience: Synaptics’ Astra Machina Foundation Series modular development kits, intended for prototyping SL-Series embedded processors. The kit’s purpose is development and evaluation of edge-processing hardware, not ordinary consumer use. Availability, current model naming and retail terms can change, so engineers should confirm those details with Synaptics before planning a project.

Common mistakes when comparing Cirrus Logic and Synaptics

Treating the companies as interchangeable chip vendors

Their portfolios overlap in selected functions, but they are not equivalent catalogues. Cirrus’ center is audio and HPMS. Synaptics’ center spans interface, wireless, processors and multimedia, with edge AI and Core IoT as strategic growth areas.

Comparing unlike financial periods

Synaptics’ FY2026 numbers and Cirrus’ FY2025 product and strategy material do not form a like-for-like financial comparison. Keep the fiscal year attached to every figure and avoid a ranking that the available periods cannot support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming a company’s broadest portfolio is automatically better

A broader supplier is not automatically the right supplier. A design team may prefer a specialized audio component when audio quality, power and signal performance dominate the brief. Conversely, a connected device may benefit from a platform that combines processing, wireless and sensing.

Confusing a development kit with a finished product

The Astra Machina kit is a prototyping tool for embedded processors. It does not represent a consumer device or prove that every Synaptics component is available as a retail replacement part.

Bottom line

Choose the comparison lens that matches the device. Cirrus Logic is the more focused audio and mixed-signal specialist, with a strategy of protecting smartphone audio leadership while increasing HPMS content and entering more applications. Synaptics is the broader human-interface, connectivity and processing supplier, now emphasizing edge AI, Core IoT and OEM platforms that bring intelligence closer to connected devices. Neither description makes one company universally superior: the right fit depends on whether the design problem is primarily an audio/mixed-signal subsystem or a wider interface, connectivity and edge-computing architecture.
