Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMake a separate copy of your Hytale save before opening it on a new chapter or patchline. First determine whether the save is a local game save or belongs to a dedicated server. For dedicated servers, Hypixel Studios documents world and player data in the universe/ directory and provides a pre-update backup setting, but that setting works only when a backup directory has been configured. Local-player data uses launcher-managed directories that can differ by patchline, so do not assume the server procedure or one universal local path applies to every installation.
This precaution is especially relevant around Chapter I: Out of the Breach, announced on October 12, 2026. Treat the instructions below as version-sensitive file-handling guidance: confirm the location shown by your installed launcher or server package before copying anything.

A chapter update can change the game, launcher, server software, mods, or save format. The safest sequence is to create and verify a copy while the old version still opens the save, then launch the original only after the copy is safely stored elsewhere. If the updated version has a compatibility problem, you can preserve the pre-update state for troubleshooting instead of trying to reconstruct it from a damaged or partially migrated directory.
Do not interpret this as a claim that every Hytale client update automatically backs up every local save. The official server manual documents an automatic pre-update option for dedicated servers; it does not establish an equivalent, universal client-side backup for single-player saves.

Hytale’s Update 5 notes also show why paths must be checked rather than memorized. Release data continued under %HYTALE%/UserData/, while non-release patchlines moved into their own directories under %HYTALE%/data/. The notes state that existing non-release data was duplicated during migration, and they describe launcher support for older versions, including returning to Update 4 when mods were incompatible.
That migration history creates a practical risk: two folders can look plausible while only one is being used by the current launcher. A backup made from the wrong folder may be perfectly intact and still fail to protect the world you intended. Record the channel and version shown by the launcher or server at the time of the copy, and keep that label with the files.

Identify the save you are protecting
| Save type | What to back up | What is established officially |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated server | The server’s universe/ directory, which contains world and player save data |
The Hytale Server Manual identifies universe/ as the save location. |
| Local or single-player game | The correct launcher-managed user-data directory for the installed release or non-release patchline | Update 5 documents different data roots by patchline, but the reviewed official material does not provide a complete copy-and-restore walkthrough for local saves. |
If you sometimes host a world for other players and sometimes play locally, treat those as two separate backups. Copying a local user-data folder does not replace copying a server’s universe/, and copying server configuration files does not replace copying world data.
Also distinguish a live server installation from an archive or staging installation. Before copying, identify which process and launcher entry actually open the world. A similarly named test server or an older patchline can contain a different universe, and backing up that directory will not protect the active one.
Back up a dedicated-server universe
1. Stop activity before copying
Tell connected players to leave, then stop the Hytale server using the normal shutdown method for your installation. A live world can be changing while files are copied, leaving a backup that reflects different moments in time. Do not begin an update while the backup is still being written.
Recommended Free Tools
Wait for the process to finish and for the server window or service manager to show that it has stopped. If your host uses a scheduled restart, pause that schedule during the copy so the server cannot reopen the files halfway through.
2. Locate the server root and its universe/ folder
Open the directory that contains the server’s executable and configuration files. The documented save directory is universe/. Copy that directory as a unit rather than selecting individual world files, because it contains both world and player save data.

Do not infer the save location from a configuration-only backup. The server manual lists config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json as configuration files, while the world and player data remains in universe/. A complete operational snapshot normally needs both categories.
3. Make a manual copy to a separate destination
Use your operating system’s normal folder-copy operation to copy universe/ to a location outside the live server directory. A second internal disk, a network share, or an external hard drive for game backups can be used as an independent destination. The destination is optional; what matters is that it is separate from the directory the updater will modify.
Name the copy with the date, the Hytale patchline, and the server identity, for example universe-before-chapter1-2026-10-16. Keep the original folder untouched until the copy has completed. If several servers share a host, include each server’s name in the destination so an otherwise valid copy cannot be attached to the wrong installation.
Ensure the account performing the copy can read every file and that the destination account can retain them. If the copy reports skipped or locked files, stop and resolve that condition rather than treating the partial folder as a finished backup.
4. Verify that the copy is usable
- Confirm that the backup contains the expected
universe/folder hierarchy rather than an empty parent folder. - Compare the copy’s timestamp and approximate size with the source after the copy finishes.
- Check that the destination is actually separate; a shortcut or path pointing back to the live server is not a backup.
- Record the server version or patchline used to make the copy.
- Record which configuration files were copied alongside it if you need permissions, bans, or the whitelist restored.
These checks do not prove that a future version will accept the save, but they catch the common failure in which no complete copy was made. Keep the first verified copy unchanged and create another dated copy for later experiments instead of repeatedly replacing the same archive.
Use the server’s automatic pre-update backup
The server manual documents RunBackupBeforeUpdate as true by default. That setting runs a full server backup before an update only when a backup directory has been configured. A default value alone is therefore not evidence that a usable backup exists on your machine.
Check the prerequisite first
- Open the server configuration used by your installation.
- Confirm that
RunBackupBeforeUpdateis enabled. - Confirm that a valid backup directory is configured and writable by the account running the server.
- Make sure the destination has enough free space for a full server backup.
- Check that the destination is not the live server directory or another path routinely replaced by deployment scripts.
- Run or schedule the update only after those conditions are met.
The manual establishes the option and its directory requirement, but it does not guarantee successful completion for every server installation. After an update, inspect the configured destination and confirm that a new backup was created before relying on it. Keep a manually copied checkpoint as well when the world is important, because an automatic operation that fails, points to the wrong directory, or is later cleaned up cannot substitute for a retained copy.
Do not confuse save backups with configuration backups
The separate BackupConfigBeforeUpdate setting covers configuration files such as config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json. Those files matter for rebuilding a server’s settings and access lists, but they are not a replacement for backing up universe/. Preserve both when you need a complete pre-update snapshot.

- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption

When checking an automatic backup, verify both outcomes: that the configuration files were captured if that option is enabled, and that the full server backup contains the universe/ data. One successful configuration archive does not demonstrate that the world archive exists.
Back up a local Hytale save
Local saves require more caution because the reviewed official material does not establish a complete single-player copy-and-restore recipe. The reliable part is the launcher data-location distinction documented in Update 5: release data remained in %HYTALE%/UserData/, while non-release patchlines received separate directories beneath %HYTALE%/data/. Your installation may therefore contain more than one plausible-looking folder.
1. Identify the patchline you actually use
Check the launcher before copying. Note whether you are on the release channel or a non-release patchline, and note the version number shown there. Do not select a folder solely because its name resembles the current version; migration can leave duplicated data.
If you have used more than one channel, write down which one last opened the save successfully. That note helps you distinguish an older retained copy from the active directory when the launcher offers older-version support.
2. Close the game and launcher
Exit Hytale and close the launcher before copying user data. This prevents files from changing during the operation. If the launcher has a background process, wait until it has stopped before opening the data directory.
3. Find the current user-data location
Use the launcher or the official support instructions for your installed version to identify the active data directory. On the release path, Update 5 documents %HYTALE%/UserData/. On non-release patchlines, look under the corresponding directory in %HYTALE%/data/. Do not assume that a release path is correct for a test or preview patchline, or that every folder created during migration is still active.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Avoid broad, destructive searches that rename or merge similarly named folders. First identify the path, then copy it without changing its contents. If the launcher provides a location or version selector, use that information as the authority for the installed build.
4. Copy the relevant data to a separate location
Copy the complete relevant user-data directory, or the save-containing folder identified by the launcher, to a destination outside the Hytale installation and outside the active data root. Preserve the folder structure. Label the copy with the patchline and date so you can distinguish it from a later migrated copy.

However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Do not put the only backup inside another folder that the launcher manages or may remove during an uninstall. A separate location can be another disk, a network destination, or removable storage; no particular device is required.
5. Keep the copy before opening the new chapter
Do not launch the save on the new version until the separate copy exists. If the launcher presents a migration, upgrade, or compatibility prompt, keep the pre-update copy unchanged before accepting it.
What not to assume
- Do not apply the dedicated-server
universe/instruction to a local save unless your installation actually uses that structure. - Do not assume that every folder under
%HYTALE%/data/is the active save. - Do not overwrite an older copy with a migrated version; keep the original so you can compare or retry.
- Do not call a copied configuration file a complete local-save backup when the save data itself has not been copied.
- Do not merge release and non-release directories to create a single “master” save; the official notes describe separate patchline locations.
Manual copy or automatic server backup?
| Question | Manual copy | RunBackupBeforeUpdate |
|---|---|---|
| Does it require a configured backup directory? | No, but you must choose and access a separate destination. | Yes. The server manual says the option works only when a backup directory is configured. |
| When does it run? | When you stop the server and copy the files. | Before an update is applied, when the setting is enabled and the destination is usable. |
| Does it include world data? | Yes, if you copy the complete universe/ directory. |
The documented feature is a full server backup; verify the resulting backup rather than assuming completion. |
| Is a second retained copy guaranteed? | Only if you place one outside the live server directory and keep it. | Not by the setting alone; inspect the configured destination and retain an independent copy when the save matters. |
For a valuable server, use both: make a known-good manual copy, then verify the automatic setting before the update. The manual copy gives you a clearly labeled checkpoint; the setting provides an additional pre-update operation. Neither setting nor copy removes the need to check which patchline and server installation are active.
Checklist for the hour before a chapter update
- Identify whether the save is local or on a dedicated server.
- Write down the current release or non-release patchline.
- Stop the game or server so files are not changing.
- For a server, copy the complete
universe/directory. - For a local save, use the launcher-appropriate user-data location rather than assuming one path.
- Copy configuration files separately for a server if you need permissions, bans, whitelist, and other settings preserved.
- Store the copy outside the live installation and label it with date and version.
- Check that the copy contains data and is not merely a shortcut or empty folder.
- Confirm the server backup directory is configured if relying on
RunBackupBeforeUpdate. - Keep the original pre-update copy unchanged after making any additional test copy.
- Only then launch the save on the new chapter or patchline.
If the updated version has a problem
Preserve the evidence first
Stop making changes as soon as you see missing progress, a failed load, or unexpected migration behavior. Keep the untouched pre-update copy and make another copy of the current, problematic state before attempting repairs. This gives you two distinct states to compare.
Do not repeatedly launch and quit the only backup while testing. Work from a duplicate when possible, and keep the dated pre-update archive available in case a later attempt changes files again.

Recheck the patchline and data location
Verify that the launcher or server is reading the same release or non-release directory you backed up. Update 5’s documented migration duplicated existing non-release data, so a newer-looking folder may not be the one the current launcher uses.
Consider an older supported version when appropriate
The Update 5 notes describe launcher support for older versions, including returning to Update 4 in cases where mods were not compatible. If you use that route, use the matching pre-update backup and avoid opening the only copy in a different version first. A save that has been migrated by a newer version may not behave the same way when opened by an older one.
Restore conservatively
The official material reviewed here does not establish a universal local restore workflow. For a dedicated server, stop the server, preserve the current state, and follow the server documentation or support guidance for replacing the active universe/ with a known-good copy. For a local save, use the official support instructions for your installed launcher version rather than guessing which directory to overwrite.

Before replacing anything, retain the problematic directory under a new name or in a separate location. That preserves evidence for support and gives you a way back if the first restore attempt uses the wrong patchline. Never delete the only known-good archive until the restored save has been opened successfully under the intended version.
Common backup mistakes
- Updating first: Opening the save on the new version can trigger migration before you have a checkpoint.
- Backing up only configuration:
config.json, permissions, bans, and whitelist files do not contain the world and player save data. - Leaving the copy beside the original: An updater or cleanup operation can affect both locations if they are inside the same managed directory.
- Trusting a default without checking its destination:
RunBackupBeforeUpdate=truestill requires a configured backup directory. - Mixing patchlines: Release and non-release data can use different roots, and migration can create duplicates.
- Replacing the only backup: Keep the pre-update copy unchanged and create a new copy for each major attempt.
- Assuming a successful copy is a successful restore: A backup can be complete yet require a matching version or support-guided restore process.
- Copying while files are active: A live server or open launcher can produce an inconsistent snapshot.
- Failing to label the archive: Without the date, server identity, and patchline, it is easy to restore the wrong world.
Optional independent storage
An external hard drive is one possible destination for a second copy, especially when the server and its backups share the same computer. It is optional, not Hytale-specific, and no particular capacity, model, price, or performance is required by the documented procedure. Whatever destination you choose, keep it disconnected from routine update operations and label the copy clearly.
A second destination is useful because a failed disk, cleanup task, or mistaken overwrite can affect both the live installation and a backup stored beside it. The important property is independence from the files being updated, not a particular brand or storage technology.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are dedicated-server Hytale saves stored?
The Hytale Server Manual identifies the server’s universe/ directory as the location for world and player save data. Copy that directory as a unit while the server is stopped.
Is Hytale’s automatic pre-update backup enabled by default?
The documented RunBackupBeforeUpdate setting is shown as true by default, but it works only when a valid backup directory is configured. Check the destination and verify that a new backup was created.

It depends on the patchline. Update 5 documents release data under %HYTALE%/UserData/ and non-release data in separate directories beneath %HYTALE%/data/. Use the launcher or current support instructions to identify the active directory.
Do configuration backups include the world?
No. config.json, permissions.json, bans.json, and whitelist.json preserve server settings and access lists, not the world and player data in universe/.
Do I need an external hard drive?
No. External storage is an optional independent destination. A second internal disk or network location can also work, provided it is separate from the files the updater will modify.
What should I do if the new chapter fails to load my save?
Stop changing the files, preserve the untouched pre-update copy, and verify the active patchline and data directory. For servers, follow support guidance for replacing universe/; for local saves, use the launcher version’s official restore instructions rather than guessing which folder to overwrite.
