QSSR is Sony’s newly announced, PS5-targeted performance tier of AI upscaling, while FSR and DLSS are families of technologies whose behavior depends on the version, game, and hardware. They are not interchangeable settings, and there is no controlled comparison in the available announcements and technical documentation that establishes a universal image-quality winner. The useful question is which version a particular game supports and how it performs with that game’s settings.
What QSSR is—and what Sony has announced
On October 1, 2026, Sony described Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) as a “new performance tier of AI upscaling” derived from PSSR and Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI-graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5. The stated goal is to bring AI upscaling to that console with a performance-focused design.

Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games, saying they were being patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. It also said the technology would be made broadly available to PlayStation developers. That is not a promise that every PS5 game will support QSSR: a developer must integrate it, and support is title-specific.

Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald and Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry also praised its clarity and stability in their respective games. These are vendor and developer descriptions, not results from a matched independent test. Sony did not publish a QSSR frame-time figure, percentage performance uplift, or comparative image-quality score in its announcement.

QSSR, PSSR, and upgraded PSSR are related but distinct
PSSR is Sony’s upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement described an upgraded PSSR release for supported PS5 Pro games, with stated improvements to image stability, fine detail, and performance consistency. Sony said the update could be applied through an optional system setting and cautioned that results may vary by title; players can turn the setting off if they encounter unexpected effects.
QSSR is the faster performance tier Sony announced for PS5, not a claim that the base console now runs PS5 Pro’s PSSR unchanged. Sony connects the technologies through their development and Project Amethyst, but its announcement does not provide a controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR comparison. It therefore does not establish that QSSR matches PSSR’s image quality or performance.
How QSSR, FSR, and DLSS differ
| Technology | What the cited material establishes | Platform and support caveat |
|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Sony describes a streamlined neural network and PS5-tuned implementation; it presents QSSR as a performance tier of AI upscaling. | PS5 game option when a developer integrates it. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles; support is not automatic across the library. |
| FSR 1 | Microsoft’s Xbox GDK sample describes a spatial upscaler that works from a current anti-aliased image. | AMD documents access for Xbox developers through the Xbox Game Development Kit. The sample does not establish what every Xbox game uses. |
| FSR 2 | Microsoft’s sample describes temporal upscaling that uses multiple inputs and replaces temporal anti-aliasing in the game pipeline. It says FSR 2’s compute passes cost more than FSR 1’s, while it can provide significantly higher image quality than FSR 1 at higher upscaling ratios. | The sample is compatible with the March 2024 Update 1 GDK and includes Xbox Series X|S implementation details. Those specifics should not be generalized to every current game or later FSR release. |
| Later ML-based FSR options | AMD’s overview describes later machine-learning-based options, distinct from the older spatial and temporal methods. | Availability depends on the FSR version, product support, game integration, and in some cases whether the title has native integration or a supported FSR 3.1-or-higher implementation. |
| DLSS Super Resolution | NVIDIA describes Super Resolution as reconstructing a higher-resolution output from lower-resolution game data using RTX-powered neural rendering. NVIDIA says DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution introduced a second-generation transformer model, using game-engine pixel sampling and motion data. | Requires a supported game and compatible GeForce RTX hardware; check the specific title and feature rather than assuming every DLSS option works on every RTX GPU. |
FSR is not one fixed technique. Microsoft’s Xbox material describes FSR 1 and FSR 2, while AMD also documents later ML-based options. The March 2024 GDK sample is useful for understanding its specific implementations, not as evidence that all current FSR versions work the same way. Likewise, DLSS is a suite rather than a synonym for one upscaler.

DLSS upscaling is separate from frame generation and ray reconstruction
NVIDIA’s DLSS feature list includes Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. For a direct upscaling comparison, the relevant feature is Super Resolution. Frame Generation creates additional frames, and Ray Reconstruction is a separate ray-tracing-related feature; neither should be treated as another name for upscaling.
Hardware requirements also differ by feature. NVIDIA says Multi Frame Generation uses GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. That requirement should not be extended to every DLSS feature, nor should broad Super Resolution support be taken to mean every RTX card supports every feature in the suite.

Upscalers reconstruct an output from rendered game data, but the result depends on the input, implementation, and settings. A useful comparison records the following rather than treating the technology name as the whole test:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- Game, patch, and mode: Record the title, platform, patch, named upscaler version, and quality preset. Developers integrate and tune these systems for individual games.
- Input and output resolution: State the internal render resolution and final output or display resolution. Methods receiving different amounts of source detail are not being tested on equal terms.
- Fine detail: Inspect hair, foliage, thin geometry, signage, and distant objects for retained detail and edge reconstruction.
- Motion and stability: Look for shimmer, flicker, ghosting, trails, disocclusion artifacts, and detail that changes as the camera or objects move. Sony’s QSSR and upgraded-PSSR stability claims and NVIDIA’s description of its newer model are vendor statements, not a shared benchmark.
- Performance cost: Measure the specific game and settings. Microsoft’s FSR 2 sample says its compute passes cost more than FSR 1’s; Sony presents QSSR as a performance tier. Neither statement supplies a numeric frame-rate advantage for a particular game.
- Frame generation: Report it separately from upscaling. Comparing a mode that generates frames with a pure upscaling mode combines two different functions.
- Hardware and integration: Note whether the game supports the feature on the tested system and which GPU or console is required.
The available official descriptions do not provide matched QSSR, FSR, and DLSS tests with the same game, patch, hardware class, internal resolution, output resolution, and settings. They explain what each approach is intended to do, not which one produces the best image under equal conditions. A defensible winner would require captures and performance measurements from a controlled, title-specific test.
Which one should you care about?
- On a PS5: Look for QSSR in a game’s graphics options if the developer has added it. Sony announced it for PS5, with the first named games being patched to offer it as an option.
- On a PS5 Pro: PSSR is the relevant Sony technology; its upgraded version is available for supported games through Sony’s optional system setting. Do not assume QSSR and PSSR are equivalent modes.
- On a PC with an RTX GPU: Check whether the game offers DLSS Super Resolution and which other DLSS features your exact GPU supports. Consider frame generation and ray reconstruction separately.
- Where FSR is offered: Check the version and platform. “FSR” alone does not tell you whether a game uses the older spatial approach, temporal upscaling, or a later ML-based implementation.
As of Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement, QSSR support is an emerging, developer-integrated PS5 option. For any current game, confirm its actual patch and menu options: an announcement of developer availability is not the same as automatic support in every title.
