Update your GPU driver from its manufacturer, check that the PC meets the game’s requirements, and distinguish a brief hitch on a first visit to an area from stuttering that keeps recurring. There is no single setting proven to fix every system.
Use the in-game benchmark as your baseline
Patch 0.3.5.0 added an internal benchmark that recommends settings based on your hardware. Run it first, then change one setting at a time and compare the same scene or route. The benchmark gives you a useful starting point, but it does not establish how every live-world situation will perform.

Keep a short record of the result, including resolution, graphics preset, upscaler and whether the hitch happened during a first visit or recurred. Changing one variable at a time makes it easier to tell whether an adjustment helped.
Update your graphics driver
Install the current driver for your graphics card through its manufacturer’s official driver page. MADFINGER’s performance guide recommends keeping the GPU driver current, but older card-specific suggestions in that 2024 guide should not be treated as universal requirements. A July 2026 patch listed NVIDIA driver 610.62 as a recommendation at that time; check NVIDIA’s current release rather than assuming that number is still current. Choose an upscaler by support and image quality
MADFINGER’s May 2024 guide suggested DLSS for NVIDIA RTX 40-series cards, FSR for AMD cards and XeSS for Intel cards, and also discussed frame-generation options. Those are recommendations from that guide, not a guarantee that the same options or best choice apply to every GPU and current game version. Check which options the game currently offers on your system.
Compare available modes in the same scene, paying attention to both image quality and frame pacing. If your system supports frame generation, consider it as a separate option and assess whether the resulting motion feels better for you. The cited sources do not provide controlled head-to-head tests establishing DLSS, FSR or XeSS as universally superior. (MADFINGER performance guide)
Tell first-visit hitches apart from persistent stuttering
MADFINGER says players may see short frame lags during initial gameplay or when visiting some locations for the first time, and that these can settle. A brief hitch on first traversal is different from repeated freezes, hitches across familiar areas or crashes. If the problem keeps returning, do not dismiss it as normal first-visit behavior.

- NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors: The all-new Ampere SM brings 2X the FP32 throughput and improved power efficiency.
- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.

Hitches can have different causes. In Patch 0.3.5.0, MADFINGER described fixes involving shader pre-caching, asset streaming, resource allocation, cloud and reflection calculations, network-spawned characters and loot, particles, and other systems. That history is a reason not to assume one graphics option explains every stutter. (MADFINGER performance guide; Patch 0.3.5.0 changelog)
Check the published PC requirements
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit, an AVX2-capable CPU, DirectX 12, broadband internet and an SSD, with 40 GB of available storage. Listed memory is 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended. The minimum GPU examples include GTX 1080 8 GB, RTX 2060 SUPER 8 GB, RTX 3060 8 GB, RTX 4060 8 GB, RX 5700 8 GB, RX 6600 8 GB and Intel Arc A770 8 GB. Recommended examples include RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB, RTX 3080 10 GB, RTX 4070 12 GB, RTX 5070 12 GB, RX 6800 XT 16 GB and RX 7800 XT 16 GB. These are compatibility reference points, not an FPS guarantee. (Steam technical requirements)
If the game is on a hard drive, an SSD may be necessary to meet the listed storage requirement; it is not an established cure for shader-compilation hitches. Before buying a drive, verify your PC’s supported interface, form factor and capacity needs.

Account for improvements already made to the game
Gray Zone Warfare remains in active development. In Patch 0.3.5.0, released November 6, 2025, MADFINGER said the move to Unreal Engine 5.5 enabled more parallel work and improved performance particularly on mid- and lower-end CPUs. The studio reported reductions of about 400 MB in VRAM use and about 2 GB in RAM use; those are developer-reported update figures, not independently measured gains guaranteed on every PC.

Update 0.4, Spearhead, released March 31, 2026, reported improvements for lower-end GPUs, lower memory use, reworked scope rendering and server performance work, including reduced hitching during shooting. These are also developer claims rather than independent GPU-by-GPU benchmark results. The official news index listed an Update 0.5 teaser on October 1, 2026; a teaser alone does not establish that a new performance patch has shipped. Check the live game’s news and patch notes for changes since those releases. (Patch 0.3.5.0 notes; Update 0.4 notes; MADFINGER news)
Report recurring problems with useful details
If stuttering persists, describe what happens rather than reporting only that performance is poor. Include your GPU, CPU and RAM; resolution; graphics preset and upscaler; whether the issue is a first-time-area hitch or repeats; and whether it began after an update. MADFINGER directs players to support in patch communications. No named independent benchmark study or comparable GPU-by-GPU performance figures are established in the cited sources, so developer patch claims should not be read as independent test results.
